Chapter 5 - Chapter 5:THE ANOMALY

The moment their eyes locked, Devin felt it.

Not just danger.

Predation.

The Anomaly's stare felt like claws scraping across his instincts. Every nerve in his body screamed run, but another, darker impulse rose from deeper within, the wolf. It did not want to run.

It wanted to fight.

A cold shiver ran down his spine. His breathing sharpened. Muscles tensed.

He didn't hesitate.

Bones cracked.

His shoulders widened as black fur burst through his skin. Fingers elongated into claws. His jaw pushed forward, teeth sharpening into fangs. The oversized hoodie tore apart as his body expanded, muscles bulging unnaturally.

Within seconds, Devin stood fully transformed, the pitch-black werewolf, towering and hyper-muscular despite his young age.

But he barely had time to move.

The Anomaly vanished.

Not literally rather, it moved so fast that Devin's eyes couldn't track it.

Then

Impact.

The creature appeared directly in front of him and slammed a fist into his chest.

The sound was like a car crash.

Devin's body folded inward as he was launched across the street, smashing through a mailbox and skidding along asphalt. Pain exploded through his ribs.

He tried to stand.

The Anomaly was already there.

Another blow struck, this time to the side of his head. The world spun. His vision blurred. He felt himself lifted off the ground and thrown again, crashing into a parked car. The metal dented around him.

He hadn't even landed properly when the creature grabbed his leg and slammed him repeatedly into the ground.

Boom.

Boom.

Boom.

Each impact rattled his bones. Cracks formed in the pavement beneath him. His ears rang.

Fear surged.

Raw, primal fear.

This thing was stronger. Faster. More experienced. It wasn't playing.

It was hunting.

The Anomaly slammed him one last time and kicked him across the street. Devin rolled violently, finally stopping near a shattered streetlight.

For a brief moment, he lay still.

Then his chest heaved.

He was terrified.

But beneath that terror

Excitement.

A feral grin slowly stretched across his wolfish face.

His bloodline reacted.

It always did.

His heart pounded faster. Muscles twitched. Something deep inside his DNA began shifting. The werewolf lineage didn't just grant power,it adapted.

His body analyzed the blows.

Speed… force… reaction time… durability thresholds.

Pain became information.

The Anomaly rushed him again.

This time Devin barely raised his arms before another strike smashed into him. He was knocked back, but he didn't go as far. His feet dug into the asphalt, claws scraping.

His durability was already increasing.

The Anomaly tilted its head slightly, as if noticing.

Then it attacked faster.

A flurry of blows landed. Devin blocked one, took two, dodged half of another. He was still getting beaten badly, but something was changing.

His reaction time sharpened.

His muscles tightened.

His claws flexed.

The Anomaly grabbed his throat and lifted him off the ground. Devin choked, kicking uselessly. The creature squeezed harder.

For a moment, true fear returned.

He might die.

And that thought triggered something deeper.

His pupils narrowed to slits. His muscles swelled slightly. The black fur along his back bristled as a low growl escaped his throat.

The Anomaly slammed him into a wall.

Cracks spread across the brick.

Devin's vision flickered.

Then

He caught the Anomaly's wrist.

For the first time.

The creature paused.

Devin's grip tightened.

His claws dug into its skin.

The Anomaly jerked, surprised by the resistance.

Devin roared not in confidence, but in instinctive defiance.

He swung his other arm wildly, catching the Anomaly across the shoulder. The hit barely moved it, but it was something.

The creature responded by punching him directly in the face.

The blow shattered nearby windows from the shockwave.

Devin flew backward again, tumbling across the street.

He struggled up, wobbling.

He was losing badly.

But he wasn't the same as thirty seconds ago.

His breathing steadied. His posture lowered. His muscles felt… denser.

The bloodline continued evolving.

Adapting to speed.

Adapting to strength.

Adapting to survival.

The Anomaly rushed again, but this time Devin saw it, not fully, but enough to brace. The impact still hurt, but he slid instead of being launched.

His claws carved trenches into the pavement as he resisted.

The creature pressed forward.

Devin snarled.

Fear and excitement blended into something dangerous.

He was still terrified.

But now…

He wanted to see how far he could evolve before breaking.

And deep inside his genetic memory, the wolf whispered:

Survive… and grow stronger.

The creature lunged again.

But this time, Devin moved first.

Not faster, not yet but smarter.

He twisted his torso sideways, letting the Anomaly's strike graze his shoulder instead of hitting his chest. Even so, the force spun him around and cracked something in his arm. Pain flared hot and immediate.

He didn't retreat.

He stepped into the pain.

His claws slashed downward, scraping across the Anomaly's torso. Sparks and dark fluid sprayed as his strike finally drew visible damage. The creature recoiled slightly not hurt badly, but surprised.

Devin's eyes widened.

He could hurt it now.

The realization fueled him.

The Anomaly responded with overwhelming aggression, swinging both arms like battering rams. Devin ducked one, took another to the ribs, and felt bone fracture. The sound echoed inside his body.

Crack.

He staggered.

The Anomaly kicked him through the wall of a nearby convenience store. Glass exploded outward. Shelves toppled. Food and debris scattered everywhere.

Devin lay in the rubble, chest rising and falling rapidly. His ribs throbbed. One arm hung slightly off-angle.

But something else happened.

The pain faded faster than it should.

Not healed, not fully but muted.

His muscles tightened around the broken bone, stabilizing it. His body was learning mid-fight.

He pushed himself up.

Outside, the Anomaly tore through the building wall to reach him again. Concrete chunks flew like bullets. Devin rolled to the side, barely avoiding a crushing stomp that shattered the floor.

