Chapter 5 - The Asphalt Gridlock

The dark grey Ford surged onto the two-lane state highway, its tires spitting gravel as Alex fought to keep the steering wheel straight. The thick countryside fog was finally beginning to burn off under the pale morning sun, but the clarity it brought offered no comfort.

The road ahead was a graveyard of steel.

"Alex, slow down! Watch the shoulder!" Dani yelled, her knuckles white as she gripped the dashboard.

Cars were abandoned at jagged angles across both lanes. Doors hung wide open, luggage was scattered across the asphalt, and the unmistakable, dark crimson smears of fresh violence stained the hoods and cracked windshields of the dead vehicles. The infection hadn't just crept into the countryside; it had met the fleeing populace head-on.

Alex slammed her foot on the brake, bringing the Ford to a screeching halt just inches from an overturned delivery van blocking the center of the road.

"We're cut off," Alex gasped, her breath fogging up the inside of the windshield. "Mom, the whole road is blocked. We can't get through to the highway."

From behind them, a low, collective drone began to vibrate through the chassis of the car. Alex glanced at her rearview mirror. Shuffling out from the tree line on both sides of the road were dozens of figures. Some wore business suits, others wore pajamas, but all of them moved with the same stiff, predatory jerky motion. Their milky, bloodshot eyes were locked entirely on the idling Ford.

"They're coming from the woods," Dani whispered, her voice dropping into a cold survival register as she lifted the iron tire bar. "Reverse. Now."

"There's no room to turn around!" Alex panicked, looking at the narrow ditches bordering the asphalt. "If I drop a tire in the mud, we're stuck."

Suddenly, a violent impact rattled the driver-side door. Alex screamed as a face slammed against her side window—it was a young man, his jaw completely shattered and hanging by a shred of muscle, his teeth gnashing mindlessly against the glass. Thick, contaminated fluid smeared across the window pane as he clawed at the handle.

Before Alex could react, a loud, sharp *crack* echoed from the roof of the car. Something heavy had dropped onto the Ford from the overpass above.

The sunroof shattered inward.

A pair of pale, decayed hands reached through the opening, scratching wildly at Alex's hair and shoulders. The stench of iron, wet earth, and rotting flesh flooded the small cabin, instantly reminding Alex of the tainted well water.

"Get off her!" Dani roared.

With a brutal, upward swing, Dani shoved the iron tire iron through the shattered sunroof, driving it squarely into the infected attacker's chest. The creature let out a wet, gurgling gasp and was thrown backward off the roof as Alex slammed the car into reverse.

The Ford roared backward, smashing into two shuffling infected who had closed the gap behind them. The tires thudded over the bodies, the chassis shaking violently, but the car kept moving. Alex spun the wheel hard, dropping the backend of the car onto a small dirt tractor trail she hadn't noticed before—a narrow path cutting straight through a massive cornfield.

"Go, go, go!" Dani shouted, clearing the remaining glass from the sunroof with her gloved hand.

Alex shifted into drive and floored the accelerator. The Ford plunged into the towering rows of corn, the dry stalks slapping violently against the front bumper and windshield like a solid wall of green and yellow. They were driving blind, guided only by the narrow ruts of the tractor path, leaving the asphalt gridlock—and the growing horde—trapped in the fog behind them.
