Miles Jennings's face fell instantly. He stared at Summer Thorne for a moment, then let out a low chuckle. "I'm not usually one to force things, but sometimes you run into someone who doesn't know any better, and there's nothing to be done. In a bit, I'll let you have a taste of what a forty-year-old man is like."
As he spoke, he began loosening his tie.
Summer Thorne sighed softly.
"If I'm not mistaken, Mr. Jennings, your previous... arrangements... have all been with socialites and wealthy madams, haven't they? It's my fault, really. I overplayed my part and made Mrs. Jennings think I was one of them."
As she spoke, she casually picked up a vase from the long table by the door. After weighing it in her hand, she swapped it for a larger one.
