Chapter 1 - The Wrong man

The message read:

"Table 7. 7:00 PM. I'll be wearing black."

Lila Bennett stared at her phone for the tenth time that evening, her thumb hovering over the screen as if the words might suddenly change.

They didn't.

"This is insane," she muttered under her breath.

She wasn't the type to go on blind dates. Not because she thought she was above it—but because life had never given her the luxury to gamble on strangers. Between unpaid rent, freelance deadlines, and a younger brother depending on her, romance had always come last.

Or never.

Yet here she was.

Standing outside one of the most elegant restaurants in the city.

Lila inhaled deeply, straightened her simple blue dress, and stepped inside.

The restaurant was warm, dimly lit, and filled with quiet conversations and soft music. The kind of place where people fell in love—or finalized business deals worth millions.

Lila didn't belong in either category.

Her eyes scanned the room.

Table 7.

There.

A man sat alone, dressed in black.

Her heart skipped.

He didn't look like what she expected.

He looked… dangerous.

Not in a threatening way—but in a controlled, powerful, unreadable way. His posture was relaxed, yet there was an intensity around him, like someone used to being in control of everything.

Including people.

Lila hesitated.

Then shook her head.

It's just a date.

She walked toward him.

Adrian Cole didn't like waiting.

Time was the one thing even his wealth couldn't buy more of—so he didn't waste it.

Yet tonight, he sat still.

No assistants.

No guards.

No expectations.

Just silence.

It had been years since he allowed himself something this… normal.

A blind date.

The idea had come from his younger cousin, who insisted that Adrian needed "human interaction that wasn't transactional."

Adrian had almost laughed.

Almost.

Then he agreed.

Not because he believed in love—but because he was curious.

"Hi… are you my blind date?"

The voice pulled him out of his thoughts.

Adrian looked up.

And for a moment—

Everything paused.

She wasn't what he expected either.

No designer dress.

No calculated smile.

No pretense.

Just a girl with slightly nervous eyes, genuine curiosity, and a quiet strength that didn't need attention.

Interesting.

Adrian studied her for a second longer than necessary.

Then made a decision.

"Yes."

That single word sealed a mistake neither of them would forget.

Lila smiled, relief washing over her face as she sat down.

"I was worried I'd get this wrong," she admitted.

Adrian leaned back slightly, observing her.

"You didn't."

Technically true.

Just not in the way she thought.

Their conversation started simple.

Names.

Work.

Life.

But quickly, it became something else.

Effortless.

Lila found herself laughing more than she had in weeks.

"You don't seem like someone who'd agree to a blind date," she said, tilting her head.

Adrian raised an eyebrow. "What does that mean?"

"It means you look like someone who doesn't have time for… this."

He almost smiled.

"You might be right."

Across the room, a man lowered his phone slowly.

A picture had just been taken.

Of Adrian.

And Lila.

"Do you always analyze people this much?" Adrian asked.

"Only when they're mysterious."

"And am I?"

Lila met his gaze.

"Yes."

Silence stretched between them.

Not awkward.

Charged.

For the first time in a long time, Adrian felt something unfamiliar.

Interest.

Not in a business deal.

Not in power.

But in a person.

Hours passed unnoticed.

When Lila finally checked the time, her eyes widened.

"Oh my God—I didn't realize it was this late."

"Time moves differently when you're not watching it," Adrian said calmly.

She smiled softly.

"Yeah… I guess it does."

Outside, the night air was cool.

Lila hugged herself lightly.

"This was… nice," she admitted.

Adrian looked at her.

Nice wasn't the word he'd use.

But he didn't correct her.

Across the street, a black car sat parked.

Engine running.

Watching.

"I should go," Lila said.

Adrian nodded.

But neither of them moved immediately.

As if leaving would break something that had just begun.

"Will I see you again?" she asked, surprising even herself.

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

Because this—

This wasn't supposed to happen.

Then again…

Neither was she.

"Yes," he said finally.

As Lila walked away, she felt something she hadn't expected.

Hope.

Behind her, Adrian's expression darkened slightly.

His phone buzzed.

A message flashed on the screen:

"They know where you are."

Adrian looked up sharply.

Toward the direction Lila had just disappeared.

For the first time that night—

He realized something.

This wasn't just a mistake.

It might be a danger.

And she had just walked straight into it.
