Chapter 12 - The weight of silence

Chapter 12:

The air felt different that evening.

Heavier.

Like something was about to happen.

Ava sat outside the house, staring at the quiet street. 🌆

The pencil rested in her hand. 🖊️

She turned it slowly between her fingers.

How long can I keep this a secret?

Footsteps approached.

"Ava?"

She looked up.

Ethan.

He walked over and sat beside her.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

"You've been distant," he said finally.

Ava looked away.

"I've just been… busy," she replied softly.

Ethan didn't look convinced.

"Ava, I'm not blind," he said. "Things keep happening around you. Strange things."

Her heart began to race. 🖊️

"I don't know what you mean," she said quickly.

But her voice wasn't steady.

Ethan leaned forward slightly.

"Medicine appears when it's needed. Money shows up at the right time. Even that package…"

He paused.

"That's not normal."

Silence fell between them.

Ava's hands tightened around the pencil.

This is it, she thought.

I can tell him now…

Her chest felt tight.

Her mind flooded with thoughts.

He's kind.

He's patient.

He cares about me.

But then another thought came.

Stronger.

Sharper.

If you tell anyone… everything disappears.

Ava closed her eyes for a moment.

Then she shook her head.

"You're overthinking," she said quietly. "Things just… worked out."

Ethan studied her face.

Long. Careful.

Like he was trying to see past her words.

"Alright," he said finally.

But his voice had changed.

He didn't fully believe her.

After a few moments, he stood up.

"I just don't want you dealing with something alone," he said.

Ava nodded.

"I know."

He walked away slowly.

And Ava stayed where she was.

Frozen.

Tears filled her eyes, but she didn't let them fall.

"I almost told him…" she whispered.

Her voice trembled.

She looked down at the pencil. 🖊️

"This… is ruining everything," she said softly.

For the first time…

The power that once felt like hope…

Now felt like a burden.
