Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The Golden Slums

The Sea of Clouds was a lie. Beneath the shimmering gold temples and the floating gardens lay the Foundation—a sprawling, tiered city of cold white stone where the "Discarded" lived. These were the survivors of a thousand previous "Shifts" who weren't strong enough to be Gods, but too useful to be recycled.

[LOCATION: THE LOWER REACHES — THE GOLDEN SLUMS]

[POPULATION: ANCIENT WARRIORS (RANK 3-4)]

Kane walked through the streets, his Midnight Plate hidden under a tattered grey cloak. Beside him, Vance looked like a mountain of rusted iron, and Sully's hood was pulled low over her pulsing violet eyes.

"Sarge, look at them," Vance whispered.

A group of Spartan hoplites, their bronze shields etched with Celestial runes, were hauling massive blocks of "Aether-Stone" up a vertical staircase. Their skin was translucent, their eyes vacant. They weren't slaves of chains; they were slaves of Purpose.

"They've been here so long they've forgotten they can bleed," Kane said. His voice was a low, vibrating growl that made the Aether-Stone crack.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: VOID-COMMANDER (RANK 5)]

[AURA: SOUL-AWAKENING]

Kane stopped in the center of the Great Plaza, where a Rank-5 Celestial Taskmaster—a winged being with a whip made of liquid gold—was lashing a Roman Decurion.

"Work, cattle!" the Taskmaster shrieked. "The Archon requires the Palace to be polished by the Moon-Rise!"

Kane didn't use his axes. He walked up to the Taskmaster, grabbed the golden whip mid-air, and fed on its light. The whip turned to black soot in his hand.

"Who... who are you?" the Taskmaster stammered, his wings fluttering in terror. "You are not of the Foundation!"

"I'm the one who's going to show these men how to die properly," Kane said.

He turned to the crowd of ancient warriors. His Calamity-Born aura exploded, a pillar of violet-black fire that reached the underside of the High-Palace.

"Centurions! Spartans! Samurai!" Kane's voice echoed like a war-drum through the slums. "The Gods call you 'Cattle.' I call you Alpha. You have been batteries for their paradise for too long. Do you want to die as bricks in a wall, or do you want to taste the blood of a God?"

The Spark of Rebellion

The Roman Decurion looked up, a spark of his old life returning to his grey eyes. He gripped his gladius—a weapon that had seen the fall of Carthage. "We... we cannot win. They are Rank 6. We are but Rank 4."

"Rank is a number the System gave you to keep you afraid," Kane roared, his Twin Fangs appearing in his hands, dripping with celestial rot. "I am Rank 5, and I just ate the Gate-Keeper. Who wants the first bite of the Palace?"

The Taskmaster tried to flee. Kane blurred, catching him by the throat and slamming him into the white stone. He didn't kill him instantly. He looked at the Roman.

"Kill him," Kane commanded. "Take his essence. Ascend."

The Roman hesitated, then let out a roar that had been suppressed for two thousand years. He drove his gladius through the Taskmaster's heart.

[RANK-5 ESSENCE DISTRIBUTED]

[UNITS AWAKENED: 1x CENTURION (RANK 5 EARLY)]

The effect was contagious. The "Slums" didn't just ripple; they erupted. Thousands of warriors from across Earth's history dropped their stones and reached for their rusted steel. Kane's God-Feeder Manual began to act as a wireless hub, feeding the excess mana from the "Foundation" back into the slaves.

[FACTION UPDATED: THE LEGION OF THE DAMNED]

[SQUAD SIZE: 5,000+ WARRIORS]

"Sarge, they're ready," Vance said, his iron skin glowing with a fierce, molten heat. "Give the word."

Kane looked up at the Golden Palace. The Archon's personal guards—the Seraphim (Rank 5 Peak)—were descending on wings of fire to quench the riot.

"Vance, lead the breach!" Kane commanded, his silver eyes locking onto the palace spire. "Sully, Doc, keep the Legion's hearts beating! We're not just taking the Seed. We're taking the throne."

Kane leaped onto a rising Aether-Stone, his Twin Fangs leaving trails of black lightning in the golden sky.

"SHATTER THE FOUNDATION!"
