Chapter 20 - The risk of falling again

The air felt different.

Not lighter.

Not heavier.

Just… uncertain.

Like everything depended on one wrong move.

Amara walked beside Kieran in silence.

Not awkward.

Not comfortable.

Just real.

"I don't expect you to trust me immediately," he said after a while.

"Good," she replied.

"Because I don't."

He nodded.

"That's fair."

They kept walking.

Slow.

Careful.

Like two people learning each other all over again.

"What about him?" Kieran asked suddenly.

Amara didn't need clarification.

"Daniel?"

"Yeah."

She exhaled softly.

"He's… good."

That word again.

Kieran looked ahead.

"I figured."

"But he's not you," she added.

That made him look at her.

"And that's not necessarily a good thing," she said quickly.

A small smile appeared on his lips.

"I'll take that."

Silence again.

But this time…

It felt softer.

Later that day, Daniel approached her.

"Hey," he said.

"Hey."

"You've been distant," he noticed.

Amara sighed quietly.

"I'm sorry."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Is it him?"

She didn't pretend.

"Yes."

That honesty hurt.

But it was necessary.

"I thought so," he said.

There was no anger.

No bitterness.

Just understanding.

And somehow…

That made it harder.

"You deserve someone who's sure," Daniel said.

Amara looked at him.

"And right now… that's not me."

She felt a small ache in her chest.

"I'm sorry."

He smiled slightly.

"Don't be. Just… be sure next time."

And with that—

He stepped back.

Letting her go.

That moment stayed with her.

Because Daniel wasn't wrong.

This wasn't just about feelings anymore.

It was about certainty.

That evening, she found Kieran again.

Not because she had to.

But because she wanted to.

"I talked to him," she said.

Kieran nodded slowly.

"And?"

"It's done."

Something shifted in his expression.

Not victory.

Relief.

But he didn't celebrate.

Didn't assume.

He just looked at her.

"Are you sure?" he asked.

That question mattered.

Because this time…

He needed it to be real.

Amara stepped closer.

"I'm not choosing you because it's easy," she said.

"I'm choosing you because despite everything…"

She took a breath.

"…it's still you."

Silence.

Deep.

Powerful.

And then—

For the first time since he came back—

Kieran smiled.

Not the confident one.

Not the careless one.

But a real one.

And in that moment…

Amara knew something.

This wasn't the same story anymore.

This wasn't about falling blindly.

This was about choosing.

Carefully.

Bravely.

Even if it meant risking everything again.
