THE AUDIT OF ASSETS
[LOCATION: THE SPINED PEAKS – ESTATE OF BARON KAELEN]
[TIME: 01:12 HOURS]
[WEATHER: SIROCCO WINDS / 3% HUMIDITY / HIGH VISIBILITY]
The Spined Peaks were a jagged, vertical nightmare of granite and ice. Perched on the highest needle was "The Eyrie," the private fortress of Baron Kaelen—the man whose signatures occupied forty percent of the Medusa Project's funding ledger.
Caicee Clearleaf didn't use the mountain pass. The pass was monitored by Auditors—high-level bipedal constructs with True Seeing lenses. Instead, she was three hundred feet up a sheer vertical face, her Mantis Silk Gloves adhering to the frozen stone.
Beside her, Grimm was a streak of reptilian shadow, his Climb speed of 50 ft. making the ascent look like a casual stroll.
"Target Profile: Baron Kaelen," Caicee whispered, her breath a faint plume of frost. "Psychological Assessment: Narcissistic, paranoid, heavy reliance on externalized security. He doesn't trust his own guards; he trusts the Company's wards."
She paused, her mismatched eyes—red and blue—scanning the stone. To the naked eye, there was nothing. To her Intelligence (24) and Photographic Memory, the surface of the mountain was etched with glowing, geometric lines of arcane code.
[TECHNICAL SCAN: TIER 5 ENCRYPTION]
[PROTOCOL: SENSORY DEPRIVATION FOCUS]
She entered the Wait-State.
In the Cradle, they had kept her in total darkness for months to sharpen her "Steady Eye." Now, she closed her eyes and "read" the mountain through the psionic ping of the Sternum Needle.
"There," she muttered. "A frequency gap in the Alarms. Every 3.4 seconds, the weave pulses to check for avian lifeforms. If I synchronize my movement to the pulse, I am a bird. I am data noise."
[INFILTRATION: THE UPPER BALCONY]
She crested the ridge and manifested Augmented Compression.
The transition was violent, a sudden shearing of her physical mass. She shrank from her 3'2" baseline down to a mere Diminutive thirteen inches. Her AC spiked to 34. Her Stealth became a mathematical certainty: Hide +31.
She slipped through the iron-filigree of the Baron's bedchamber window like a draft of cold air.
The Baron was awake. He sat at a desk of dark ironwood, staring at a holographic transmission from the Cradle. The projection showed the Violet Ghost Lotus she had left in Oakhaven.
"I told you she was a mistake!" the Baron hissed at the projection. "She's not just a rogue asset. She's a virus. She's deleting our infrastructure!"
"The Auditors are deployed, Kaelen," the projection replied—the same synthesized drone of the Minister she had defied. "She is one gnome. You have a legion of constructs."
"One gnome who has my account numbers!" Kaelen screamed.
"Correction," Caicee's voice came from the shadows behind his chair. "I had your account numbers. Now, I have your life."
[COMBAT PROTOCOL: KINETIC DELETION]
The Baron spun, reaching for a heavy, gold-plated pistol—a Western gnomish invention loaded with "Mage-Slayer" rounds.
Caicee didn't give him the chance to aim.
[SWIFT ACTION: NEURAL SYNC (FUSION)]
[STANDARD ACTION: BLOODSTORM BLADE – BLADE WIND]
She merged with Grimm in a flash of violet light. In her Tiny Hybrid form, she was a blur of scales and shadow, moving with Permanent Haste.
She didn't draw the Singularity Katana. She launched it.
Using Thunderless Throw, she hurled the blade. It split into two in mid-air—the Mirror enchantment creating a twin arc of death. The first blade severed the Baron's pistol-hand at the wrist. The second blade circled the room, decapitating the two invisible Auditor-constructs that had been standing guard in the corners.
[DAMAGE CALCULATION: THEURGIC STRIKE]
* Iaijutsu Focus: 1d20 + 20 \rightarrow 38 (+6d6).
* Shadow Blade Dex to Damage: +7.
* Decisive Strike Multiplier: x2 damage on a successful hit.
The katanas returned to her hands with a wet thwack.
The Baron collapsed, clutching his stump, his face a mask of aristocratic terror. "You... you can't... the Company... they'll never stop..."
"I know," Caicee said, walking across his desk. Her hybrid claws clicked against the ironwood. "That's the beauty of the system. They programmed me to never stop, either."
She leaned in, her thermal-sensing pits tracking the frantic throb of his carotid artery.
"I've already initiated the transfer," she whispered. "Five million from your private holdings in the Dragon Empires. Moved to a series of blind trusts in the Western Free Cities. I'm using your own money to fund my revenge, Baron. It's a very efficient loop."
"Please..."
"Protocol: Defragmentation," she quoted.
She didn't use the sword for the kill. She used the Arrow of Bone. Her hybrid tail-stinger whipped forward, burying itself in the Baron's chest.
[FORTITUDE SAVE DC 15: FAILED]
[STATUS: TARGET DELETED]
[POST-MISSION LOG]
Caicee stood on the balcony, her form returning to its baseline Whisper Gnome state. She felt the familiar drain on her PP pool—18/27 remaining.
She looked out over the Spined Peaks. The wind caught her white hair, whipping it across her face.
She reached into the Mantis Silk Gloves and pulled out a small, glass-encased gem. The Baron's "Master Key." With this, she could access the Company's sub-network for the entire Western sector. She could see the Null-Stalkers before they even left their hangars. She could hunt the hunters.
She dropped the calling card.
The Violet Ghost Lotus bloomed on the Baron's desk, its petals rotating slowly over the corpse of one of the Company's wealthiest men. It was the third flower she had planted. Three more, and the garden would be complete.
"Grimm," she said, her voice sounding almost human for the first time in years. "Find the next name on the list. I think it's time we audited the Minister himself."
The Death Monitor hissed in approval, and together, they vanished into the vertical shadows of the mountain.
