Chapter 36 - Chapter 36 – Decision

They didn't move immediately.

For the first time in a while—

they stopped.

Not because they had to.

Because they chose to.

The forest opened slightly around them, a small clearing surrounded by tall, unmoving trees.

No wind.

No sound.

Just space.

Kushina stood in the middle of it, arms crossed, her gaze fixed ahead.

Thinking.

Not reacting.

Not rushing.

Thinking.

"…that's new…"

"…shut up…"

Behind her, Daichi remained still.

Watching her.

Not interrupting.

Minato leaned lightly against a tree a few steps away.

Silent.

But present.

Kushina exhaled slowly.

"…we can't keep doing this."

Daichi didn't respond immediately.

"…doing what."

"Reacting."

She turned slightly now, her eyes moving between them.

"They move—we move. They attack—we defend."

A pause.

"That's not a plan."

Minato's voice came quietly.

"…it's survival."

Kushina nodded once.

"Yeah."

A beat.

"I'm done with that."

Silence settled.

Daichi stepped forward slightly.

"That's not your decision to make yet."

Kushina's eyes snapped to him.

"Why not."

"Because you're not ready."

That again.

Her jaw tightened.

"You keep saying that."

"Because it's still true."

A pause.

Heavy.

Kushina took a step toward him.

"And what—your plan is better?"

"Yes."

No hesitation.

Of course not.

Kushina let out a short breath, almost a laugh.

"Of course it is."

Daichi didn't react.

"We stay ahead of them."

A beat.

"We avoid direct engagement."

Another.

"We gather information."

Kushina shook her head slightly.

"That's not a plan."

"It is."

"No."

Her voice sharpened.

"That's waiting."

Silence.

Minato shifted slightly against the tree.

"…waiting can be strategic."

Kushina didn't even look at him.

"I'm not interested in strategic waiting."

A faint pause.

"…figured…"

She turned fully now, pacing once across the clearing before stopping again.

"They're doing this to people."

Her voice dropped slightly.

Not loud.

But real.

"We saw what they did."

A beat.

"I'm not walking away from that."

Daichi's gaze hardened.

"You don't walk toward it either."

Kushina stopped moving.

Turned back slowly.

"And why not?"

A pause.

"Because that's exactly what they want."

Silence.

That hit.

Kushina's fingers curled slightly.

"…they want me to come to them…"

"Yes."

Minato added quietly:

"…they're testing your response."

Kushina looked between them.

"…so what. I just ignore it?"

"No."

Daichi's voice was steady.

"You survive it."

That word again.

Kushina's expression shifted.

Frustration.

Sharp.

Visible.

"I'm not just trying to survive anymore."

A beat.

"I want to stop it."

Silence.

Minato's gaze lifted slightly.

"…then you need to understand something."

Kushina frowned.

"…what."

He stepped away from the tree.

Not closer.

Just… more present.

"You're not the only variable here."

A pause.

"They are adapting to you."

Another.

"The more you act—"

"…the more they learn…"

Kushina finished quietly.

Minato nodded.

"…yes."

Silence.

That changed things.

Kushina looked down for a moment.

Thinking.

Really thinking.

"…so if I move too fast…"

"…you become predictable…"

"…and if I don't move…"

"…they control the pace…"

She exhaled slowly.

"…great."

Daichi crossed his arms.

"That's the situation."

Kushina huffed softly.

"Fantastic."

A pause.

Then—

she looked up again.

Different now.

More focused.

"…then we don't play their game."

That made both of them pause.

"…explain," Daichi said.

Kushina stepped forward slightly.

"They expect me to react."

A beat.

"They expect me to chase them."

Another.

"So we don't."

Silence.

Minato's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…then what."

Kushina smirked faintly.

"We choose where they find us."

That shifted something.

Subtle.

But real.

Daichi watched her closely now.

"…controlled engagement…"

"…exactly."

Minato spoke softly:

"…you want to bait them."

Kushina shrugged slightly.

"Not bait."

A beat.

"Control the situation."

Silence.

Daichi didn't answer immediately.

He studied her.

Long.

Measuring.

"…you're thinking ahead."

"…don't sound so surprised…"

"…I am…"

She rolled her eyes.

"…rude."

A small pause.

Then—

Daichi nodded once.

"Risky."

"Everything is."

Another pause.

"…but better than waiting."

Kushina's smirk returned slightly.

"See? You're learning."

He ignored that.

Of course he did.

Minato's gaze shifted between them.

"…if we do this…"

A pause.

"…we need to be precise."

Kushina nodded.

"Then we are."

Silence.

For a moment—

no one spoke.

But something had changed.

Not just tension.

Direction.

"…you're choosing this…"

"…yeah…"

"…dangerous…"

"…I know…"

A faint rumble inside her.

Not mocking.

Not cold.

Interested.

Daichi turned slightly.

"We move at first light."

Kushina raised an eyebrow.

"Look at that. A plan."

"…don't get used to it…"

"…too late…"

Minato allowed the faintest hint of a smile.

Just barely.

"…this will work…"

Kushina glanced at him.

"…you sure about that?"

A pause.

"…no."

A beat.

"But it's better than reacting."

Kushina smirked.

"…I like you more when you're honest."

"…I noticed…"

The clearing fell quiet again.

But this time—

it wasn't empty.

It was decided.

Far away—

hidden in shadow—

a voice spoke.

"Behavior shift detected."

A pause.

"Subject is adapting."

Another.

"Proceed with interception."

Silence.

Then—

something moved.

Faster this time.

Back in the forest—

Kushina looked ahead.

Eyes sharp.

Focused.

Ready.

"…let them come…"

"This time—we're ready."
