Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: Karma's a Bitch

Krul walked along the path toward the Special Reserve Living Quarters. The Vampire patrols she encountered on the way would all stop and salute her.

Krul was long accustomed to this.

However, for some reason today, whenever she saw a patrol, Krul couldn't help but recall the scene from a year and a half ago when she listened to a patrol report with the words 'I'm Super Fierce!' plastered on her face.

Thinking of this, Krul clenched her fist tightly.

"Hehe, you little human brat, let's see you run now. I have all the time in the world to deal with you!"

Before she knew it, Krul had reached her destination.

This area was designated for housing the Special Reserve Blood Sources.

Although the interiors were much better than the houses where other captured children were about to be placed, from the outside, this area looked no different from a prison.

Gloomy. Oppressive.

The Special Reserve Blood Sources imprisoned here would most likely develop depression.

But what did the Vampires know about such things? They only believed that good living conditions and good food would improve the quality of the blood.

They gave no consideration whatsoever to the psychological state of the special reserves.

This was also why the special reserves were replaced so quickly and their quality kept declining.

The Vampire guard saluted Krul.

"Lady Krul!"

Krul asked directly.

"Which room is the person Kyle locked up in?"

"Please follow me, Lady Krul."

Krul followed behind the guard.

The guard stopped in front of a black door.

"He's inside here."

"Open it."

"Yes, Lady Krul!"

As soon as the door opened, a loud shout came from within.

"You damn bastard, Sugou! Grandpa Kirito, you..."

Probably noticing the door had opened, the voice abruptly stopped.

Ignoring Luke's shout, Krul walked straight in.

"Don't let anyone else in."

"Yes!"

That Vampire returned to the entrance.

Krul entered the room, a fake smile on her face.

"Seems you're quite energetic."

"Your Highness Krul!"

Luke had already put his book away before Krul entered. Seeing it was Krul, he practically launched himself off the bed and stood up.

Ignoring Luke's greeting, Krul began her psychological manipulation.

"Listen well, human brat. If you want to stay alive, you'll obey me. Don't think about escaping. You won't be that lucky every time."

Luke nodded repeatedly.

"Mhm, mhm, mhm! I'll follow your lead without question."

Krul shot him a disdainful look.

Do you think I believe that?

"From now on, you are my Special Reserve Blood Source. Only I can drink your blood. Since your blood is somewhat special, I might only drink from you every few days. Your task is to maintain your physical health."

Luke did not argue.

He was already caught in Krul's grasp, what else could he do? This demand wasn't hard to guess.

Krul continued.

"Don't try any tricks with me. The human world outside has already met its end. Only here can you be offered protection. To put it bluntly, you are merely livestock we raise."

Luke remained silent, thinking to himself: Hah, livestock? Just wait until I stand up again!

Seeing that Krul seemed to have finished, Luke immediately voiced a request.

"Um... Your Highness Krul, could I possibly be moved to a different place to live?"

Krul didn't even think about it, flatly refusing.

"No. As my Special Reserve Blood Source, the conditions here are the best among humans. Your meals won't be nutrient paste, but normal human food. What more could you be dissatisfied with?"

Luke scratched his head.

"It's too oppressive here..."

Krul tilted her head in confusion, then surveyed the surroundings again.

"Oppressive? Is it?"

As a Vampire who had lived underground for thousands of years, how could Krul understand the despair humans felt in enclosed spaces?

Afraid Krul would misunderstand that he was trying to scheme, Luke patiently explained.

"You might not think it's a problem, but we humans can't stand staying in a place like this for long periods, unable to move around freely. I, this special reserve, am worse off than the other humans. Just assign me to living quarters on par with theirs, hehe... and give me human food... Don't worry! I absolutely won't run!"

Luke felt he was being a bit demanding, wanting everything, and his tone became somewhat awkward by the end.

Krul stroked her chin, as if weighing the options.

After all, Luke had a precedent of successfully escaping, so she had to be cautious.

Seeing Krul still hesitating, Luke spoke up again.

"Sigh, if I have to live here, I'll be unhappy. If I'm unhappy, my health will deteriorate. If my health deteriorates, my blood won't taste good. If my blood doesn't taste good, you..."

"Enough!"

Krul interrupted Luke, demanding.

"Are you threatening me?"

Luke hastily waved his hands, claiming he wouldn't dare.

After some consideration, Krul nodded.

"I can agree to your request, not letting you live here. But in the ordinary zones, Lower-ranking Vampires might sneak a bite at any time. As my special reserve, it's unacceptable for you to be nibbled on by other Vampires, so I can't have you stay there."

Luke touched his neck, the scene of asuramaru drinking from him still vivid in his mind.

A ghost... probably doesn't count, right?

Krul thought of a solution.

"There are quite a few rooms in my palace. You can live there. But you cannot move about freely when I'm not present. Your constitution is special, making you an easy target for the covetous eyes of other Vampire Nobles, even the Progenitors."

At this point, Krul let out a derisive laugh.

"Heh, after all, I'm not exactly beloved by everyone in this Vampire City."

Hear that, Ferid? That's a pointed remark for you!

Luke nodded with pleasant surprise.

Great, this is great! This way, I can see Her Highness Krul every day!

"We'll arrange this tomorrow. For today, you'll still stay here."

Having said that, Krul turned to leave.

At that moment, Luke spoke up again.

"Your Highness Krul, um, may I ask... where is my sword?"

asuramaru, I will save you!

Without turning around, Krul replied calmly.

"Didn't pick it up. It's probably still in Shibuya, likely picked up by those Sorcerer by now."

Luke stood there dumbfounded.

Huh?!

What the hell, so it's just meant to be picked up by Yuichiro when he gets out? Ugh, my heart aches!

Krul reached the doorway, seemed to remember something, and turned back.

Luke was somewhat puzzled.

"Your Highness Krul, is there something else?"

Krul grinned mischievously.

"Do you have a pen on you?"

Sanguinem didn't have such things; she had to ask Luke for one.

Luke immediately understood what Krul wanted to do.

Luke backed up a few steps, covering his handsome face.

"N... no."

Krul's smile widened even more.

"Hehe, seems you know what I want to do. If there's no pen, it looks like I'll have to use your blood then."

"No, no, no! I have one! I have one!"

Krul left the Special Reserve Blood Source area, seeming to be in a good mood.

Inside the room, Luke curled up on the floor clutching his stomach, muttering.

"This is domestic abuse, what the hell, it hurts so much, you hit really hard!"

This was because Krul had punched him in the stomach for lying.

Luke struggled to his feet and went to the bathroom, filling the sink with water.

Looking into the water, Luke's face instantly darkened.

Because what Krul had written on his face was—I'm Super Cute!

"You... I... this..."

Luke lay on the bed feeling utterly hopeless, staring at the ceiling.

"Damn it, karma really is a bitch. And she won't let me wash it off! The more I think about it, the angrier I get! I'm going to sleep!"
