Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Answers Beneath the Light /

A golden line of sunlight spilled across the edge of the desk. The history teacher adjusted his glasses and scribbled a difficult question on the chalkboard: "If you lived in ancient civilizations, how would you explain the formation of 'faith and order'?"

The teacher's voice was steady, like a brand attempting to sear itself into everyone's mind. Most students lowered their heads, lost for an answer. Only from the row by the window did Xiao Qian's hand rise quietly.

"Teacher," he said, his voice as calm as a motionless lake, "Faith itself is a product of humanity's fear of the unknown, while order is the structure created to soothe that fear. They depend on and balance each other."

The classroom fell into a sudden dead silence. The teacher paused, then gave an approving smile. "A fresh perspective, and quite piercing."

Lin Mo looked up, observing Xiao Qian seriously for the first time. That way of thinking—it was far beyond what an ordinary student would say. A cold thought flashed through his mind: This person is far from normal.

The light from the window grew blinding, casting a near-transparent stillness over Xiao Qian's profile. Lin Mo's chest tightened as that inexplicable palpitation surfaced again, accompanied by a sense of inescapable pressure.

Just then, Qian Qizhang turned slightly in the front row, his peripheral vision caught by a thin necklace slipping from Xiao Qian's collar. It was a pendant with a light blue crystal, flickering like ripples of water—strangely familiar.

Qian Qizhang's pupils dilated instantly as memories flooded back like icy tides. He remembered a night when he was five, a blurred silhouette outside the laboratory pod handing him an identical blue crystal pendant. That voice, gentle yet distant, had said: "This is your true token. Remember, let no one see it."

His heart raced violently. He stared at the necklace, nearly forgetting he was still in the classroom. When the bell rang, Xiao Qian packed his notes and left without looking back. Lin Mo stared at the empty seat, his intuition growing stronger—this wasn't a coincidence.

After school, Lin Mo returned to his apartment, only to find a familiar face standing before the newly installed door next door. Xiao Qian was holding a key card, looking down as he tried to unlock it.

"You—live here?" Lin Mo froze in place.

Xiao Qian looked up and smiled faintly. "Yeah, looks like we're neighbors now."

The motion-sensor lights in the hallway flickered, stretching their shadows long. Lin Mo's fingertips involuntarily tightened as that strange sensation exploded within him again—this wasn't a chance encounter; it felt more like a pre-programmed reunion.
