Chapter 16 - Episode 16: The Night the System Arrived

The new location was supposed to be temporary.

But nothing ever feels temporary when you're scared.

Meera stood near the window of the new hideout.

Different building.

Different city outskirts.

Same silence.

Same fear.

Rani was unpacking quickly.

No settling.

Only preparing.

"We're being moved again in the morning," Rani said.

Meera nodded.

"I figured."

But neither of them believed movement meant safety anymore.

It just meant delay.

Outside, the street looked normal.

Too normal.

That was what made it dangerous.

A car passed slowly.

Then another.

Then stopped.

Meera noticed it instantly.

Rani noticed her reaction.

"What is it?"

Meera whispered:

"That same pattern…"

Before Rani could respond—

a loud knock hit the door.

Not soft.

Not polite.

Commanding.

Both froze.

Rani moved first.

Slowly toward the door.

Meera grabbed her wrist.

"No—"

Rani whispered:

"If we don't open it… they break it anyway."

Silence.

Then another knock.

Harder.

Rani opened the door slightly.

And everything changed.

Two men stood outside.

Plain clothes.

No uniforms.

No introduction.

But eyes that didn't belong to any normal visitor.

One of them said calmly:

"Meera Verma."

Meera stepped back instantly.

Rani moved in front of her.

The man continued:

"You are requested to come with us."

Meera's voice shook:

"Requested… by who?"

The second man answered:

"Legal authorities."

A pause.

"On grounds of unlawful relocation and investigation into your association network."

Rani's face tightened.

"This is not legal."

The first man didn't react.

He just said:

"You have 2 minutes."

Silence exploded inside the room.

Meera felt it immediately.

This was not negotiation.

This was extraction.

Rani turned quickly to Meera.

"Back exit."

But before they could move—

footsteps.

Behind the building.

Another entry blocked.

Meera's breath caught.

"They surrounded us…"

Rani grabbed her hand.

"No time—run!"

They moved.

Fast.

Through the back corridor.

Down narrow stairs.

Heartbeats louder than footsteps.

But outside—

more people.

Waiting.

Watching.

A trap.

Fully formed.

Meera stopped for a split second.

"This is it…"

Rani pulled her forward.

"No. Not here. Not like this."

They ran through a side alley.

Dark.

Wet.

Confusing.

But behind them…

voices.

Commands.

Flashlights.

"Stop!"

Meera stumbled.

Rani caught her again.

"You okay?" Rani asked breathlessly.

Meera nodded.

But she wasn't.

Not really.

They reached a dead end.

Wall.

No exit.

Silence hit them harder than running did.

Meera turned slowly.

"This is how it ends?"

Rani shook her head immediately.

"No."

A pause.

"Look at me."

Meera did.

Rani's voice softened but stayed firm:

"We are not ending here."

Footsteps got closer.

Meera whispered:

"I'm scared."

Rani replied instantly:

"So am I."

A pause.

"But I'm still here."

Silence.

Then Rani made a decision.

She stepped forward.

Not away.

Forward.

"Take me," Rani called out.

Meera froze.

"What are you doing?"

Rani didn't look back.

"If they want someone… let it be me first."

Meera's eyes widened.

"No—Rani!"

But it was too late.

Lights flooded the alley.

Voices shouted.

Hands moved in.

Meera screamed:

"STOP!"

She ran forward—

but was pulled back instantly.

Rani turned just once.

Looked at her.

Not fear.

Not regret.

Only calm love.

"It's okay," she whispered.

Meera shook her head violently.

"It's NOT okay!"

Rani smiled faintly.

"Find me."

And then—

she was taken.

The alley emptied in seconds.

Meera stood there shaking.

Empty hands.

Empty breath.

Empty world.

For the first time…

she wasn't running.

She was alone.

And everything inside her broke quietly.
