The celebration was in full swing.
Guests continued to arrive, gradually filling the beachfront with lively conversation and warm laughter. The afternoon sun cast a warm glow across the resort as a gentle sea breeze carried the scent of salt and sunscreen through the air. From the small stage, a live band played smooth, easygoing tunes that drifted over the shoreline, blending with the steady hush of the waves. Around the venue, bartenders crafted colorful cocktails while chefs tended the open grills, sending the rich aroma of charred seafood and barbecue through the gathering. Some guests lingered at the bar, others chatted around the dining tables, and a few had already wandered toward the shoreline, shoes abandoned in the sand as they enjoyed the water.
Not far away, conversations flowed just as freely as the cocktails.
Some guests discussed upcoming business ventures.
Others reminisced about old memories, their laughter carrying easily on the ocean breeze.
Denisse stood quietly near the edge of the gathering, a glass of fruit punch resting in her hand as her gaze wandered across the party.
Almost instinctively, it found Lesley.
As the hostess, Lesley had scarcely remained in one place all afternoon. She moved effortlessly from one group of guests to another, greeting business partners with polished professionalism before seamlessly shifting into warm, familiar conversation with family friends. Every smile, every handshake, every introduction came naturally.
She looked completely in her element.
Denisse smiled to herself.
She's probably not getting a chance to eat anything.
Seeing Lesley occupied, Denisse glanced toward another table tucked beneath a large white canopy.
The Ashford family.
Mrs. Ashford was in the middle of an animated story while Mr. Ashford listened with an expression that suggested he'd heard it more than once. Across from them, Leanne laughed, gently shaking her head.
It seemed like the perfect opportunity.
Denisse made her way over, weaving between tables until she reached them.
She rested a hand lightly against the back of an empty chair.
"Mind if I join you for a bit?"
The conversation paused almost instantly.
Mrs. Ashford looked up first.
Her face brightened.
"Oh, Denisse, dear!"
Without a second's hesitation, she stood and opened her arms.
"It's wonderful to see you."
Denisse couldn't help smiling as she leaned in to return the hug.
"It's wonderful to see you too, Mrs. Ashford."
She pulled back just enough to look at the older woman.
"I have to say..." A playful smile tugged at her lips. "You somehow look even younger than the last time I saw you."
Mrs. Ashford placed a hand dramatically against her chest.
"Oh, listen to this sweet girl."
Before she could bask in the compliment any longer, Mr. Ashford chuckled.
"Careful, Denisse."
He pointed playfully at his wife.
"Compliment her too much and it'll go straight to her head."
Mrs. Ashford gave him an indignant look.
"It most certainly will not."
"It absolutely will."
Denisse laughed.
She turned toward him with a grin.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Ashford."
"You look well."
"So do you."
She tilted her head thoughtfully.
"I'd say leading the Ashford Group seems a lot less stressful than running Prime Guard+ Technologies."
Mr. Ashford let out an exaggerated sigh.
"If only."
He leaned back in his chair.
"It's considerably more stressful."
He pointed toward his wife.
"I've simply been fortunate enough to have an assistant who's almost as competent as you."
"Almost?" Mrs. Ashford teased.
"She'll be very disappointed to hear that."
The table erupted into laughter.
Denisse shook her head.
"I'll take 'almost.'"
Only then did her gaze settle on the remaining woman at the table.
Leanne was dressed in a flowing floral dress that moved gently whenever the sea breeze swept through.
She smiled knowingly.
"Nice to see you again, Ms. Leanne."
Denisse gestured lightly toward her outfit.
"You look so gorgeous. That dress really suits you."
Leanne's smile widened.
"Oh?"
She looked Denisse up and down with deliberate exaggeration.
"And who's talking?"
She gestured toward Denisse's outfit.
"I think someone's stealing attention from the birthday celebrant."
Denisse glanced down at herself, suddenly feeling self-conscious.
Her fitted white sleeveless top paired with a matching skirt had seemed simple enough when she'd chosen it earlier.
Now, under everyone's amused attention, she wasn't so sure.
Leanne laughed softly.
"You look beautiful, Denisse."
A warm blush crept onto Denisse's cheeks.
"Thank you, Ms. Leanne."
Mrs. Ashford reached over and patted the empty chair beside her.
"Come."
Her smile was as warm as ever.
"Sit with us for a while."
Denisse looked briefly across the party.
Her eyes found Lesley again, still engaged in conversation with another group of guests.
Just for a moment.
Then she looked back at the family.
"I'd love to."
She pulled out the chair and settled beside Mrs. Ashford as the conversation resumed around her, the sounds of laughter, clinking glasses, and the rhythmic waves blending into the warm, easy atmosphere of the day.
-
Hours slipped by as effortlessly as the tide pulling away from the shore.
The afternoon unfolded into easy laughter, playful games, and a handful of short speeches that had everyone smiling. Glasses clinked together. Music drifted lazily through the warm sea breeze. Somewhere near the shoreline, a burst of laughter rose above the chatter as another group joined one of the party games.
The celebration felt alive.
Denisse found herself smiling more than she realized.
She and Gigi eventually wandered toward the cocktail booth, escaping the crowd for a moment. Each held a chilled margarita, condensation beading down the glasses and dampening their fingers. The citrus scent mixed with the salty ocean air, refreshing against the warmth of the afternoon.
For a while, neither of them spoke.
Denisse absentmindedly swirled the drink in her hand, her eyes drifting across the party.
Almost instinctively, they found Lesley.
Lesley seated at one of the round tables with her family.
