Chapter 77 - THE BIRTHDAY BASH

The day had finally arrived.

Lesley's birthday.

And, if everything went according to plan, the day Denisse would finally tell her how she felt.

The thought had been sitting in her chest since the moment she woke up, fluttering like a restless bird that refused to settle. Every mile they drove toward the coast made it beat a little harder.

"Five minutes," Gigi announced, squinting at the navigation app on her phone before flashing a grin that could outshine the morning sun. "We're almost there."

Denisse glanced at the map for only a second before turning her attention back to the road ahead.

The ocean had begun to appear between stretches of palm trees, brilliant blue beneath the cloudless sky. Even through the closed windows, she imagined she could already smell the salt carried by the sea breeze. The farther they drove, the lighter everything seemed to feel.

Well... almost everything.

Her stomach was still tied in knots.

Denisse's gaze flicked to the rearview mirror for what had to be the tenth time that morning.

Her beach bag rested on the back seat behind Gigi. The corner of a small velvet box peeked out from the bag's outer pocket.

Still there.

She let out a quiet breath and returned her attention to the road.

"OMG, I'm so excited!" Gigi beamed, practically bouncing in her seat. "I saved my brand-new swimsuit for this party. It's making its grand entrance today, and trust me, it's going to steal the show."

Denisse let out a laugh, shaking her head.

"You're more excited than I am."

"Of course I am." Gigi placed a hand dramatically over her heart. "This is a beach party. This is my Olympics."

Denisse couldn't help smiling. Only Gigi could treat the debut of a swimsuit like a red-carpet premiere.

The nervousness eased, if only for a moment.

The car turned through a pair of towering iron gates framed with flowering vines.

Denisse blinked.

"Oh..."

This wasn't a beachfront house.

It wasn't even a mansion.

Beyond the entrance stretched an entire luxury resort. Elegant villas dotted perfectly manicured gardens, each connected by winding stone pathways lined with tropical flowers. A gleaming lobby rose near the center of the property, its floor-to-ceiling glass walls reflecting the sky like polished crystal. Off to one side stood a spacious function hall already decorated with white and gold banners that fluttered lazily in the ocean breeze.

Farther ahead, the beach sparkled behind rows of swaying palm trees.

The place looked less like someone's birthday venue and more like the setting for celebrity weddings.

Gigi slowly lowered her sunglasses.

"Oh... wow."

Her voice had lost all its usual theatrics.

"They are really, really rich."

Denisse followed her gaze toward the immaculate grounds.

"Money was never something the Ashfords lacked," Denisse murmured. "But... I definitely underestimated what 'beachfront villa' meant."

She'd pictured a luxurious vacation house by the ocean.

Not an entire resort.

As they stepped out of the car, warm sea air wrapped around them immediately, carrying the scent of saltwater, blooming flowers, and sunscreen. Somewhere nearby, laughter drifted through the breeze while tropical music played softly in the distance.

Before they had time to admire more of the resort, a smiling employee approached them.

"Welcome to Paradise Palms, ma'ams." He offered each of them a chilled fruit drink, beads of condensation running down the glasses. "Please enjoy Ms. Ashford's birthday party."

A fresh flower lei was gently placed around Denisse's neck. The blossoms smelled sweet and delicate, cool against her skin.

"Thank you," she and Gigi said together.

The employee handed each of them a sleek white key card.

"Here are your room keycards. If you need anything during your stay, please don't hesitate to ask."

Denisse accepted hers, surprised.

Room keycards?

She watched as the other arriving guests were handed key cards of their own, each greeted with the same warm smiles and flower leis.

A realization slowly settled over her.

Lesley hadn't simply invited everyone to celebrate her birthday.

She had welcomed them into her family's resort, giving each guest their own villa so they could enjoy the weekend instead of just attending a party.

Denisse couldn't help shaking her head.

Owning a luxury beach resort was one thing. Treating it like the perfect place to host a birthday celebration for family and friends was something else entirely.

Gigi stared at the key card in her hand before slowly looking around, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

"I could seriously get used to this."

Denisse laughed under her breath.

"You'd never want to leave."

"Exactly." Gigi grabbed Denisse's wrist with unmistakable excitement. "Come on! Let's change already. I want to wear my beach outfit before everyone else gets there."

