He said it with such a flat and final tone that a sharp wave of anger flooded me.

I quickly dissipated it, turning back to look at him.

He was the one who had put her in this situation. Was he not going to face what he had done?

Lady Effer's eyes narrowed. "Is that so?"

He faced the window, his back to us as he slowly slid one hand in his pocket.

I did not know what sort of conversation had gone on between them before I had arrived, but I was only now realising the sharpness directed at him.

The prince did not answer.

"Very well. Suit yourself."

Lady Effer moved on, and Princess Dana followed, casting a long side glance towards her brother.

I lingered a moment longer.

He brushed his palm across his face, and when he dropped it, there was a disturbed look on his face through the reflection of the window.

It struck me with such utter confusion.

I didn't understand.

Had he wanted her dead or not?
