Chapter 8 - 8

My Sister Never Said She Was a Creepy Tale

Gu Nanqiu cautiously looked toward the partition. Inside, a person sitting on the ground was being furiously insulted with the most malicious words.

She signaled a "three" to Yue Yiyue.

Yue Yiyue estimated the situation; it should be fine.

She picked up a mop that was lying on the floor. Gu Nanqiu was still curious about what she was going to do—pretend to be a cleaner and scare them away?

Then, she saw Yue Yiyue kick the door open and slam the mop onto someone's face.

The action was swift, accurate, and ruthless.

The person inside was caught off guard. His smug smile hadn't even faded before his face was washed by the dirty, smelly mop.

"How is it you again, you stinking—" Before the insult could be finished, Yue Yiyue kicked him in the groin.

The Class Monitor had never experienced such a savage fighting style.

He instinctively covered his crotch, his face twisted in pain: "Damn, why are you two just standing there? Attack!"

The two people standing like sentinels looked at the aggressive Yue Yiyue. They exchanged glances, recalling that the Class Monitor had failed to gain the upper hand against her twice already.

Yue Yiyue stood in the shadows, glaring fiercely at the other two: "Want to try?"

But then she saw Fan Ning behind them.

The bright red blood continually stimulated Yue Yiyue's eyes. The image of her little sister being held down by wicked people, a knife slashing across her face, overlapped with the scene before her.

She instantly became like an enraged lioness.

Several heavy footsteps echoed in the empty room.

The sound of dragging, and a cry of pain.

They formed a discordant noise.

Yue Yiyue tossed the man carelessly in front of Fan Ning. She grabbed the Class Monitor's short hair roughly.

Yue Yiyue picked up a blood-stained knife from the side, patted his disgusting face with it, and commanded coldly: "Apologize."

"Otherwise, I'm not sure what I'll do." Her tone was flat, but the veins on her hand bulged, showing she was suppressing her anger. Her face was flushed slightly from the rage, and her hands trembled a bit.

Yue Yiyue was terrifyingly vicious in this state.

It was completely different from her usual self.

The Class Monitor was seeing stars from the beating. Looking at the person in front of him, who was more like a malevolent spirit than a human, he flinched.

"Yue Yiyue, calm down, calm down!" Gu Nanqiu pulled her back: "Fan Ning is fine. I'll take her to the infirmary to be treated later."

The Class Monitor also hurriedly begged for mercy: "I was wrong! I won't do it again! I'm sorry, I shouldn't have treated her like that!"

Feeling that his words lacked sincerity, he painfully slapped himself across the face twice. Afraid that Yue Yiyue was still not satisfied, he said ingratiatingly: "I'll give you the position of Class Monitor afterward, I'll give it to you! I have other ways."

Coming back from her past memories, Yue Yiyue frowned, closed her eyes, and calmed her emotions. She released her grip and stood up. She neither refused nor accepted, merely throwing out one sentence: "Don't let me catch you laying hands on anyone else next time."

The two lackeys immediately rushed to help the Class Monitor, whose legs had turned to jelly from fear. The group then ran out.

Gu Nanqiu looked at Yue Yiyue, whose eyes were red, with some concern: "Let's go to the infirmary together. You looked quite unwell just now."

Yue Yiyue rubbed her head. She opened her mouth, her voice a little hoarse and slightly tearful: "Thank you. I'm sorry, he reminded me of some bad things."

However, this was Yue Yiyue the delivery driver, not Yue Yiyue who lived a well-off life here, so she couldn't speak or explain.

She thought Gu Nanqiu would press her on why she was fighting and why she was so skilled.

But Gu Nanqiu only stroked Yue Yiyue's head, brushing off the dust that had adhered to her clothes: "This is very dangerous. Next time, I'll call a teacher to send them away. Protecting yourself is the most important thing."

"Mm." Yue Yiyue turned her head away awkwardly, not wanting Gu Nanqiu to see her crying.

She had been like this since she was little; she tended to tear up when agitated, so she usually kept a blank expression. She just hadn't been able to control it just now.

Fan Ning, standing to the side, touched her face. She hesitated for a moment before speaking: "Thank you. I'm sorry."

"Let's stop the bleeding first. This place is a bit remote. It's a good thing you were smart enough to make a noise just now." Gu Nanqiu handed a tissue to Fan Ning: "This won't happen again. You don't need to apologize. Your being treated like this is also related to me, isn't it?"