Denisse rolled her eyes affectionately.

"Okay, okay."

As Gigi practically dragged her toward the villas, Denisse cast one last look toward the beach.

Somewhere on this resort...

Lesley was waiting.

The thought sent another wave of butterflies through her stomach.

By the end of today, everything between them could change forever.

After settling into their villa rooms and changing into their beach outfits, Denisse and Gigi followed the sound of music toward the shoreline.

The party was already in full swing.

Long wooden tables decorated with tropical flowers were arranged on the soft white sand, while strings of lights hung between towering palm trees despite the afternoon sun still shining brightly overhead. A live acoustic band played easygoing beach tunes near a small stage, their melodies blending with the rhythmic crash of the waves. The scent of grilled seafood, barbecue, and fresh fruit drifted through the warm sea breeze, making the entire place feel like paradise.

Guests wandered from one booth to another, drinks in hand, laughing as they enjoyed the ocean view.

Denisse barely noticed any of it.

Her eyes instinctively searched for one person.

"There," Gigi murmured, nodding toward near the shoreline.

Denisse followed her gaze.

Her breath caught.

Lesley stood a short distance away, chatting with another guest. She wore a flowing white beach dress that hugged her figure just enough before loosening gracefully around her waist, dancing gently whenever the ocean breeze swept past. Sunlight caught the loose strands of her dark hair, making her seem almost unreal against the backdrop of the endless blue sea

Beautiful.

The word appeared in Denisse's mind before she could stop it.

No...

Beautiful wasn't enough.

For a few heartbeats, the noise of the party faded into the background as she simply watched.

Then Lesley looked up.

Their eyes met across the crowd.

A warm smile immediately spread across Lesley's face as she excused herself from the conversation.

"Hi," she greeted, walking over to them. "Hi, Gigi. I'm so glad you made it."

Gigi grinned.

"Oh, I wouldn't miss your birthday for the world, Boss." She dramatically glanced toward the nearby cocktail bar. "Besides, those fancy drinks have been flirting with me since we got here. I'll leave you two alone."

Denisse shot her best friend a look.

Traitor.

Lesley only smiled, clearly amused.

"Happy birthday, Boss," Gigi said, giving Lesley a quick hug before making a beeline for the bar.

"Thank you," Lesley replied with a laugh.

The moment Gigi disappeared into the crowd, a comfortable silence settled between them.

Denisse tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, suddenly very aware of how close they were.

"Happy birthday," she said softly.

Lesley's smile softened.

"Thank you."

Lesley's gaze swept over her, unhurried, before settling on her face.

Denisse's heart stumbled.

"I didn't expect my birthday gift to come wrapped in that gorgeous white top and long skirt."

Heat rushed to Denisse's cheeks.

"Lesley," she whispered, glancing around nervously. "Someone might hear you."

"And?" Lesley tilted her head with an unapologetic smile. "I don't care."

The words settled somewhere deep inside Denisse.

Her pulse skipped.

Did… did that mean something?

Denisse didn't even know why she was questioning it anymore. Somewhere along the way, it had started to feel like something unspoken already existed between them.

Like they both knew… but just never said it out loud.

She swallowed, her thoughts quieting.

Perhaps it had never been about whether Lesley felt the same.

Perhaps it was only about hearing her say it.

Her chest tightened with a small, steady hope as the thought settled in.

Maybe…

When she finally confessed later today…

She would hear the answer she'd been longing for.

No.

Not yet.

She gently pushed the thought aside before it could carry her away.

There was still an entire party ahead of them.

Before either of them could say another word, several familiar voices approached.

"There she is!"

Lesley looked up just as the rest of their group arrived.

The whole gang.

"Happy birthday, babe!" Alexandra exclaimed, wrapping Lesley in a warm hug.

"Thanks," Lesley replied, hugging her back.

"My favorite bitch!" Athena declared as she swept in next, earning an immediate laugh from everyone nearby.

Lesley laughed harder as she hugged Athena.

"Happy birthday."

"Thanks."

One after another, Stacy, Zoe, and Sam stepped forward to greet her with hugs and birthday wishes until the circle was filled with laughter once again.

Alexandra's attention shifted toward Denisse.

"Oh, hi, Denisse." She smiled warmly. "You look absolutely stunning today."

