Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

The first thing Alessandra Hernandez noticed was the noise.

Children laughing.

Music swelling in the distance.

The excited chatter of tourists in different languages drifts through the air like threads in a tapestry.

And above it all—towering over the crowd like something out of a dream—stood the magnificent castle of Shanghai Disneyland.

It was even bigger than she remembered.

Alessandra stopped walking and tilted her head back, staring at the shimmering towers painted in pink and gold against the clear afternoon sky. For a moment, she forgot the exhaustion from the long flight from the Philippines. She forgot the dull ache in her shoulders from carrying her backpack since morning.

A quiet smile curved on her lips.

She had been here before.

Not exactly here—Beijing, years ago.

The memory returned like an old photograph.

She was only seven years old when her family first traveled across Asia. China had been one of their earliest destinations. She could still remember the crowded markets, the smell of street food, and the constant rhythm of Mandarin conversations echoing everywhere.

Her parents believed something strongly.

Languages opened doors.

So, they made sure she learned.

Over the years, those childhood lessons slowly turned into something more. By the time she reached adulthood, Alessandra spoke Mandarin almost as comfortably as her native language.

But coming back now felt different.

Because this time—

She was alone.

Not a child being guided by her parents.

But a woman trying to prove something… mostly to herself.

"This time," she whispered softly, glancing around the lively park,

"I did it on my own."

She unfolded the park map from her bag and scanned it quickly.

Even though she could read the Mandarin characters easily, the place still felt overwhelming. The park was enormous—alive with color, music, and movement.

"All right," she muttered with a determined grin.

"Where to first?"

She folded the map again and stepped into the crowd.

Unaware that one small accident would change the direction of her life.

Across the park, Ben Wang leaned quietly against a railing overlooking the bustling pathway.

Tourists flowed past him endlessly.

Cameras clicked.

Children squealed with excitement.

Music from a nearby parade rehearsal echoed through the air.

Normally, Ben avoided crowds like this.

But today he needed a distraction.

His phone buzzed in his pocket.

He didn't even need to check the screen.

His father.

Or someone from the company.

Another reminder that expectations were waiting for him back in Shenzhen.

The Wang family empire never paused.

Not even when he desperately wanted it to.

Ben glanced briefly at the screen before sliding the phone back into his pocket without answering.

Not today.

Today he wanted silence.

Or at least something close to it.

Because once he returned to Shenzhen, the endless cycle would begin again—

Meetings.

Negotiations.

Expectations.

And the unspoken challenge that followed him everywhere:

Prove yourself.

Prove that even an illegitimate son could inherit an empire.

Ben exhaled slowly and pushed himself away from the railing.

Maybe a walk through the park would clear his thoughts.

Alessandra was studying the map again when it happened.

She took one careless step backward while looking up at the castle—

—and bumped directly into someone.

"Oh!" she gasped as she stumbled.

A firm hand caught her arm before she lost her balance.

For a brief moment, neither of them moved.

Alessandra looked up.

The man standing before her had sharp features, dark, thoughtful eyes, and an expression that seemed calm—almost unreadable.

"对不起!" she said automatically.

(Duìbùqǐ — I'm sorry!)

The words slipped out in natural Mandarin.

Ben blinked.

Not because she apologized.

But because her Mandarin was flawless.

"You speak Mandarin," he said slowly.

Alessandra laughed, slightly embarrassed.

"Yes… I had practice growing up."

"Practice?"

"My family traveled a lot around Asia when I was younger," she explained. "China was actually one of the first countries we visited."

Recognition flickered in Ben's eyes.

"So, this isn't your first time here."

"Not exactly," she admitted. "But it is my first time traveling here alone."

She paused and smiled.

"So, I guess that makes this trip special."

Ben studied her for a moment.

Most tourists he met relied on translation apps.

But this woman spoke Mandarin naturally in the middle of a crowded park.

Interesting.

He gestured toward the map in her hand.

"Lost?"

Alessandra sighed.

"Completely."

Ben glanced at the towering castle behind them.

"I suppose," he said calmly,

"I could help."

She raised an eyebrow.

"A local guide?"

"Temporary," he corrected.

She studied him carefully.

Traveling alone had taught her to be cautious with strangers.

But something about him didn't feel threatening.

If anything… he seemed distant.

As if part of him was somewhere far away from this cheerful place.

"Alright," she said finally.

"Temporary guide accepted."

Ben gestured toward the castle.

"First rule."

"And what's that?" she asked.

"If you come to Shanghai Disneyland," he said,

"You start with the castle."

Alessandra laughed.

"Fair enough."

Neither of them realized it yet.

But this small accident inside Shanghai Disneyland would become the beginning of something neither of them expected.

A journey that would take them across China—

From Shanghai…

To Shenzhen…

And eventually…

Across the sea to Camiguin Island in the Philippines.

But for now, they were simply two strangers walking side by side beneath the afternoon sun.

And sometimes—

The most important stories begin with the smallest collisions.
