The school year had finally given William a short vacation, and Ethan had not wasted the chance. After asking William's parents for permission and receiving their full agreement, Ethan planned a quiet trip for the two of them. The past few months had been a real rollercoaster — wins on the football field, slow changes in the team, quiet nights of comfort, and more than one hard moment that left them both tired. They needed time away from everything. Time to breathe. Time to just be together.
Ethan drove them along the coastal road with the windows half open. Warm air and the smell of salt water filled the car. William sat in the passenger seat, watching the trees and the blue water flash past. Every now and then he looked at Ethan and smiled, as if he still could not believe they were really doing this.
"I've never been to a place like this," William said softly. "It already feels different."