Denisse smiled, feeling her cheeks warm all over again.

"Thank you."

Lesley glanced toward Stacy and Zoe with an amused smile.

"I honestly thought you two wouldn't make it because of baby Sebby."

Stacy laughed.

"I left him with my brother for the weekend. We deserve a little escape every now and then." She slipped her hand into Zoe's. "Right, babe?"

Zoe smiled, giving her fingers a gentle squeeze.

"Definitely. And there's no way we'd miss your special day."

A shift in the air came before the voice did.

Denisse felt it first in the way laughter thinned. The lively hum around them dulled almost imperceptibly. Conversations didn't stop, not exactly, but they softened at the edges—like people were deciding, without saying it, to pay attention to something else.

Then came the voice.

"Hello, girls."

Denisse didn't need to turn to know who it was. The tone alone carried a kind of practiced ease, smooth and unhurried, like it never had to ask for space because space always made room for it.

Daphne.

A few of Lesley's friends turned first, their expressions brightening in automatic recognition.

"Hi, Daphne," they said together, almost in sync.

Denisse finally looked.

Daphne stood a few steps away, sunlight tracing the edges of her silhouette. Everything about her looked intentional without appearing forced—the fall of her hair, the clean lines of her dress, the way she carried herself with effortless confidence.

"I'm really glad to see you all again," Daphne said, smiling as if she'd been missing something important and not just arriving late. "Things have been nonstop since I came back. The security upgrade project has been taking over my life—I barely had time to come by."

"It's fine," Alexandra said quickly, warm and welcoming. "How have you been? You look gorgeous today."

Daphne gave a small laugh, soft and unbothered. "Thank you."

Stacy tilted her head slightly, openly appreciative now. "That dress is amazing. Seriously, you could model for that brand."

Denisse stayed where she was.

Quiet. Still.

Watching.

It wasn't just Daphne's beauty that made something tight coil in Denisse's chest. It was the ease of it. The way she didn't seem to perform confidence—it simply existed in her, like she'd never had to assemble herself before walking into a room.

Denisse noticed the way people adjusted around her without realizing. Shoulders angled in her direction. Smiles held a fraction longer. Even the air seemed to organize itself around Daphne's presence.

She hated how obvious it felt. And worse, how effortless it all looked.

Denisse's fingers curled subtly at her side, nails pressing into her palm just enough to ground herself.

How do you even stand next to someone like that?

Someone who didn't seem to compete because she didn't need to.

A voice cut through her thoughts, low and close enough that it didn't belong to the group anymore.

"Trust me," Lesley murmured, her eyes still forward, her expression composed as though she were commenting on nothing particularly important. "I've known them long enough to know exactly what they're thinking. They all think you look better."

The words landed with quiet certainty.

A brief pause followed—small enough that no one else would have marked it as anything at all.

Then her voice softened just enough to stay between them.

"And I agree. More than they do."

This time, she didn't immediately continue speaking. She let it hang there, unclaimed for a beat too long, like she was giving Denisse space to hear it properly without interference.

Only then did Lesley finally shift.

Not fully turning, not openly breaking the moment—but enough.

Denisse froze for half a beat.

Then something inside her loosened—quietly, unexpectedly, like a knot slipping free that she hadn't realized she'd been holding for too long.

Her breath came easier.

She exhaled through her nose and forced her shoulders to soften, just slightly. A small smile returned, not fully formed but enough to keep her from feeling exposed.

"Happy birthday, Lesley," Daphne said, turning fully toward her as she spoke.

Before the words even settled, she stepped forward.

The movement was smooth, unhesitating. Too natural, like she had already decided what she was going to do before anyone else had the chance to react.

She hugged Lesley.

Denisse saw Lesley's body register it a second later—an almost imperceptible stiffness, a brief pause where surprise took hold before politeness stepped in.

And then Daphne kissed her cheek.

Light. Familiar. Confident in a way that made it feel like a statement even if it wasn't spoken aloud.

Denisse's jaw tightened before she could stop it.

The atmosphere shifted again, subtly this time. Not loud enough for anyone to comment on, but enough that it was there—awkward glances exchanged between Lesley's friends, eyebrows lifting, silent questions passing between them like notes being folded and refolded.

Denisse wasn't the only one who felt it.

Lesley stepped back carefully, creating space as if distance could reset the moment.

