Chapter 45 - The Weight Of Blood

I didn't know how long I'd been on the floor.

My legs had stopped trembling. My breathing had slowed. But my mind was still spinning, chasing itself in circles, replaying the same moments over and over.

His hands on my face. His tongue in my mouth.

His low groan—

I pressed my palms harder against the cold stone and tried to ground myself. I tried to shove the memory back into whatever dark corner it had crawled out of.

It wasn't working.

The door opened.

My head snapped up. My body tensed, ready for him to come back, ready for another confrontation, when that head servant Ru stepped in.

Three more servants followed. Their eyes found me on the floor, and they stopped. Frozen.

I instantly got to my feet.

My legs wobbled. I locked my knees and smoothed down the front of my dress. A few pins clattered off my hair to the floor while I pretended my lips weren't tingling from what had happened earlier.

One of the servants laughed.
