Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: Face to Face

The courtyard was eerily quiet, the puddles from earlier reflecting the gray clouds above. Sana stayed close to Arjun, her hands gripping his sleeve as he scanned the shadows with sharp, alert eyes. Every muscle in his body was tense, ready for the slightest movement.

"Who's there?" Arjun demanded, his voice firm yet low, carrying authority that made Sana feel safe despite the fear tightening in her chest.

A figure stepped forward from the shadows, cloaked in black, face obscured by a hood. The person's movements were deliberate, confident — someone who clearly had experience.

Arjun's jaw tightened. "I should've expected this," he muttered under his breath, eyes flicking to Sana. "Stay behind me."

Sana nodded, heart pounding, but she didn't move. She refused to leave his side.

The figure stopped a few feet away, hands raised slightly in a non-threatening gesture. "Arjun… you've been meddling where you shouldn't," the voice was smooth but cold. "And she…" — a sharp glance at Sana — "…she shouldn't be involved."

Arjun's eyes narrowed. "Leave her out of this? Too late. You came for me, but I'm not letting anyone hurt her."

There was a pause, tension so thick it seemed to press against Sana's chest. The figure tilted their head, studying them carefully. "You think you can protect her? You're reckless… both of you."

Arjun stepped forward, protective and unwavering, shielding Sana with his body. "Maybe we are reckless," he said, voice steady. "But we're together. That's all that matters. So go ahead — try something. You won't get her."

Sana felt a surge of pride and fear all at once. "Arjun…" she whispered, placing her hand on his chest. "I trust you."

He looked down at her, a small, rare smile touching his lips amidst the tension. "Good. Then stay close. No matter what happens, we're in this together."

The figure's expression shifted, a flicker of hesitation passing through the hooded face. But before they could act, a sudden noise from behind startled everyone — a stray group of students rushing across the courtyard. In that split second, the figure bolted toward the edge of the campus, disappearing into the shadows.

Arjun exhaled, letting his shoulders slump slightly. "This isn't over," he said quietly, brushing a stray wet strand of hair from Sana's face. His dark eyes softened as he looked at her. "But for now… you're safe."

Sana stepped closer, heart still racing. "Arjun… no matter what comes next, I want you to know… I'm with you. Always."

He cupped her face, holding her gaze with intensity that made her knees weak. "I'm with you too, Sana. Always."

And then, in the quiet aftermath, they leaned into each other, sharing a kiss that was fierce, tender, and filled with promise — a declaration that no matter the danger surrounding them, their hearts were intertwined, unbreakable.

But as they pulled back, neither noticed the faint figure in the distance, watching from the treeline — someone who had been waiting, patient and calculating, for the perfect moment to strike.

Cliffhanger: The mysterious figure watching from the shadows is more dangerous than anyone they've faced before. How will Arjun and Sana survive the next challenge, and can their love withstand the threats closing in from every side?