Although she was clearly here for the first time, the fact that all her "classmates" were showing goodwill toward Gu Nanqiu had already aroused some of her suspicion.

She still needed more evidence.

Fan Ning looked at the soft tissue printed with small yellow flowers. She carefully pulled one out and dabbed the cut on her face.

It hurt badly, but seeing Gu Nanqiu made the pain turn into a kind of dense itching.

She had come.

Like a divine being, she had descended by her side in her most desperate moment…

She lowered her eyes and whispered her thanks: "It's after school. Don't linger in the academic building area for too long."

"It's not good." She paused: "There's no need to go to the infirmary either. I… I'll deal with it back in the dorm."

"It's nothing," Gu Nanqiu just patted Fan Ning's shoulder: "Yiyue also needs to deal with her injury."

Yue Yiyue, whose name was mentioned, looked at her own hand. There was nothing on it.

She thought this was probably just to make Fan Ning feel more comfortable.

"Yes, I need to go too. Let's go together."

Five minutes later, they pushed open the infirmary door.

"Hmm? Who is it?" The doctor in the white coat pushed up his glasses, holding a bottle of white medicine and checking its expiry date.

"Teacher, excuse me. My friend was scratched. We'd like to treat her wound," Gu Nanqiu politely communicated with the infirmary teacher.

She led Fan Ning inside.

Yue Yiyue stood leaning against the door frame with her hands in her pockets, listening to the sounds inside.

She looked up at the sky, which was largely dyed red by the setting sun, feeling a bit sleepy.

She hadn't been able to stop herself from intervening just now.

What would happen next?

She would be retaliated against, right?

Yue Yiyue sighed. She had clearly promised the headmistress to be more restrained and not be a hothead like before.

She was twenty years old, yet in this eighteen-year-old body, she felt inexplicably restless.

But things like that were really…

Moreover, having grown up in that kind of environment, where the law of the jungle and fighting for territory were commonplace.

She hit the back of her head against the wall in annoyance, making a slight thud.

"That can't be comfortable, can it?" Gu Nanqiu, holding iodine and cotton swabs, came out and saw Yue Yiyue looking like a heartbroken puppy.

She walked over, stroked Yue Yiyue's face, and patted her head as a reward: "You were so cool just now—"

Her tone was like she was coaxing a child.

It made Yue Yiyue blush.

She wanted to avoid Gu Nanqiu's touch, but her body honestly took a step forward, drawing closer to Gu Nanqiu, allowing her to more clearly smell the subtle, faint scent of osmanthus.

She leaned her head wearily on Gu Nanqiu's shoulder: "Today was so confusing."

She was too tired.

And the messy past came back to her again.

She had only just managed to break free, and good people like the headmistress and Aunt Zhang had helped her.

She hadn't even had the chance to repay their kindness before coming here.

Could she go back?

The doubt quickly turned into certainty. She could go back.

The person on the text message had said she could go back.

"I'm fine. I don't need any medicine."

Gu Nanqiu ignored her, just dabbing the iodine and peeling off the band-aid.

The sound of Fan Ning crying out in pain came from inside the room. Yue Yiyue looked worriedly into the room. Gu Nanqiu bent down and gently applied medicine to Yue Yiyue's injury. In a place Yue Yiyue couldn't see, a small, abnormally soft, long object left some special mucus.

She cautiously glanced at Yue Yiyue, finding that the other girl hadn't noticed. Gu Nanqiu looked up at Yue Yiyue with bright eyes, her lips slightly upturned, her tone sweet: "There, all done. I'll apply it again after you've washed up~"

Grabbing Gu Nanqiu's meal card, she hurried to the store to buy four loaves of bread and three cartons of milk.

The shelf for instant noodles was empty, just as Gu Nanqiu had said.

Yue Yiyue didn't mind; she just focused on the card face that flashed with a balance of six nines. The worry that had plagued her all day was finally settled.

Just like in the original novel, Gu Nanqiu had no idea that she possessed a meal card with an unlimited balance.

So, when Yue Yiyue said she forgot her own card and needed to borrow hers, Gu Nanqiu handed it over without hesitation.

Her own meal card only had about seventy yuan left.

In the original novel, there was only one way to earn money for the meal card here: catching students and sending them to the Small Dark Room.

One hundred yuan per person.

