Chapter 9 - Monster Raid: The Beginning

On the way to the battlefield, I'm so nervous because this is my first battle. The night's covering the world, making this raid difficult. I can hear the trees rustling in the wind, birds whistling, and the weather is getting colder.

As I'm waking like everybody else, I look at the sword I grip tight in my right hand; many thoughts come to me.

Sword... But I don't know how to use a sword...

I sigh as my thoughts conclude.

...I wish I could run away...

While we are heading toward the forest full of monsters, there are still many people whispering to each other about the earlier moment of me joining them to fight. Some of them think for sure that I will die; some think I will pull them back while they are fighting.

Even though they are whispering, I can still hear all of those whispers. I feel kinda sad as I have no one to trust and lean on in this world.

Is this how the military always feels when they first go into battle?

I thought and chuckled on my own with that stupid question.

"...At least they still have family waiting for them..."

I said it unconsciously, without realizing it.

The King, who was on the horse, was watching me quietly.

What a special kid...

Most children his age would be with their families right now.

Or perhaps... he has no family at all.

Poor child...

I can feel someone is staring at me right now, so I glance that way, and also the way where the King is watching me, but I don't see anyone staring at me because the King already turned his head away.

Alice, who is in front of the walking party, glances back at me. It seems like she is worrying to me.

"What's wrong, Alice? Is everything okay?"

Seraphine said, looking worries of Alice expression in her face.

Seraphine's voice making Alice slightly jumps of surprised.

"I-I'm fine... Just worrying for someone..."

She said, finally stopping and glancing at me.

"Ohh~ Who is the lucky guy that my angel is worrying for his safety~?"

Seraphine said, teasing Alice to help ease the tension.

"N-no! It's not like what you mean..."

She said, her face slightly red. She turned her head away to hide her red face.

"Pl-please stop, we have the fight waiting for us ahead..."

She said, covering her face with her hands.

I, who was walking behind with the King, somehow heard all their whispers with my super good hearing. But Ignore their conversation and continued to focus on the future raid.

{Forest}

Almost half an hour later, we reached deep inside the forest, also known as the place I saw in the future sight.

This is the place where I died in the future hallucination...

***

An hour has passed; everyone is in their position. The King and I are standing behind everyone for protection. My job is watching everyone fighting for experiments and protecting the King.

While staring, the King recalls back before the plan.

{Forest}

I stood watching people at their positions with confusion.

I glanced at the King and asked.

"What are they doing, y-your Majesty?"

I said, stammering when I tried to call the King "Your Majesty".

"They are making a formation."

He said, proudly of his people.

"Right now, they are making a balanced defense formation."

I looked at them while listening to the King.

Right now, I saw that people were placing adventurers and knights who use shields as their main weapon, known as tanks, in the front line.

With the people who mainly use weapons like swords, spears, and other weapons behind them.

Behind them are mages, who use magic as a support role. People with bows, archers, also climb on trees as a support role.

I did look amaze of their plan and formation at first, but somehow my mind denied something with a better idea.

"Oh, um... Your Majesty? May I have a request?"

I turned to the King, with hopeful eyes, maybe fake hopeful eyes.

"Yes, do you have an idea in mind?"

He said, with a pleasure to help me.

I came near him, leaned my head near his head, and whispered. The King also leaned a little to hear me.

***

While people were getting to their positions, Kael, who is the person leading people in this raid fight right now, got called by the King.

"Draven, please come here"

The King said, a little loud to get Kael's attention.

"Yes, Your Majesty?"

He answered him immediately, kneeling to show him respect.

"I think... We will change the formation plan."

He said, determined.

After his words, everyone, including me shocked and looked at him, wondering why he wanted to change the formation suddenly.

"Y-Your Majesty? May I ask your reason why you suddenly changed the plan?"

I asked with curiosity.

"Haha... Because someone came up with a better plan than the one we were using."

He said, with hidden, meaningful eyes to me.

The King's gaze remained fixed on the battlefield as the memory slowly faded from his mind.

...That was the moment everything changed...

He thought.

When he finally came back to the present, he smiled as he watched me as a role to protect him from danger.

What a young guardian...

***

When the time comes, I feel the ground suddenly rumble.

My eyes widen as I can see a large number of monsters coming.

"W-what the— It might be over a hundred of them!"

I mumble to myself, surprised and terrified.

There are goblins, monsters I saw in the future sight, charging at first.

I look half scared and excited at those monsters, because it a first time I've seen a real fight between humans and monsters, and the monsters' real look. Based on those fantasy novels I have read and the future I have seen, those monsters are like in the description in the fantasy novel I read. Goblins have green skin and an ugly face with long pointing ears.

As I think about the Goblins' look, a system appears in front of me.

—— Info ——

Monster: Goblins

Rank: F

Type: Goblins

When everyone sees those monsters, they immediately do as their plan. Many people whom using a giant iron shield that almost covers their whole body stand in the front, carefully protecting everyone behind them.

The goblins that were charging toward those guys, they suddenly started slowing down. They angrily look down and notice there is mud under them. Many of them are now slowly sinking into the mud.

The plan's working!

I thought, happy about the plan.

Nice, using the tanks as bait to lure the goblins into the trap.

A suspicious thought suddenly flashed through my mind.

Wait! In novels, most goblins are smart; there is no way they will get trapped in that mud so easily.

People out there, when they are trying to do the next step of the plan, suddenly widen their eyes.

There is something wrong...

As I'm thinking about the goblins, notice that the King's horse takes a step back, so I look up. As soon as I look up, my eyes widen.

"A-an orc?!"

I said with surprised.

A giant figure appears in front of us, and it's an orc. Orcs are strong monsters. Orcs do have some similar look like goblins, like green skin and pointed ears, but shorter. The difference is that orcs are a crazy size and have two big, long teeth on their lower jaw.

—— Info ——

Monster: Orc

Rank: D

Type: Orc

—————

I stop myself as I see the system.

D rank?!

I take a step back.

Could it be... This orc uses goblins?!

A voice comes out of nowhere to help people stay calm.

"Everyone, stay in your position. It's just an Orc."

That voice came from Arthur, trying to help everyone to stay calm in this situation.

But as he finished his words, more giant figures came. Four more orcs are coming to us.

My hand that is holding a sword is shaking as I'm seeing that.

"F-five orcs?!"

I said, can't able stay calm anymore.

Everyone right now also has the same reaction as me. But they recovered quickly and prepared for a battle.

As everybody was ready to do as planned, a system appeared in front of me.

[You've officially entered the main story]

"W-what?!"

I said it in a frightened tone.