"Thank you," Lesley said. Her voice stayed steady, polite, but something in it had closed slightly, like a door eased shut but not locked.

Daphne smiled as though nothing had changed at all.

Then she lifted a box into view.

It was elegant even before anyone opened it—wrapped or packaged in a way that suggested cost without needing to announce it.

"I brought your gift," Daphne said lightly. "I hope you like it."

"Thanks," Lesley said, accepting the gift with both hands. Her fingers lingered around the box for a brief moment before she gestured to one of the nearby staff members.

"Could you place this on the gift table, please?"

The employee accepted it with a nod and carefully carried it away.

Daphne's gaze drifted, finally landing where Denisse stood a little off to the side.

"Oh, hi Denisse," she said.

The words were light. Casual.

But there was a pause before them—so slight most people wouldn't have noticed it. The kind of pause that made it feel less like greeting someone and more like acknowledging something she'd only just remembered was there.

Denisse felt it immediately.

Like she had been part of the background this entire time.

Still, she straightened. Kept her voice even.

"Hi, Ms. Philipps," she replied.

Polite. Controlled. Practiced.

Her expression didn't move, but inside she was acutely aware of everything Daphne had already done in the span of minutes. The hug. The kiss. The way she had stepped into Lesley's space like it was already familiar terrain.

Denisse held onto composure like it was something physical.

A waiter passed through the group then, the tray balanced with quiet precision. Glasses caught the light as he moved.

"Wine, ladies?" he offered.

Almost immediately, hands reached out.

A shared pause of social ease. Something to hold. Something to do.

Denisse took one too.

The glass was cool against her fingers. The scent rose faintly—crisp, floral, expensive enough that it didn't need to announce itself.

They all sipped.

A few satisfied hums followed.

"Oh, this is good," Zoe said, tilting her glass slightly as she looked at it.

Daphne's smile returned, subtle and knowing, like she'd been waiting for that exact reaction.

"Yes, it is," she said. "It's Luneclair Moonlight."

Denisse's grip on her glass didn't change, but something in her attention sharpened instantly.

Daphne continued, voice smooth as ever.

"Lesley's favorite. How could I forget, right, Lesley?"

There it was again.

That careful threading of history into the present. Not quite a declaration, but close enough to feel intentional. Like she was brushing past old familiarity and letting everyone see the dust it left behind.

Denisse watched Lesley from the corner of her eye.

Lesley took another sip.

A slow one.

Then she smiled.

Wider than before. Easier, almost glowing with recognition.

"Oh yes," Lesley said, swirling the wine slowly before taking a small sip. "This is my favorite. Really my favorite."

She held the glass near her lips a moment longer than necessary, gaze lowered into it like she was studying something only she could see. The afternoon sun caught her face in soft edges—calm, composed—but there was a hint of something playful tucked behind her expression, waiting.

"I tasted her once," she added lightly, voice dipping just enough to turn it teasing, almost lazy on the tongue, "and I never wanted to get it out of my mouth."

The sentence landed quietly.

But it didn't land lightly.

The beachfront carried on around them—glasses clinking, quiet laughter, distant conversations, and the rhythmic crash of waves—but Denisse felt everything else fade into a dull blur.

Her breath caught before she could stop it.

Heat crept up her neck in a slow, unmistakable wave, spreading under her skin until she was suddenly aware of every inch of herself: the glass in her hand, the tension in her fingers, the careful way she had to keep her expression still.

Her grip tightened around the stem until the glass felt like the only solid thing left around her.

Because she knew.

She knew that tone.

That deliberate softness at the edge of Lesley's voice. The way she didn't rush the words, like she was letting them linger just long enough to be understood twice.

Denisse forced herself to look up again.

Lesley was still holding her glass near her lips.

Still smiling.

But now her eyes lifted too—slowly, intentionally—leaving the wine behind as her gaze found Denisse across the space between them.

And there it was.

A teasing smile, small and knowing, curling at the corner of her mouth like she was holding back a secret she had no intention of explaining.

Her eyes stayed on Denisse.

Unblinking.

Unhurried.

Like she was letting Denisse decide what part of that sentence she was supposed to hear.

Denisse's throat went dry.

Not from the wine.

From the look that said Lesley absolutely knew exactly what she was doing.