Mr. Ashford was saying something that earned a laugh from several people around the table, but Denisse barely noticed. Her attention settled on the woman sitting among them instead.
The cream-colored dress caught the eye first, but it wasn't what held people's attention for long. She moved with an easy confidence that made the world around her seem to settle. Her posture never faltered, and her smile came and went with quiet restraint, as though she always knew exactly how much of herself to reveal.
It wasn't difficult to see why people remembered her. Or why she had once meant so much to Lesley.
Gigi followed Denisse's line of sight.
"Is that the ex?"
Denisse took a slow sip before answering.
"Yep." Her gaze lingered on the group. "The very one."
Gigi studied the woman for another second.
"Well..." she admitted. "She's beautiful. Definitely looks expensive."
A small grin tugged at the corner of Denisse's mouth.
"But she's nothing compared to you," Gigi finished matter-of-factly.
Denisse let out a quiet laugh and shook her head at Gigi's comment.
The smile lingered for only a moment before it slowly faded.
Her gaze drifted back to the round table where Lesley sat with her family.
"She's Lesley's only ex."
That earned Gigi's full attention.
"Really?" She turned to look at her. "Lesley told you that?"
"No."
Denisse rested one elbow against the counter.
"Her friends did. We were talking earlier while everyone was catching up."
Gigi hummed thoughtfully before taking another sip of her margarita.
Her gaze drifted back to Lesley's table as she slowly lowered her glass.
"Did they tell you why they broke up?" she asked quietly. "Or if that's what turned Ms. Ashford into..." She gave the glass a small, absent-minded swirl. "...the womanizer everyone says she became afterward?"
Denisse slowly shook her head.
"No."
She watched a bartender garnish another cocktail with a slice of lime before continuing.
"And honestly... I don't think it was their story to tell."
Her fingers tightened slightly around the glass.
"If there's something I should know..." she murmured, "...it should come from Lesley."
The answer seemed to make Gigi study her for a moment.
"Then why don't you ask her?" she said. "Aren't you curious?"
Denisse's gaze drifted back to Lesley's table.
Lesley was laughing at something her father had said, the smile on her face bright and effortless. Yet every so often, her eyes wandered beyond the table, skimming over the guests as if searching for someone in the crowd.
Denisse's heart gave a small, foolish flutter.
Was she...
Before the thought could take shape, she looked away.
She refused to build hope from a glance.
"I won't pretend I don't want to know," she admitted quietly. "I do." She adjusted her grip on the glass. "But I don't want to pry into her past."
She rubbed her thumb along the rim of her glass.
"If she's ready... she'll tell me."
Silence settled between them.
The waves rolled gently onto the shore behind them.
Gigi finally broke it.
"Is that really the reason?"
Denisse looked at her.
"Or..." Gigi tilted her head slightly, her voice softer this time. "...are you afraid of what you'll hear?"
Denisse felt something tighten inside her chest.
"Are you afraid she'll tell you she still hasn't let go of her past?" Gigi asked softly. "That that's why she still hasn't asked where the two of you stand?"
The words landed heavier than Denisse wanted to admit.
She lowered her eyes to the pale green cocktail in her hand.
It wasn't the first time that possibility had crept into her thoughts.
More than once.
Usually late at night.
Usually when she was alone.
"Gi..."
Gigi sighed.
"What?"
She nudged Denisse lightly with her shoulder.
"You two already do things couples do."
A knowing smile touched her lips.
"You two have gone on dates, slept together, and act like you're already together."
She shrugged.
"I think you've earned the right to ask whatever you want."
Denisse released a quiet breath.
"I know."
She did know.
God, she knew.
"But..." Her voice softened. "I don't want to force answers she's not ready to give."
Because she knew what it felt like to be cornered.
To be expected to speak before your heart was ready.
She would never do that to Lesley.
Gigi watched her for another moment before asking the question Denisse had been avoiding all day.
"So..."
She leaned one hip against the counter.
"Does any of this change what you're planning to do today?"
Denisse looked out toward the sea.
The horizon stretched endlessly before her, calm and impossibly blue.
Her stomach fluttered.
"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous."
She laughed softly, though it barely sounded like one.
"I have no idea what her answer will be."
She rolled the stem of the glass slowly between her fingers.
"I don't even know what we'll be after today."
Friends.
Something more.
Or strangers pretending none of this ever happened.
Every possibility played through her mind.
"But..."
She lifted her head.
"I still have to do this."
Her voice carried more certainty now.
"I need my answer."
She smiled faintly, though there was vulnerability behind it.
"And maybe..."
Her gaze found Lesley once again across the party.
"...maybe she needs this too."
To finally stop running.
To ask herself what this was.
"Maybe she'll realize she wants this just as much as I do."
Gigi didn't say anything right away.
She held her gaze for a long moment, her expression softening before she finally smiled.
"Good luck, babe."
Her voice was gentle.
"I really hope everything turns out the way it's supposed to."
She reached over and gave Denisse's hand a reassuring squeeze.
"You deserve clarity. And you deserve someone who's certain about choosing you."
Her eyes flicked toward Lesley before settling back on her friend.
"I just hope Ms. Ashford doesn't take that away from you."
Emotion warmed Denisse's chest.
"Thank you."
Gigi smiled again, softer this time.
"And if..."
She hesitated just long enough to choose her words.
"If things don't go the way you're hoping..."
Her hand squeezed Denisse's once more.
"...you won't go through it alone."
"I'm here."
"Always."
Denisse looked at her best friend and felt a lump rise in her throat.
She couldn't trust herself to speak.
Instead, she simply nodded.
Some words didn't need to be said.
