Three genin stood waiting in the training yard near the Academy,
Shinji approached his presence, settling over the space before he even spoke. He stopped a few steps in front of them, his gaze moving from one to the next, taking them in fully. "You're my team."
"Follow me."
The path shifted as they walked. From open village streets to quieter districts to something more contained. The Uchiha compound.
People didn't stop what they were doing but they noticed. The presence of three outsiders walking behind Shinji didn't go unseen.
He led them to a training ground within the compound and stopped.
"This is where we'll begin."
Kenta raised a brow. "With all the training grounds in the village you picked this one?"
Shinji stepped forward slightly.
"Answer it," he said. "Why here?"
Aiko spoke first.
"Political positioning," she said. "You're showing the clan that we're not outsiders."
Kenta snorted. "Or he just likes it here."
The Sarutobi stepped in.
"It's controlled," he said. "No interruptions. No outside variables."
Shinji listened. Then nodded once. "All of that is true." "You're not just a team," he continued. "You're a connection."
His gaze sharpened slightly. "Between clans. Between the village."
Then
"Introductions" Shinji stood at the front, arms relaxed at his sides. "You first."
The Sarutobi stepped forward "Daiki Sarutobi. Age: twelve. Rank: Genin." "Likes: training, especially Fire Release. I like improving and getting stronger every day."
"Dislikes: wasting time. And people who don't take missions seriously."
He glanced at Kenta.
"Hobbies: sparring, studying jutsu, and shogi."
Shinji's eyebrow twitched slightly at that.
"Goals."
"To become strong enough to protect the village. And to live up to the Sarutobi name."
Shinji gave a small nod.
"Next."
Aiko stepped forward.
"Aiko Yamanaka. Age: twelve. Rank: Genin."
"Likes: strategy, analysis, and teamwork when it's done properly."
"Dislikes: unpredictability. Sloppiness. And people who act before thinking."
"Hobbies: studying the mind, meditation, and sensory training."
"Goals."
"To become the best sensory kunoichi in the village. And to make sure my team survives every mission."
Shinji held her gaze for a moment. Then nodded.
"Last."
Kenta stepped forward with a grin, hands in his pockets.
"Kenta Inuzuka. Age: twelve. Rank: Genin." Raik barked beside him.
"This is Raik, he's smarter than he looks." The ninken huffed.
"Likes: fighting, running, eating pretty much in that order."
Aiko sighed quietly.
"Dislikes: sitting still, overthinking, and long explanations."
"Hobbies: training with Raik, tracking, and racing anyone who thinks they're fast." He grinned wider.
"Goals?"
He shrugged. "Get strong. Go on crazy missions. And never lose."
Shinji's attention lingered on him for a second longer.
Then "Good."
Then Shinji stepped forward. "Shinji Uchiha."
"Age: fifteen. Rank: Jonin."
"Likes: Training. Spending time with my family. My teammates."
A brief pause.
"Teaching."
"Dislikes: Traitors. Old traditions that hold people back."
"And meaningless wars."
"Hobbies."
"Training."
"And shogi."
Kenta blinked. "Shogi?"
Aiko tilted her head slightly.
Shinji nodded. "My jonin sensei taught me." His gaze drifted slightly for a moment. "Not just the game." "The thinking behind it. Positioning. Sacrifice. Patience."
He looked back at them. "Lessons that matter in battle."
"I plan to do the same with you."
Then Shinji's expression sharpened "From this point forward, your growth is my responsibility."
"And your failures." His eyes moved between them. "Are something I'll correct."
Kenta smirked. "So if we mess up"
"It depends why," Shinji cut in calmly.
Kenta blinked.
"If you fail because you weren't taught properly, that's on me."
"If you fail because you didn't listen"
His gaze sharpened just slightly. "That's on you."
Kenta grinned again. "Fair enough."
Shinji let them sit for a moment longer.
Then
Three small bells appeared in his hand.
"Your objective," Shinji said, holding them up, "is to take these from me."
Aiko's eyes narrowed.
Daiki leaned forward slightly.
Kenta's grin widened.
"You have until sunset," Shinji continued.
"Or you fail."
Silence.
"You can use anything," he added. "Weapons. Strategy. Traps."
His gaze sharpened again.
"But if you don't get a bell"
"You go back to the Academy."
Kenta's grin faded. Aiko's mind was already racing. Daiki's stance shifted.
Shinji watched them process it.
Then
"One more thing."
"This test isn't about strength."
"Begin."
Shinji vanished.
The three of them stood still for half a second. Then moved. Daiki stepped back, scanning. Aiko closed her eyes briefly, reaching out. Kenta dropped low, Raik already tracking.
"Three bells," Kenta said. "Three of us."
"too simple," Aiko replied.
Daiki nodded. "It's not about the bells." "It's about us."
From the trees above Shinji watched.
Daiki moved first, stepping lightly across the training ground, eyes scanning every angle. His breathing stayed steady, controlled.
Aiko stood still for a moment longer, eyes closed, reaching outward.
Kenta crouched low beside Raik, fingers brushing the ground.
"He's close," Aiko said quietly.
Kenta smirked. "Yeah? Then let's jump him."
Daiki shook his head. "No. He wants that."
Kenta clicked his tongue. "He wants a lot of things."
Aiko opened her eyes.
"Three bells," she said again. "Three of us."
"But he emphasized thinking," Daiki added.
Kenta grinned. "So we outthink him by taking them faster."
Neither of them responded.
From the trees above, Shinji watched. They were circling the problem. Not solving it.
Kenta moved first anyway. "Raik, track."
