Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: An Unexpected Opportunity

Life at the factory continued, albeit with its ups and downs. Everyone complained about the reduced overtime pay, yet still diligently completed their tasks. I was no exception, still busy between the warehouse and the workshop every day, but with a growing sense of uncertainty about the future.

That afternoon, sunlight streamed through the workshop windows, casting bright patches of light on the floor. I was about to go to the warehouse to move a newly arrived batch of fabric when I suddenly heard the boss speaking loudly in his office, his tone filled with anxiety. Out of curiosity, I slowed my pace and vaguely overheard that it was about an important order. The client requested that some intricate embroidery techniques be added to the existing design, but no one in the factory was skilled in this craft, which was causing the boss great distress.

A thought struck me. I suddenly remembered an elderly woman in the next village back in my hometown in Vietnam who was a master embroiderer. I often watched her needle fly as a child, and although I had never embroidered myself, I knew a little about the stitches and techniques. After a moment's hesitation, I mustered my courage and went into the boss's office.

"Boss, I… I might be able to help," I said nervously.

The boss looked up, surprised. "You? Qiang, this is no joke. This order is very important; if we mess it up, we'll suffer huge losses."

"I know, boss. Back in my hometown, I've seen others embroider this pattern, and I remember the general stitching. Please give me a chance to try. If it doesn't work, I'm willing to accept any punishment," I explained eagerly, my eyes full of sincerity.

The boss stared at me for a while, seemingly weighing the pros and cons. Finally, he gritted his teeth and said, "Alright, Qiang, I trust you this time. Go get some scrap fabric and embroider a sample according to the customer's requirements. Give it to me first thing tomorrow morning. If it works, you'll be in charge, and I'll give you a generous bonus."

I nodded quickly, turned around to get the fabric and needle and thread, and found a quiet corner to sit down. I racked my brains, trying to recall the old woman's embroidery techniques, and carefully began to stitch, one stitch at a time. Time slipped away quietly in my focused concentration. Everyone else in the workshop was busy with their own work, and no one noticed me in the corner.

As the last rays of the setting sun streamed through the window and fell upon me, the first sample was finally finished. Looking at the fabric embroidered with the exquisite pattern in my hands, although my stitches were still a bit rusty, it generally met the customer's requirements. I breathed a sigh of relief, feeling both the joy of completing the task and a little apprehensive, wondering if the boss would be satisfied.

The next morning, with a nervous heart, I handed the sample to the boss. The boss took the sample, examined it carefully, and his expression gradually changed from serious to pleasantly surprised. "Ah Qiang, I didn't expect you to actually have this skill! Okay, you're in charge of the embroidery portion of this order. Go and recruit a few workers who know embroidery, and get this work done as soon as possible."

I was so excited I almost jumped for joy. "Yes, boss, I'll definitely do it!"

Over the next few days, I posted job advertisements near the factory and inquired everywhere for people who knew embroidery. I actually found a few skillful women who had done embroidery in their hometowns and were very skilled. Under my guidance, everyone quickly got to work.

As the embroidery work progressed smoothly, the order's schedule gradually caught up. The customer was very satisfied after seeing the samples and placed additional orders. The boss was overjoyed, not only fulfilling his promise of a bonus but also promoting me to assistant workshop supervisor, responsible for coordinating the embroidery process with other steps.

This sudden opportunity brought about a huge change in my life. I went from being a simple manual laborer to participating in the factory's core operations, not only increasing my income but also learning more management knowledge and business skills. Looking at everyone's busy yet orderly figures in the workshop, I knew that I had seized this opportunity to change my destiny, and the future seemed to be getting brighter.
