Chapter 72 - chp 71 Uchihas are displeased, whats new

Shinji stood at the edge of the courtyard, watching. Itachi Uchiha was already there training.

A set of shuriken rested in his hand, and when he moved he didn't rush. His throws came one after another, each slightly different from the last. Angles shifted. Timing varied. Rhythm broken just enough to make it unpredictable.

Shinji didn't interrupt. Didn't correct. He just watched.

Itachi reset his stance, exhaling slowly before moving again. This time, he adjusted mid-motion. The final shuriken struck from a blind angle.

A clean hit.

Itachi lowered his arm, breathing steady but heavier than before.

"You're watching."

Shinji stepped forward slightly. "Yeah."

Itachi turned to face him. "I understand a little more now."

Shinji's gaze sharpened just slightly. "About what?"

Itachi glanced toward the targets. "Not just getting stronger." "But how to fight."

"Good."

They stood there for a moment longer before Shinji turned. "That's enough for today."

"Understood."

The house was quiet when they returned.

Mikoto Uchiha was already inside, moving calmly through the room with Sasuke Uchiha in her arms.

The faint sound of Sasuke's small voice filled the space not crying this time, just restless.

Shinji paused near the entrance, watching them.

It was… normal.

Simple.

The kind of moment that didn't exist on a battlefield.

Mikoto glanced up, meeting his eyes.

"You've been out there since early."

Shinji shrugged slightly. "So has he."

Itachi stepped in behind him, quiet as always.

Mikoto smiled faintly, adjusting Sasuke in her arms.

"He reminds me of someone."

Shinji raised an eyebrow. "Yeah?"

Her gaze lingered on him for a moment longer than usual. "Your father."

"He used to say the clan needed someone who could see beyond it," she continued. "I think he was talking about you."

Shinji exhaled slowly, his gaze drifting slightly to the side. "He gave me more credit than I deserved."

Mikoto shook her head gently. "No," she said. "He just saw it early."

Later that day, the compound moved as it always did. Training. Conversation. But beneath it the same undercurrent remained.

Two Uchiha stood near one of the outer walkways, their voices low.

"He's changing things too quickly."

As the sun began to set, Shinji stood alone atop one of the higher rooftops.

The village stretched out before him. His gaze shifted upward slightly. The stone faces of the Hokage loomed above everything. Shinji's eyes lingered there for a moment.

He thought about the war. About the border. About the people they lost.

Then about Itachi. About the questions he asked. The way he thought. The way he saw things.

His gaze sharpened slightly. If the next generation was going to change anything then they would need more than strength. They would need direction. Something better than what came before.

He turned away from the horizon.

The decision had already been made.

Two months passed. The Uchiha compound had changed. Shinji stood at the center of it. As clan head, he hadn't remained idle. The divide between the village and the Uchiha had always existed, sometimes subtle, sometimes sharp but always there.

After the Nine-Tails attack, that divide had deepened. Shinji saw it clearly. And he moved to change it. It started small. Joint patrols. Then expanded. Shared training rotations between Uchiha jonin and other clans. A rotation system that placed Uchiha directly into broader village operations

And most importantly transparency. Reports shared. Movements communicated. No more shadows between the clan and the village.

It wasn't perfect. But it worked. Some clan members liked it. Others didn't.

To them, Shinji was weakening the clan's independence. Blurring lines that should never be crossed. Turning Uchiha into just another piece of the village. They didn't challenge him directly. But the tension remained.

Outside the compound, the village had its own rhythm. The Chunin Exams had begun. Itachi Uchiha moved through them with the same calm precision he showed in training.

Now the tournament loomed. One week away.

Shinji didn't need reports to know how Itachi performed. He saw it.

But Shinji also knew The real test wasn't strength.

Elsewhere in the village movement never stopped. Shisui Uchiha had been gone more often than not. ANBU. The missions no one talked about.

When he returned, it was brief. Short conversations. Familiar smirks. Then gone again.

But even in that nothing between them had changed.

Shisui moved through the shadows of the village. Shinji stood at its center. Different roles. Same purpose.

The present.

The Hokage's office.

Minato Namikaze stood behind his desk, calm as always.

Shinji stood across from him.

"Two months," Minato said. "And you've already shifted the balance between the clan and the village."

Shinji didn't react. "It needed to be done."

Minato studied him for a moment.

"It did."

Then the door opened.

Shikaku Nara stepped in "Troublesome timing," he muttered.

Minato smiled slightly. "Perfect timing, actually."

Shikaku glanced at Shinji.

"You weren't kidding ."

Shinji raised an eyebrow slightly. "That's one way to put it."

Shikaku stepped forward, pulling a small set of files from within his vest.

"Your genin team."

Shinji reached out, taking the files without hesitation. "Anything I should know?" he asked.

Shikaku exhaled slowly. "Plenty."

He gestured slightly. "I selected them personally."

That alone meant something. Shikaku didn't waste effort.

"Each one balances the others," he continued. "Not just in skill but in personality."

Shinji opened the file. His eyes moved quickly.

Shikaku spoke as he did.

"First high potential. Strong instincts. But reckless. needs structure."

A page turned.

"Second technically sound. Smart. But lacks confidence under pressure."

"Third, unpredictable. Not the strongest. But adaptable."

Shinji's eyes narrowed slightly. "You built this team in contrast."

Shikaku smirked faintly. "Of course I did."

A pause.

"Teams that are too similar break the moment something goes wrong."

Shinji closed the file.

"And you think I can hold them together."

Shikaku shrugged slightly.

Silence settled for a moment.

Then Shikaku's tone shifted just slightly more serious. "They're not weapons," he said. "Don't treat them like they are."

Shinji met his gaze. "I won't."

Shikaku studied him for a second longer.

Then nodded.

"Good."

Minato stepped forward slightly. "Their future is in your hands now," he said.

Shinji glanced down at the files once more. Then back up. "Understood."

Another moment passed. Then Shikaku turned, already heading toward the door. "You meet them tomorrow," he said over his shoulder.

"…Try not to scare them off on the first day."

Shinji smirked. "No promises."

Shikaku chuckled quietly as he left. The room fell silent again.

Minato watched Shinji for a moment longer.

"You've done a lot in a short time," he said.

Shinji didn't respond immediately.

"This is different."

Minato nodded.

"It is."

"But I think you're ready."

Shinji looked at the files in his hand. Then back at Minato. "We'll see."

He turned and walked toward the door.