The ninken barked once and darted forward, nose low, weaving through the trees.
Kenta followed immediately, fast, aggressive.
Daiki exhaled. "There he goes."
Aiko didn't look away from where Raik disappeared.
"Let him."
A second later
Impact.
Kenta burst into a clearing, claws extended
Shinji stood there, exactly where Raik led him..
"Fast," Shinji said calmly.
Kenta lunged anyway.
No hesitation. No plan.
Shinji shifted slightly, Kenta's strike passed by him.
A light tap to the shoulder sent him off balance, tumbling past.
Raik snapped forward, aiming for Shinji's leg Shinji stepped over him cleanly.
Kenta rolled back to his feet, grinning despite it. "Alright. You're fast."
Kenta attacked again.
This time Shinji didn't just evade, he redirected. A quick shift of weight, a slight turn Kenta's momentum worked against him. He hit the ground harder this time.
Shinji stepped back. "You rely on instinct," he said.
Kenta pushed himself up. "Yeah. It works."
Before he could respond
Fire.
A controlled stream cut through the clearing.
Shinji moved, stepping aside as the flames passed.
Daiki landed on the opposite side, hands already forming signs.
"Don't rush in alone," he said.
Kenta smirked. "You got a better idea?"
Aiko stepped out from the trees behind them.
"Yes."
Shinji's eyes flicked between them.
Aiko's gaze sharpened.
"Now."
Daiki moved first, fire forcing space.
Kenta followed, this time waiting half a second then striking when Shinji shifted.
Shinji slipped through the pressure, stepping just outside their range.
Aiko didn't move. Her hands formed a seal.
Shinji's eyes flicked to her.
That was the opening.
Kenta and Daiki attacked together.
Shinji shifted and for just a moment he committed. That was when Aiko moved Her technique surged forward
Shinji broke it at the last second, stepping back just far enough.
They regrouped. Breathing slightly heavier now.
"That almost worked," Kenta said.
Aiko nodded slightly.
Daiki's eyes stayed on Shinji.
"We're close."
From above, the sun had shifted. Time passed. Attempts continued. Each one better than the last.
Shinji didn't overwhelm them. He let them try.
Until finally they stopped.
Aiko spoke first. "We've been looking at it wrong."
Kenta frowned. "We literally almost got him."
"Almost," she said.
Daiki exhaled slowly.
"Three bells," he said.
"Or three people trying to get one each."
Kenta blinked. Then smirked slowly.
"Oh."
Aiko nodded.
"We don't need three winners."
Daiki looked at them both.
Then back at Shinji.
"We need one."
Shinji didn't move.
But his eyes sharpened slightly.
Kenta and Raik moved wide, drawing attention. Daiki pressed forward with controlled fire, forcing space again.
Aiko stayed back waiting.
Shinji moved through them like before.
But this time they didn't chase. They funneled.
Then the opening came.
Aiko moved. Her hand snapped forward and grabbed a bell.
Shinji stopped..
Aiko stood there, breathing slightly heavier, the bell in her hand.
Kenta grinned wide. "No way."
Daiki exhaled slowly.
Shinji looked at them.
All three.
Then he reached up and removed the other two bells. He tossed them lightly. Daiki caught one. Kenta caught the other.
"You passed."
They froze. "What?"
Shinji's gaze remained steady.
"You understood the point."
Kenta blinked. "That's it?"
"For now."
Aiko looked at the bell in her hand.
Then at the others.
Then back at Shinji.
"It wasn't about winning."
"No," Shinji said.
"It was about how you chose to win."
Kenta laughed.
"Alright. I like this."
Later that day the atmosphere was completely different. Smoke rose from the grills. Voices filled the air.
The smell of food replaced the tension of training.
Shinji sat across from them at a BBQ spot in the village, relaxed in a way they hadn't seen before.
Kenta was already halfway through his meal.
"Alright sensei," he said between bites. "You're alright."
Aiko shook her head slightly, but there was a faint smile there.
Daiki sat straighter, but even he seemed more at ease.
"This is part of the training?" he asked.
Shinji shrugged slightly. "Part of the team."
Kenta grinned. "Best part so far."
Shinji let that sit.
"You did well today."
Aiko nodded slightly.
Daiki didn't respond but his posture shifted just a bit.
Kenta just smirked.
"Yeah, we did."
Back at the Uchiha compound
They sat in a circle. A board between them. Shogi pieces laid out neatly.
Kenta stared at it like it personally offended him.
"This is training?"
Shinji nodded.
"Yes."
Aiko leaned forward slightly, already interested.
Daiki watched carefully. Shinji moved the first piece. "This game teaches positioning. Planning. Sacrifice."
His eyes flicked between them.
"The same things you need in battle."
Aiko nodded slowly.
"I see it."
Daiki leaned in slightly. "Every move affects the whole board."
Shinji nodded.
"Exactly."
Kenta groaned. "Man this is boring."
Aiko didn't even look at him. "You just don't understand it."
"I understand I'm losing already."
Shinji smirked.
"You are."
Kenta pointed at him. "See? That's what I'm saying."
Aiko smiled faintly as she studied the board.
"No," she said. "That's why it's useful."
Daiki nodded.
"You can't rely on instinct here."
Kenta leaned back. "Yeah, yeah. Thinking. Planning. I get it."
Shinji looked at him. "You don't."
Kenta blinked.
Then grinned.
"Alright. Teach me then."
Shinji reached forward, adjusting a piece.
"I will."
The game continued.
Aiko picked it up quickly.
Daiki understood its value.
Kenta struggled. Complained. But stayed.
And Shinji watched them.