She was struggling with the thought of whether she would starve to death here, but seeing Gu Nanqiu's balance, Yue Yiyue had a shameful idea.

If she couldn't find another way to recharge her card later, she might ask Gu Nanqiu to borrow some money.

This was the Inner World's special favor toward Gu Nanqiu.

As her teammate, taking a little bit shouldn't be a problem.

She stuffed the bread and milk into Fan Ning's hands and walked with her to the fourth floor of the dormitory. Fan Ning held the items tightly, politely said thank you, and walked into the innermost dorm room.

Watching the person disappear completely, a sudden, inexplicable sense of panic made Yue Yiyue bite into the bread in frustration.

The sickly sweet smell of the bread filled her mouth. She took a sip of milk. Eating it plain was really dry, not as good as the one-yuan steamed buns.

A rattling sound of keys came, and Gu Nanqiu pushed open the dorm room door: "Are you that hungry? Then have two loaves of bread."

"No need, I just wanted to bite something," Yue Yiyue mumbled.

It was a habit formed since childhood. She wondered if this body had it too.

"That habit of yours hasn't changed," Gu Nanqiu glanced around the clean and tidy double room.

Two small beds with thin curtains, a desk, a wardrobe, and a locked cabinet on the very top. Yue Yiyue subconsciously scanned the room but didn't find a key.

There was moss in the corner of the wall. At least she should be thankful there were no mushrooms.

Gu Nanqiu turned sideways: "Come in and take a look. I'll check the clothes in the wardrobe to see if they're wearable."

"Don't you like this bread?" Yue Yiyue asked curiously, seeing that Gu Nanqiu showed no intention of eating.

"Later, I'm not that hungry yet." Gu Nanqiu cautiously opened the wardrobe, secretly looking inside. Good, no strange things. She rummaged through it: four sets of school uniforms and two similar sets of pajamas.

"Yiyue, this white one is a bit bigger than the pink one. Can I wear this set?" Gu Nanqiu picked up the clothes and waved them toward Yue Yiyue: "Would you like the pink one? I can't open that locked cabinet, and I haven't found the key."

"I found a new toothbrush. I threw away the old ones. Pink is fine. I'm not particular about colors. Okay, we can just leave that cabinet there for now." Yue Yiyue looked at the unopened towel, felt its softness, and checked its contents, not putting the cabinet to heart.

"I'll give this place a quick clean. After all, we don't know if anyone lived here before." After a moment of thought, Yue Yiyue felt she couldn't be lazy.

The homework assigned tonight wasn't much, and it wasn't too difficult. Although she hadn't gone to university before, Yue Yiyue occasionally tutored her younger sisters, so she hadn't forgotten too much.

Gu Nanqiu followed Yue Yiyue's instructions and searched inside: "Yes, they look like they've been washed. They even smell like fabric softener."

She took out two sets of blue-checkered duvet covers: "Then we'll have to put up with it for the first night. I don't know how long we'll be staying in this place. It would be best if we could go back tomorrow."

"After all, it's almost time for the start of school."

After cleaning the entire dorm, a feeling of hunger spread from her stomach, accompanied by a strange burning sensation of stomach acid against her stomach wall.

"Eat. I don't eat much at night." Gu Nanqiu handed the items on her side to Yue Yiyue.

When there was nothing important to do, Yue Yiyue didn't like to talk much, and her eyes would stare blankly at a certain spot. Seeing the items Gu Nanqiu handed her, she pulled back her thoughts and, without formality, took the bread, tore open the bag, and ate it expressionlessly.

She was still in that dazed state, except she wasn't sending texts. Instead, she was thinking that she must not miss the dinner service time in the future.

If absolutely necessary, she would consider finding someone to help her get two portions of food.

She couldn't let Gu Nanqiu endure such hard times with her.

"What are you thinking?" Gu Nanqiu's voice was particularly prominent in the empty dorm room. It was a little ethereal, but it sounded even nicer.

Yue Yiyue tightened her grip on the bread bag. The plastic crinkled, making a rustling sound, and then, in a parabola, the bag fell into the trash can: "I was thinking that you're suffering because of me, eating this dry bread. I don't know if you're full."

"My appetite really isn't big; don't worry. Let's do our homework." Gu Nanqiu also followed Yue Yiyue's example and tossed her wrapper into the trash can.

"Let's go to bed early after we're done. It's been a long day."
