Pikachu shot across the field like a bolt of golden lightning, heading straight for the massive Dragonite.
"The same old opening, Julian. Dragonite, intercept with Extreme Speed!"
Silver Wolf and Julian had clashed thousands of times during the game's development. She was intimately familiar with his reliance on Quick Attack to close the gap or bait out a defensive move. In the digital logic of the game, Extreme Speed was the ultimate counter—a move with even higher priority and devastating force.
A flash of white light enveloped Dragonite as it vanished, reappearing mid-air as a blur of raw kinetic energy.
In every previous match, this was where Julian's momentum would break. Whether he tried to have Pikachu dodge or use Substitute, the speed of the Dragon was simply too high to react to once the command was issued. Silver Wolf looked at Julian with the smug confidence of a programmer who knew the limits of the hardware.
To her surprise, Julian was laughing.
The next moment—before Julian even opened his mouth to give an order—Pikachu's body twisted mid-dash. With an agility that defied standard AI pathing, the mouse didn't try to clash; it pirouetted, brushing past the white streak of Dragonite by a hair's breadth.
Pikachu skidded to a halt, its paws digging a shallow trench into the holographic grass. Dragonite, caught by its own massive inertia and the sheer speed of the charge, struggled to pivot its heavy frame.
"Thunderbolt, now!" Julian seized the opening with a sharp, concise command.
"Pika-CHUU!"
"Dragonite, use—"
Silver Wolf's counter-command died in her throat. The bolt of lightning struck Dragonite just as it managed to turn around, the electrical discharge rattling its scales. While a non-effective hit wouldn't take down a Dragonite, the sheer fluidity of the exchange left Silver Wolf stunned.
"Is this... the intelligence you were talking about?"
In a normal match, no AI would make that choice. The underlying code Silver Wolf herself had helped write didn't allow for autonomous evasion during a high-speed priority clash. It was a safety measure they'd agreed on: if the AI could override the player to "play better," it would lead to a loss of control and a frustrating user experience.
"You didn't 'tweak' its stats beforehand, did you?" Silver Wolf asked, her eyes narrowing as she looked at Julian.
"I'd never be so unethical," Julian replied, his hands glowing with the faint golden light of the Path. "I simply preserved the Remembrance of our thousands of battles and fed it into the projection. Pikachu didn't need me to tell it to dodge. It's fought your Dragonite enough times to know exactly where the hit was coming from."
Silver Wolf realized the truth. By giving the Pokémon their memories, Julian had eliminated the "Command Latency." The Pokémon wasn't waiting for a signal to travel from the Trainer's brain to the server; it was reacting on instinct.
"Fine. A head-start for the developer," she huffed, her competitive fire burning hotter. "But don't think I'm playing the same game anymore. Dragonite, stay focused!"
"That was just the handshake," Julian teased. "Pikachu, Double Team! Get in close!"
A dozen shimmering afterimages of Pikachu erupted across the field, a golden tide rushing toward the Dragon.
"Clear the field! Dragonite, use Twister!"
Dragonite's wings beat violently, summoning a fierce hurricane that tore through the holographic forest, shredding the afterimages into digital dust. Julian frowned. Wind was an area-of-effect force; you couldn't just dodge it with speed.
"Pikachu, use Iron Tail as an anchor! Dive!"
Pikachu responded instantly. Instead of running, the real Pikachu slammed its glowing metallic tail deep into a crevice in the stadium floor, flattening its body against the ground. The storm roared overhead, tearing away the remaining clones. Pikachu's small frame was buffeted, its fur rippling in the gale, but the "Iron Anchor" held firm.
The moment the wind subsided, Julian didn't miss a beat. "Go! Quick Attack!"
Because Pikachu was already low to the ground and positioned inside the storm's eye, it launched forward like a spring. Dragonite was still recovering from the exertion of the Twister when Pikachu slammed into its chest.
"Follow up with Iron Tail!"
"Dragonite, strike back with Fire Punch!"
The metallic tail clashed against the fist of living flame. Sparks flew as the two traded blows in a rapid-fire sequence of strikes. However, the elemental math was cold: Steel was weak to Fire. After a few heavy collisions, Pikachu was visibly flagging, its paws singed.
Without waiting for Julian to tell it to retreat, Pikachu used the momentum of the last clash to backflip away, creating distance between itself and the looming Dragon.
"The soul isn't just about smart moves, Silver Wolf," Julian said, his eyes bright. "It's about knowing when the math isn't in your favor."
