Chapter 45 - Chapter XLV: Love...

The door opened slowly.

Kate stepped out.

For a second, she just stood there.

Then she moved.

"…move."

Ray turned his head slightly, already half under the blanket.

"…where?"

Kate didn't look at him.

"Just—move."

He shifted, dragging himself a bit to the side, giving her space without arguing this time.

The bed creaked.

Kate walked over, slower than usual.

Then sat down carefully.

A small pause.

Then she pulled the blanket up and slid in, keeping distance between them.

Neither of them looked at each other.

Ray stared at the ceiling.

Kate faced the other side.

The space between them stayed there.

Very intentional.

"So… we kissed?" he said out randomly.

A pause.

Kate didn't turn.

"…yeah."

Ray blinked at the ceiling.

"oh."

Another pause.

He shifted slightly.

"…was it bad?"

Kate's fingers tightened slightly on the blanket.

"…no."

Quiet.

Ray exhaled, almost relieved.

"…okay."

A small pause settled again.

Neither of them moved.

Then—

Ray glanced toward the small table.

"…you wanna watch something?"

Kate hesitated.

Just for a second.

"…fine."

Ray pushed himself up slightly, reaching for the laptop nearby, pulling it onto the bed.

The screen lit up, casting a soft glow across both of them.

Kate shifted just a little—

Not closer.

But not away either.

And as he put it on his lap… his hand brushed lightly against her waist.

Kate froze for a split second.

A small, sharp inhale.

Her body tensed—

Not pulling away.

But not relaxing either.

Ray noticed immediately.

"I'm sorry… I just…"

He pulled his hand back.

Kate didn't answer.

Her breath wasn't steady anymore.

She kept her eyes on the screen.

"…it's fine," she muttered quietly.

Ray nodded slightly.

"…okay."

The air between them felt different now.

Closer.

Warmer.

And then—

she moved.

Slipping her shirt off, tossing it aside without much thought.

"Relax… I have a bra on. It's summer. I usually sleep like this."

Ray froze for a second.

"…okay," he said quietly.

He didn't look.

Didn't trust himself to.

A pause lingered.

"…starting it?" he asked.

But instead—

he closed the laptop.

Kate blinked.

"…no?" she said softly.

He shook his head.

"No."

The light disappeared.

The room dimmed again.

Neither of them moved.

Then—

slowly—

he leaned in.

Their lips met.

Kate froze for a split second—

then didn't pull away.

Her eyes closed slowly.

Her fingers curled into the blanket.

The kiss stayed soft.

Careful.

Uncertain.

Ray didn't move closer at first.

Like he was waiting.

Like he wasn't sure if she'd stop him.

She didn't.

Her breathing changed.

Just enough to notice.

When they pulled back, their foreheads brushed.

"If we're doing this…"

She leaned in again briefly.

"…we start small."

Ray nodded.

"…okay."

His voice was quieter now.

Kate's hand moved slightly, gripping his shirt.

Holding onto him.

Not rushing.

Not forcing anything.

Just staying there.

The space between them stayed close—

but controlled.

"Now… relax," she whispered softly.

Ray hesitated for a second—

then let out a slow breath, closing his eyes.

Kate stayed still for a moment.

Then moved closer.

Careful.

Her touch was hesitant at first—

then steadier.

Ray's breath caught immediately.

"…your hands are cold," he muttered under his breath.

Kate paused slightly.

"…sorry."

Her movements adjusted, slower now.

More careful.

Ray's breathing shifted, uneven.

His fingers tightened slightly in the sheets.

"It's…" he started—

"Ssshh," she whispered.

He stopped talking.

Just let it happen.

The moment stretched.

Quiet.

Tense.

Kate's confidence grew slowly—

like she was figuring it out as she went.

Ray leaned into her slightly, his head resting near her shoulder.

Neither of them rushed.

Neither of them joked.

Just stayed in it.

Until—

his breathing broke.

His body tensed briefly—

then stilled.

Silence followed.

Kate didn't move right away.

Just stayed close.

Her forehead resting lightly against him.

Ray let out a quiet breath.

"…Kate…"

She didn't answer.

Just stayed there for a second longer—

then shifted slightly.

Their eyes met.

Neither of them spoke.

Ray reached for her.

Slower this time.

Careful.

Kate didn't move away.

Her breath hitched slightly.

For the first time—

she hesitated.

But didn't stop him.

His touch was different.

Less uncertain now.

Kate's hand moved to his shoulder, gripping lightly.

Her breathing changed again.

Uneven.

"Ray…" she whispered.

Not stopping him.

Just… saying his name.

He stayed close.

Careful.

Listening.

Her reactions guided him more than anything else.

The tension built again—

stronger this time.

Harder to control.

Kate tried—

failed—

let it happen anyway.

Her grip tightened.

Her breathing broke completely.

And then—

everything hit at once.

She stilled—

then collapsed back slightly, catching her breath.

Ray stopped immediately.

Watching her.

Trying to steady his own breathing.

The room went quiet again.

Just the sound of both of them trying to calm down.

Kate lay there for a second.

Eyes closed.

Then turned her head slightly toward him.

Their eyes met.

No words.

Ray moved closer.

Slowly.

Wrapped an arm around her.

Careful.

Kate let herself fall into him.

Tired.

Warm.

Their foreheads touched again—

Then he kissed her.

Soft.

No rush this time.

Kate kissed him back.

Quieter.

They stayed like that.

Close.

Not saying anything.
