The group gathered in the old library, the same place where our nightmare had begun. Dust swirled in the weak light, and broken books littered the floor like forgotten memories.
"Okay," Sarah said, holding the cube, "we survived the school's counterattack. That means we need a new plan, or we'll be running blind next time."
Lara immediately twirled her chair. "Step one: plan… with style! Step two: survive stylishly! Step three: optional snacks!"
Felix groaned. "Step four: I hate everything."
Kai spread chalk diagrams across the floor. "The shadows adapted to our previous trap. Their movement is faster, more coordinated. We need a layered approach: prediction, distraction, and controlled traps. We cannot rely on the cube alone."
Mira's glow pulsed faintly. "I can dive deeper into my memories. If I connect with the faceless creature, we might predict its strategies—but it's dangerous. It can influence my thoughts, manipulate my fears."
Emily frowned. "So… it's like mental chess? And we're the pawns?"
"More like knights… and maybe some clumsy pawns," Chloe muttered, marking new symbols on the floor.
Liam nodded. "We've seen patterns. Certain rooms, certain objects… they influence the shadows. If we combine Mira's connection, the twins' knowledge, and the cube's power, we can create a larger trap than before."
Lara raised her chair dramatically. "Step four: epic chaos drills! Step five: practice dramatic entrances! Step six: comedy chaos!"
Felix groaned, clutching his broomstick. "Step seven: sanity check… optional."
Kai ignored him. "We train first. Everyone must understand their role perfectly. Timing and coordination are critical. Shadows will exploit hesitation, and the faceless creature will attack directly."
Sarah nodded. "Let's start with drills. Mira, simulate the shadows' behavior. Lara and Felix, practice distraction. Chloe, Liam, and Emily, mark traps and redirect movements. I'll synchronize with the cube."
Mira closed her eyes and let her glow expand. Shadows flickered into existence, weaving through the library in unpredictable patterns.
Lara immediately launched herself forward, shouting absurd jokes. "Why did the shadow fail the history test? Because it couldn't face the past! Ha!"
Felix swung his broomstick wildly. "I'm contributing… somehow!"
The cube pulsed as Sarah channeled energy, redirecting the shadows into the symbols the twins had placed. Mira's glow froze them briefly, and I moved alongside, learning the flow of the trap.
Hours—or maybe minutes—passed. Everyone was exhausted, but coordination improved with every run. Lara collapsed dramatically, chair on the floor. "Step eight: progress! Step nine: snacks!"
Felix groaned. "Step ten: I might actually die from over-exertion."
Mira's glow dimmed. "We've made progress. But Noorwood High will adapt faster next time. The faceless creature is aware we are strategizing. The next strike… will test us more than ever."
Kai adjusted his diagrams. "Then we prepare for every contingency. No hesitation. No mistakes. Every move must be perfect."
Sarah held the cube high. "We can do this. Together. Noorwood High isn't ready for what's coming."
I swallowed, heart racing. Somehow, amidst chaos, fear, and absurd jokes, I realized… we were getting stronger.
And the next battle would prove it.
