Chapter 75 - Chapter 75: What Cannot Be Taught

Kael didn't leave immediately after stepping out of the adaptive chamber, and as the quiet hum of structured mana settled back into its dormant state behind him, his gaze lingered on the doorway for a moment longer than necessary, not because he was tired, but because something in that space had made a point he couldn't ignore, a kind of pressure that didn't overwhelm but exposed, and as that understanding settled, footsteps approached from behind without urgency.

"You're still thinking."

Lyra's voice carried calmly into the hall.

Kael turned slightly.

"You followed."

Lyra stopped a few steps away, her expression composed as always, her eyes briefly scanning the upper section before returning to him. "You didn't say you were coming back down."

Aren's voice came from further behind, louder, less subtle. "…And obviously we weren't just going to let you disappear into some restricted area without checking."

Draven walked beside him, silent as usual, but his presence steady, his gaze already assessing the surroundings.

Kael didn't question it.

Because he expected it.

"…It's different here," Kael said.

Aren crossed his arms. "…Yeah, no kidding. This place feels like it judges you just for standing in it."

Lyra glanced toward one of the sealed chambers. "…Because it does."

Draven stepped forward slightly. "…You tried it."

Kael nodded.

"Yes."

Aren tilted his head. "…And?"

Kael didn't answer immediately.

Not because he didn't know—

But because the answer wasn't simple.

"…It doesn't let you fight the way you want," he said finally.

Lyra understood first.

"…It forces consistency."

Kael nodded.

Aren frowned. "…I don't like the sound of that."

Draven's voice came low. "…Because you rely on bursts."

Aren shot him a look. "…And you don't?"

Draven didn't react. "…Not anymore."

A brief silence followed before Kael spoke again.

"…It's not about winning in there."

Lyra looked at him. "…Then what?"

Kael's gaze shifted back toward the chamber.

"…It removes everything that doesn't work."

Aren exhaled slowly. "…That sounds… annoying."

Lyra shook her head slightly. "…No. That sounds necessary."

Kael stepped forward again.

"…Try it."

Aren blinked. "…Wait, me?"

Kael didn't look back.

"Yes."

Aren hesitated for a second, then sighed.

"…Fine. But if this thing breaks my arms, I'm blaming you."

He stepped into the chamber.

The moment he crossed—

The room activated.

The same structured light formed beneath his feet, the air compressing slightly as mana density adjusted, the environment responding instantly.

"…Okay yeah, I hate this already," Aren muttered.

The figure formed.

Then moved.

Aren reacted immediately, his blade swinging in a wide arc, fast and aggressive, his natural style clear from the first motion.

The clash came hard.

Loud.

But—

Unstable.

The figure didn't match his force.

It bypassed it.

Aren's strike met resistance—but not where he expected.

The counter came immediately.

Sharp.

Direct.

Aren stepped back.

"…Wait—what?"

He adjusted, attacking again, faster this time, his movements pushing forward, trying to overwhelm the pattern.

But the figure didn't break.

Didn't slow.

Every time Aren overextended—

It corrected.

Every time he pushed too far—

It responded.

Within seconds—

His rhythm collapsed.

The blade stopped at his chest.

The room went still.

Aren stood there for a moment.

Then exhaled sharply.

"…Yeah, I hate it."

He stepped out, shaking his arm slightly.

"…That thing is annoying."

Lyra stepped forward next.

"…Let me."

She entered.

The room responded again.

This time—

Differently.

The environment adjusted to her.

The figure formed.

Lyra didn't rush.

Her mana gathered quietly, structured, controlled, her stance stable as she observed the movement first.

The figure moved.

Lyra responded.

Not aggressively.

Precisely.

Her magic formed in layers, small controlled constructs rather than wide output, each action measured, each adjustment deliberate.

The clash wasn't loud.

But it was tight.

Clean.

The figure pressed.

Lyra adapted.

But—

Even she—

Faltered.

Not in control.

In timing.

Her second sequence came just slightly delayed.

The figure entered that gap.

The result—

The same.

She stepped back as the chamber deactivated.

"…It punishes delay," she said quietly.

Kael nodded.

"Yes."

Draven stepped forward.

No words.

He entered.

The room activated.

The figure moved.

Draven moved.

His style—

Efficient.

Direct.

No wasted motion.

The clash came.

Sharp.

Clean.

And for a moment—

It held.

Longer than the others.

But even then—

A small misalignment.

A slight shift.

The figure entered.

The blade stopped.

Draven stepped out.

"…Consistent," he said.

Aren snorted. "…You lasted longer than me. That's not fair."

Draven ignored him.

Kael stepped forward again.

"…Now you understand."

Aren rubbed the back of his neck. "…Yeah. It exposes everything."

Lyra nodded. "…Every weakness."

Kael looked at them.

"…Good."

Aren raised an eyebrow. "…Good?"

Kael's gaze sharpened slightly.

"…Because now we know what to fix."

Silence followed.

Then—

Aren smirked faintly.

"…Alright. I'm in."

Lyra crossed her arms.

"…We use this."

Draven nodded once.

"…Agreed."

Kael turned back toward the chamber.

Not as someone testing something new.

But as someone who had found—

A tool.

And more importantly—

A mirror.

Because what couldn't be taught—

Could still be revealed.

And now—

They had a place that showed it.

Without hesitation.

Without mercy.

Without error.

Kael stepped forward.

Again.

This time—

Not to see what would happen.

But to remove what shouldn't.