He countered with a sweeping kick, not strong enough to knock it down, but enough to disrupt its balance. He followed immediately with a claw strike to the knee joint.

The Anomaly stumbled.

For the first time, Devin gained ground.

They crashed into the street again, their battle escalating. Cars were tossed aside. A streetlight bent and fell. Asphalt cracked under repeated impacts.

People had fled by now, but the destruction spread across the block.

The Anomaly grabbed a car and hurled it. Devin crossed his arms instinctively. The vehicle slammed into him, pinning him momentarily before he roared and shoved it aside. His strength had increased again.

His breathing slowed.

His movements became sharper.

He started watching patterns.

The Anomaly favored right-hand strikes. It lunged forward after heavy blows. Its speed dropped slightly after full-force attacks.

Devin's mind, half human, half predator, catalogued everything.

The creature charged again.

This time Devin sidestepped and hooked his arm under its elbow, redirecting the momentum. He slammed his shoulder into its side, driving it into a brick wall. The structure collapsed around them.

They rolled through dust and debris.

The Anomaly bit into Devin's shoulder. Teeth pierced fur and flesh. Devin howled, slamming his head forward into the creature's face repeatedly until it released him.

Blood dripped.

His.

And some of it… started clotting almost instantly.

His body refused to stop evolving.

The fight grew more brutal.

They tore through another building. A gas line ruptured, flames igniting briefly before both combatants moved away. The air filled with smoke and dust.

Devin's left leg snapped during a heavy stomp.

He fell to one knee.

The Anomaly rushed to finish him.

But his leg… adjusted.

Muscles tightened. Bone partially realigned. He forced himself upright with a savage roar. The pain only made his movements more violent.

His instincts sharpened.

His strikes grew more precise.

He ducked under a punch, grabbed the Anomaly's arm, and twisted using leverage instead of raw strength. He slammed his elbow into its throat area repeatedly.

The creature staggered.

Devin leapt, claws digging into its shoulders, and bit down on its neck. The Anomaly slammed backward into a truck, crushing both of them.

They separated again.

Both breathing heavily.

Both damaged.

But Devin… was changing faster.

POV SWITCH — SITES 38 MONITORING ROOM

Inside a high-tech observation chamber, analysts watched drone footage of the battle in real time.

Multiple screens displayed thermal imaging, motion prediction, and structural damage analysis.

A commander spoke quietly:

"Subject is adapting mid-combat. Strength increase estimated at thirty percent since initial contact."

Another analyst nodded.

"Reaction time improving as well. He's beginning to predict attack patterns."

"Durability?"

"Significantly higher than baseline lycanthropic anomaly."

The commander folded his arms.

"Conclusion?"

"He's evolving due to combat stress. Near-death adaptation mechanism."

A scientist zoomed in on Devin's skeletal overlay.

"Bone fractures stabilizing rapidly. Muscular density increasing."

Silence filled the room.

One technician finally said what everyone thought:

"If he survives this… containment difficulty will increase exponentially."

The commander nodded.

"Prepare contingency containment protocols. Non-lethal capture no longer prioritized."

They continued watching.

BACK TO THE BATTLE

Devin circled slowly now.

He wasn't just reacting anymore.

He was hunting.

The Anomaly lunged again, predictable now.

Devin ducked low, grabbed its leg, and twisted. The creature lost balance. Devin slammed his fist into its side repeatedly, each strike heavier than the last.

The Anomaly retaliated, smashing him across the face.

His jaw cracked.

He spat blood.

But he didn't fall.

Instead, he surged forward and tackled it. They rolled across the road, tearing up pavement. Devin pinned one arm and clawed at its torso, aiming for weak points he'd identified.

The creature roared and headbutted him.

Stars filled his vision.

Still, he held on.

He drove his claws deeper.

The SCP finally broke free and stumbled backward.

It was damaged now.

Slower.

Devin limped forward, one leg still partially broken.

He didn't hesitate.

He feinted left, then lunged right, slashing across its eyes. The creature recoiled blindly for a moment.

That moment decided everything.

Devin jumped onto its back, wrapped one arm around its neck, and drove his claws repeatedly into the same wound.

Again.

Again.

Again.

The Anomaly thrashed violently, slamming him into walls, cars, and the ground.

But Devin held on.

Finally, the creature collapsed.

Breathing shallow.

Barely moving.

Devin released it and staggered back.

He had won.

But he was in terrible condition.

Both arms injured.

Leg broken.

Ribs fractured.

Blood loss significant.

He turned and limped away, disappearing into the outskirts before any response team could arrive.

HOURS LATER — SECLUDED FARM

Night had fallen.

Devin stumbled across open farmland until he found an old barn. The structure leaned slightly, unused for years.

He pushed the door open and collapsed inside.

Hay covered the floor.

He dragged himself to a corner and leaned against the wall.

His breathing was shallow.

Hunger gnawed at him.

Pain pulsed through his entire body.

He tried to stay conscious.

Failed.

His eyes closed.

He fainted.

But inside…

His bloodline erupted.

This was his first true near-death experience.

His body recognized it as a threshold.

Cells mutated.

Muscle fibers thickened.

Bone density increased.

Healing accelerated.

A new stage activated.

STAGE 2 — COMBAT EVOLUTION TRIGGER

His body began rebuilding itself stronger than before.

The process was terrifyingly fast.

Bones reformed.

Muscles adapted.

Nervous system recalibrated.

Even unconscious, his transformation deepened.

Outside, the night remained silent.

Inside the barn, something far more dangerous was being born.
