Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Life's Ups and Downs

Days continued to flow in the orderly rhythm of the factory. After my salary rose to 1000 yuan, I sent 700 yuan home every month without fail. Each time I went to the post office to send money, watching the staff count and register the banknotes, imagining my mother and sister's expressions upon receiving the money, my heart was filled with warmth and strength.

However, life wasn't always smooth sailing. One day, a sudden argument erupted in the workshop. I put down the fabric I was carrying and looked in the direction of the sound. I saw Old Wang and Xiao Li, who usually got along well, arguing heatedly. It turned out that the two had disagreed on work assignments. Old Wang felt that Xiao Li always picked the easy tasks and left the heavy ones to others. Xiao Li, on the other hand, felt that Old Wang was deliberately targeting him. Neither would give in, and their voices grew louder and louder.

Other coworkers gathered around, trying to mediate. I quickly squeezed in and said in broken Chinese, "We're all coworkers, stop arguing, let's talk this out." But the two were both furious and wouldn't listen. The argument escalated into shoving, and Old Wang stumbled, bumping into a pile of fabric, several large bundles crashing to the ground.

This scene was witnessed by the boss, who was inspecting the workshop. His face instantly darkened, and he shouted, "What are you doing? If you don't want to work, get out! This commotion has delayed so much of the work!" Old Wang and Xiao Li both lowered their heads, not daring to utter a sound. The boss turned to me, "Qiang, go and organize these fabrics. Everyone else, go back to work!"

I hurriedly started organizing the fabric, feeling somewhat helpless. The previously harmonious atmosphere was shattered by this sudden argument, and everyone felt a little awkward. After this incident, the atmosphere in the workshop became somewhat oppressive, and the usual laughter and chatter diminished considerably.

One problem after another. Not long after, large-scale infrastructure construction began near the factory, with machines roaring and dust flying everywhere. Vehicles transporting building materials constantly traveled around the factory area, frequently blocking the roads. This not only caused considerable inconvenience to our lives but also affected the factory's cargo transportation. Raw materials that were usually on time were often late, impacting production schedules and forcing workers to work overtime to catch up, leading to increasing complaints.

Worse still, the vibrations from construction caused some of the factory's machinery to malfunction. Maintenance workers were extremely busy, but many orders were still delayed due to machine problems. The boss was overwhelmed and held frequent meetings to discuss solutions.

One day, the boss announced at a meeting that due to the numerous difficulties the factory was facing recently, in order to maintain operations, he had to temporarily reduce the workers' overtime pay. This news was like a bombshell, causing a huge uproar among the workers. Everyone expressed their dissatisfaction, feeling that they were already working very hard, and now their overtime pay was being reduced, significantly decreasing their income.

I also felt somewhat disappointed, but considering the factory's current situation, I felt that the boss had no other choice. After the meeting, I found Amin and said, "Amin, I know everyone's unhappy, but the factory is really facing difficulties right now. Let's try to be more understanding." Amin sighed and said, "That makes sense, but life's suddenly much tighter." Despite feeling down, everyone continued to stay at their posts. After all, having a job in this unfamiliar place is already difficult enough. I secretly told myself to work even harder to help the factory overcome its difficulties, and I believed everything would get better. However, I had no idea what the future held. I could only take it one step at a time, silently hoping that life would turn around again.
