Chapter 4 - A Child Among Ashes

The desert was silent again.

Hours had passed since the explosion.

Where the Helix Advanced Research Facility once stood, there was now nothing but smoke, fire, and broken metal buried under tons of sand and concrete. The sky above was dark with thick clouds, as if the world itself refused to look at what had happened.

Military vehicles surrounded the ruins.

Soldiers moved carefully through the wreckage, their boots crunching over shattered glass and burned wires. Some carried scanners, others held weapons ready, even though no one knew what they were expecting to find.

"Sector 3 clear!"

"Nothing in the west side!"

"Watch the ground, it's unstable!"

Near the center of the ruins, a tall officer stood with his arms crossed, staring at the destroyed facility.

Commander Rylan Cole had seen war before.

He had seen cities burn, machines fail.

But he had never seen something like this.

"This place was supposed to be the safest lab in the world," one of the soldiers said quietly.

Rylan didn't answer.

His eyes stayed on the massive crater where the main building had collapsed.

"Keep searching," he said."We need survivors. Scientists, staff… anyone."

"Yes, sir."

The soldiers spread out again.

Most of them didn't expect to find anyone alive.

The explosion had been too big.

The heat too strong.

Nothing could survive that, nothing human, at least.

One of the younger soldiers walked toward a broken metal door half buried in sand.

His scanner beeped weakly.

He frowned and looked at the screen.

"Sir… I'm getting a signal."

Rylan turned.

"What kind of signal?"

"Life sign… but it's very low."

Rylan walked over quickly.

"Where?"

The soldier pointed at the ground.

"Under this section."

The metal door led to a staircase going down, but it was blocked by fallen concrete.

Rylan looked at the ruins for a moment, thinking.

Then he spoke firmly.

"Clear it."

The soldiers hesitated.

"Sir, the structure could collapse again."

"I said clear it."

They moved immediately.

Metal cutters sparked as they sliced through broken bars. Others pushed the heavy pieces of concrete aside little by little.

Dust filled the air.

The deeper they cleared, the colder the air became.

One of the soldiers wiped sweat from his face.

"This part wasn't on the map."

Rylan frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"The facility blueprint doesn't show a level this deep."

Rylan felt something strange in his chest.

"Keep going."

After several minutes, the last piece of metal fell away, revealing a narrow stairway leading into darkness.

The light from above barely reached the bottom.

The air coming from below felt… different.

It felt cold, till like the place had been sealed for years.

Rylan grabbed a flashlight.

"I'm going down."

Two soldiers followed him.

Their footsteps echoed as they slowly walked down the stairs. The deeper they went, the quieter everything became.

No alarms, fire, sound just silence.

At the bottom, they reached a small hallway.

The walls were cracked, but not burned like the rest of the facility.

One of the soldiers whispered,

"This place survived the explosion…"

Rylan nodded slowly.

"There must have been a hidden sector."

They moved forward carefully.

At the end of the hallway was a metal door, half open.

A weak light flickered inside.

Rylan raised his weapon and pushed the door open.

The room was small.

Broken glass covered the floor.

Old machines stood against the walls, most of them shut down.

In the center of the room was a shattered glass pod, lying on its side.

Something inside moved.

One of the soldiers gasped.

"Sir…!"

Rylan stepped closer.

Inside the broken pod, curled up on the floor, was a little boy.

He couldn't be more than five years old.

His clothes were torn, his face covered in dust, and his small hands were shaking as he held his knees close to his chest.

His eyes were open.

Wide, bright too bright.

He looked at them without fear.

Without crying, just watching.

Rylan slowly lowered his weapon.

"How…?" he whispered.

The soldier checked his scanner again.

"Life sign confirmed… he's alive."

Rylan knelt down carefully.

"Hey… can you hear me?"

The boy didn't answer.

He just kept staring at him.

His eyes moved slightly, like he was looking through him, not at him.

Rylan felt a strange pressure in his head, like the air had become heavier.

He ignored it.

"What's your name?" he asked softly.

The boy blinked once.

His lips moved.

But no sound came out.

The lights in the room flickered suddenly.

All three men froze.

The machines around the walls turned on for a second, then off again.

The soldier looked around nervously.

"Did you see that?"

Rylan nodded slowly.

"Yes…"

He looked back at the boy.

His eyes were still locked on him.

For a moment, the air shimmered around him, like heat rising from the ground.

Then everything went normal again.

The boy whispered something.

Very quiet.

Rylan leaned closer.

"What did you say?"

His voice was weak.

"…Echo…"

Rylan frowned.

"Echo? Is that your name?"

The boy didn't answer.

His eyes slowly closed.

His body went limp.

The scanner beeped louder.

"His heart rate is unstable!" the soldier said.

Rylan stood up quickly.

"Get medical team down here now!"

The soldier ran to the radio.

Rylan looked back at the broken pod.

There was a faded label on the metal frame.

He wiped the dust away with his hand.

The words appeared slowly.

SUBJECT ECHOCLASSIFIED

Rylan felt a chill run down his spine.

Above them, the ruined lab burned under the dark sky.

And somewhere far away…

In the shadows of a broken city…

Ray opened his eyes.

And smiled.
