Chapter 40 - Chapter 40 – Quiet Between Breaths

They moved before sunrise.

No one argued about it this time.

The forest behind them still carried the weight of the fight.

Broken trees.

Cracked earth.

The remains of unstable chakra lingering in the air like smoke that refused to disappear.

Kushina didn't look back once.

Not because she didn't want to.

Because she knew if she did—

she would think about him again.

"…please…"

Her jaw tightened immediately.

"…still thinking about it…"

"…shut up…"

She adjusted the strap of the small pack over her shoulder and kept walking.

The silence between the three of them felt different now.

Not tense.

Not exactly.

Just… heavier.

Daichi walked ahead this time, his pace steady and focused.

Minato stayed behind her.

Not close enough to crowd her.

Not far enough to disappear.

Just there.

Always there.

Kushina hated how much she noticed that.

The sun was barely visible by the time they stopped again.

A narrow clearing surrounded by stone and roots.

Hidden.

Quiet.

Safe enough.

For now.

Daichi immediately began checking the perimeter again.

Of course he did.

Kushina watched him for a second before sighing softly and dropping onto the ground near one of the larger roots.

Every part of her body ached.

Her arms.

Her shoulders.

Even breathing felt heavier now.

"…you're exhausted…"

"…I noticed…"

"…slower reactions…"

"…still standing…"

A faint rumble.

Not mocking this time.

Observing.

Kushina leaned her head back against the tree behind her and closed her eyes.

Just for a second.

Just long enough to breathe.

The image returned immediately.

Empty eyes.

Shaking hands.

"…help…"

Her chest tightened again.

"…you couldn't save him…"

"…I KNOW…"

The response echoed sharper inside her than she intended.

A small sound nearby made her eyes open again.

Minato.

He had stopped a few steps away, holding a canteen in one hand.

"You forgot this."

Kushina blinked once before taking it.

"…thanks."

"You're dehydrated."

She snorted softly.

"You sound like Daichi."

"…that bad?"

"…worse."

That earned the faintest shift in his expression.

Almost a smile.

Almost.

Kushina took a long drink before handing the canteen back.

For a moment neither of them spoke.

The quiet between them felt strangely easy.

Not forced.

Not awkward.

Just… calm.

Minato sat down a short distance away, resting one arm loosely over his knee.

Kushina glanced sideways at him.

"You're unusually quiet today."

A pause.

"…thinking."

"That's never a good sign."

"…probably not."

She huffed softly.

Then the silence returned again.

But this time—

no one needed to fill it.

Kushina stared at the ground for a while before speaking again.

"…have you seen that before?"

Minato didn't ask what she meant.

"…yes."

Her fingers tightened slightly against her arm.

"…how many."

A longer pause this time.

"…enough."

She looked away immediately.

"Everyone keeps giving me that answer."

"…because numbers stop mattering after a while."

That hit harder than she expected.

Kushina frowned slightly.

"That's a terrible answer."

"I know."

Silence again.

The wind moved lightly through the trees above them.

Kushina pulled one knee closer to her chest.

"…when he looked at me…"

Her voice dropped quieter now.

"…it felt like he already knew what I'd become."

Minato looked at her then.

Really looked at her.

"You think you'll end up like him."

It wasn't a question.

Kushina didn't answer right away.

Because the worst part was—

she didn't fully know anymore.

"…I almost lost control yesterday."

"You didn't."

"That's not the point."

Her voice sharpened slightly.

"I felt it."

A beat.

"For a second it would've been easier to stop fighting it."

Silence settled heavily between them.

Minato's gaze lowered slightly before lifting again.

"…that doesn't make you weak."

Kushina laughed quietly.

"No?"

"No."

A pause.

"It makes you human."

That caught her off guard.

She looked at him for a moment, unsure how to respond.

"…you really say things like that naturally?"

A faint pause.

"…unfortunately."

She snorted despite herself.

"…that's annoying."

"…you've mentioned that."

Kushina shook her head slightly, the tension in her shoulders easing just a little.

Just enough.

Behind them, footsteps approached.

Steady.

Daichi.

"Rest while you can," he said without preamble.

Kushina rolled her eyes immediately.

"There he is."

"…you'll thank me later."

"Unlikely."

Daichi ignored that, crouching near the edge of the clearing and unfolding a rough map onto the ground.

Minato stood again and moved over without a word.

Kushina stayed where she was for another moment.

Watching them.

Daichi—focused, sharp, impossible to read half the time.

Minato—quiet, calm, always observing.

Completely different.

And somehow—

both still here.

"…you're getting attached…"

"…absolutely not…"

"…liar…"

She pushed herself back to her feet with a groan.

"…if I'm suffering, everyone else should too."

"That explains a lot," Minato replied calmly.

Kushina pointed at him immediately.

"See? That. That thing you do."

"…existing?"

"…exactly."

For the first time in what felt like forever—

something lighter slipped into the space between them.

Small.

Brief.

But real.

Daichi glanced up from the map.

"If you're done complaining."

"I'm never done complaining."

"…I know."

Kushina walked over anyway, crouching beside them.

The map spread across the ground between the three of them.

New paths.

New targets.

New decisions.

And for the first time—

they weren't just trying to survive the next attack.

They were preparing to strike back.

Far away—

deep within darkness—

a voice spoke softly.

"Subject emotional state?"

Another answered immediately.

"Unstable."

A pause.

"But strengthening."

Silence.

Then—

"Good."

And somewhere beyond the walls of that hidden place—

someone opened their eyes.
