Chapter 31 - chapter 31

The next three days were strangely calm.

Too calm.

Ethan hated it.

Not because he wanted another fight—

But because silence gave him time to think.

And lately, thinking had become dangerous.

He stood near the apartment window, staring down at the crowded street below.

Cars moved.

People laughed.

Shops opened and closed.

Normal life continued like nothing strange existed beneath the surface of the city.

But Ethan knew better now.

There were layers hidden underneath everything.

People watching.

Organizations moving.

Threats waiting.

And somewhere among them—

People were still monitoring him.

"You've been standing there for twenty minutes."

Lena's voice pulled him back slightly.

He glanced over his shoulder.

She sat on the couch holding two cups of coffee.

"…Didn't notice," Ethan admitted.

"I know."

She walked over and handed him one.

Their fingers brushed slightly.

For a brief moment—

The connection reacted instinctively.

Small.

Gentle.

Stable.

Not like before.

Not overwhelming.

Controlled.

Ethan noticed immediately.

"…It's steadier."

Lena smiled faintly.

"…That's good, right?"

Ethan nodded slowly.

"…Yeah."

The fracture still existed.

He could feel it every time he focused too hard.

Like tension inside his mind that refused to fully settle.

But compared to before—

It had improved.

Not healed.

Improved.

Kai walked into the room without warning.

As usual.

"You're recovering."

Ethan sighed.

"…You know, normal people knock."

Kai ignored the comment completely.

"…Your structure is stabilizing faster than expected."

Lena crossed her arms.

"…Does he ever stop saying things like we're experiments?"

Kai actually looked thoughtful for a second.

"…No."

Ethan almost laughed.

Almost.

Kai stepped closer.

"…How does it feel?"

Ethan considered the question carefully.

"…Slower."

Kai nodded.

"…Good."

"That's good?"

"Yes."

Kai leaned against the wall.

"…You relied too much on instinct before."

A pause.

"Now you're being forced to think before acting."

Ethan frowned slightly.

Because that was true.

Before, his reactions had flowed naturally through the connection.

Fast.

Automatic.

Dangerously efficient.

But now—

Everything required effort.

Focus.

Precision.

And honestly?

It was exhausting.

"…I still feel the instability," Ethan admitted quietly.

Kai nodded once.

"…You should."

Ethan stared at him.

"…You really don't know how comforting works."

"It's inefficient."

Lena rolled her eyes.

"…One day I'm seriously locking you outside."

Kai ignored that too.

Then—

His expression shifted slightly.

Not dramatic.

But enough for Ethan to notice.

"…Something changed," Ethan said immediately.

Kai looked at him.

"…Good."

That wasn't an answer.

"…Kai."

Kai crossed his arms.

"…The organization moved."

The room became still instantly.

Ethan straightened slightly.

"…How?"

"They've expanded observation zones."

Lena frowned.

"…Meaning?"

Kai's voice stayed calm.

"…Meaning you're no longer considered a local problem."

Silence.

That didn't sound good.

"…Then what am I?" Ethan asked.

Kai's eyes narrowed slightly.

"A developing anomaly."

Ethan exhaled slowly.

"…That sounds worse."

"It is."

Of course it was.

Kai pushed away from the wall.

"…You attracted attention."

Ethan's gaze sharpened.

"…Higher-level?"

Kai nodded.

"…Yes."

A quiet tension settled over the room.

Because until now—

Everything had felt contained.

Localized.

Controlled within the city.

But if outside groups were noticing—

Then things were becoming bigger.

Far bigger.

"…How many organizations are there?" Lena asked quietly.

Kai looked at her.

"…More than you want to know."

That answer alone said enough.

Ethan felt the weight of it settle heavily in his chest.

This wasn't just one hidden system.

It was an entire world.

One he had stepped into without understanding the scale.

"…And they're all like this?" Ethan asked.

Kai tilted his head slightly.

"…No."

A pause.

"Some are worse."

That wasn't reassuring.

At all.

Ethan looked back toward the window.

The city suddenly felt smaller than before.

"…So what happens now?" he asked.

Kai answered immediately.

"…You stay alive."

"…That's the plan?"

"For now."

Ethan rubbed the back of his neck slowly.

The fracture pulsed faintly again.

A reminder.

Not healed yet.

Kai noticed immediately.

"…Still unstable?"

Ethan nodded.

"…Only when I push too hard."

Kai studied him silently for a moment.

"…Then don't."

Ethan almost smiled.

"…You make everything sound simple."

"It usually is."

Lena laughed softly from behind them.

"…I'm starting to think that's his superpower."

Kai actually smirked slightly.

A rare sight.

Then—

The atmosphere shifted again.

Ethan felt it first.

A faint ripple.

Distant.

But familiar.

His expression hardened immediately.

"…Someone's here."

Lena stood up instantly.

"…Another attack?"

Ethan focused carefully.

The ripple felt strange.

Different.

Not hostile.

But powerful.

"…No," he said slowly.

"…This feels… controlled."

Kai's expression sharpened.

For the first time in days—

He looked genuinely serious.

"…Interesting."

Ethan looked at him.

"…You know who it is?"

Kai stayed silent for a second too long.

Then—

"…Possibly."

That alone raised Ethan's alertness immediately.

Because Kai almost never hesitated.

The ripple grew stronger.

Closer.

Then—

A single figure appeared outside the apartment building entrance below.

Tall.

Dark coat.

Calm posture.

Even from this distance—

Ethan could feel the difference.

Not pressure.

Not aggression.

Authority.

The figure looked up directly toward Ethan's window.

And smiled faintly.

Ethan's chest tightened slightly.

"…They know I'm here."

Kai stepped beside him at the window.

His eyes narrowed.

"…Of course they do."

Lena moved closer.

"…Who is that?"

Kai's voice lowered slightly.

For the first time—

There was real caution in it.

"…Someone you don't want attention from."

The figure below slowly raised one hand.

Not threatening.

Not aggressive.

An invitation.

Ethan stared down at them.

The connection inside him shifted uneasily.

Not from fear.

But instinct.

Something about this person felt dangerous in a completely different way.

Not like the others.

More controlled.

More complete.

Like someone who already understood things Ethan was only beginning to learn.

"…They came personally," Kai muttered.

Ethan looked at him sharply.

"…That matters?"

Kai nodded once.

"Yes."

A pause.

"It means Arc Two is over."

Silence filled the room.

Because Ethan understood immediately.

This wasn't another observer.

Another test.

Another coordinated attack.

This—

Was escalation.

Real escalation.

And somehow—

Deep down—

Ethan knew.

Everything after this moment would become far more dangerous than before.
