Chapter 30 - Chapter 30 – Quiet After the Storm

The forest felt different after a fight.

Not safer.

Just… quieter.

Like everything had pulled back for a moment.

Watching.

Waiting.

Kushina sat on a fallen log at the edge of the clearing, her elbows resting on her knees.

Her breathing had finally slowed.

But her body still felt heavy.

Every muscle reminded her of the fight.

Of how close things had been.

"…you held it…"

"…barely…"

"…still counts…"

She exhaled slowly, running a hand through her hair.

"Barely seems to be my thing lately."

No answer.

Not this time.

Just that quiet presence, watching.

Across the clearing, Daichi moved without sound.

Checking the perimeter.

Always moving.

Always thinking ahead.

Kushina watched him for a moment.

"…he doesn't stop…"

"…he can't…"

"…or won't…"

She looked away again.

Her gaze drifting instead toward the trees.

Toward where the forest opened slightly.

Minato stood there.

Not close.

Not far.

Just… present.

He hadn't said much since the fight.

Hadn't tried to.

That alone made him easier to tolerate.

Kushina pushed herself up slowly, wincing just a little as her weight shifted.

Her legs held.

Good enough.

She walked toward him.

Not fast.

Not hesitant either.

Just… choosing to.

Minato noticed her before she reached him.

Of course he did.

But he didn't turn immediately.

"…you're still standing," he said quietly.

Kushina stopped beside him, crossing her arms loosely.

"Don't sound so surprised."

"I'm not."

A small pause.

"…you adapted faster than I expected."

She glanced at him sideways.

"Careful. That almost sounded like a compliment."

Another brief pause.

"…it was."

Kushina huffed softly, looking ahead again.

"Weird."

Silence settled between them.

Not awkward.

Just… there.

For a few seconds, neither of them spoke.

The wind moved lightly through the trees.

Kushina shifted her weight slightly.

"…you saw it," she said finally.

Minato's gaze stayed forward.

"Yes."

"…what."

"The moment you stopped forcing it."

That made her look at him.

Really look this time.

"…you noticed that?"

"I was watching."

Of course he was.

Kushina looked back ahead again.

"…I almost lost it."

"You didn't."

"Almost still counts."

Minato shook his head slightly.

"Not in this case."

A pause.

"…why."

His answer came without hesitation.

"Because you chose not to."

That landed differently.

Not like Daichi's words.

Not like pressure.

Just… fact.

Kushina frowned slightly.

"Feels like luck."

"It wasn't."

Silence again.

Kushina's fingers tapped lightly against her arm.

"…you always this calm?"

Another pause.

"…most of the time."

"That's annoying."

"…I've been told."

She smirked faintly.

"Yeah, I can see why."

Behind them, Daichi's footsteps approached.

Slow.

Measured.

He stopped just within range.

"You should rest."

Kushina didn't turn.

"I just sat down."

"You're still injured."

"I'm still standing."

A pause.

"You won't be if you push too far."

Kushina sighed, finally turning back toward him.

"You two rehearsed this or—"

"No," Daichi said flatly.

"…we didn't," Minato added.

That made her pause.

Then she snorted softly.

"Great. Now I've got two people telling me what to do."

"…you need it," Daichi replied.

"…you ignore it," Minato added calmly.

Kushina blinked once.

Then shook her head.

"Unbelievable."

She dropped back onto the log again, leaning back this time.

"…I was fine before all this."

Silence.

Neither of them answered immediately.

That… said enough.

Kushina's gaze drifted upward, watching the leaves move above her.

"…no you weren't…"

"…I know…"

"…still better than a cage…"

Her jaw tightened slightly.

"…yeah."

A quiet moment passed.

Then she spoke again.

"…they're not going to stop."

"No," Daichi said.

"They won't," Minato added.

Kushina looked between them.

"…good."

That got both of their attention.

She leaned forward slightly, resting her arms on her knees again.

"I'm done running."

Daichi studied her.

Long.

Carefully.

"You're not ready."

Kushina didn't argue this time.

"I didn't say I was."

A beat.

"I said I'm done running."

Silence.

Minato's gaze shifted slightly.

"…then what are you going to do?"

Kushina smirked faintly.

"…figure it out."

A low rumble inside her.

"…dangerous…"

"…yeah…"

"…I like it…"

She rolled her eyes slightly.

"…of course you do…"

Another quiet moment passed.

Not empty.

Not tense.

Just… shared.

For the first time since everything began—

this didn't feel like survival.

Not just that.

Something else.

Not quite trust.

Not quite safety.

But… close.

Kushina leaned back again, closing her eyes for just a second.

"…don't fall asleep…"

"…I'm not…"

"…you will…"

"…shut up…"

A faint breath of something almost like amusement echoed inside her.

She opened her eyes again.

Still here.

Still standing.

Still herself.

For now.

The forest remained quiet.

But not empty.

Never empty.

This time though—

they weren't just waiting for the next attack.

They were waiting for what came next.

Together.
