Chapter 154 - North Haven's true form

The gate opened.

Markus stood on the other side. His black armor was polished. His sword hung at his hip. His face was stone. 

"Master. Are you certain this is wise?"

"when have I ever been wrong?"

Markus was quite.

"Mmh,"

Kaelen walked past him. His boots hit the cobblestones. The sound was flat. 

"I am certain I need to see."

Markus fell into step beside him. Two other guards followed. Black armor. Silent faces. Their hands rested on their swords. Their eyes scanned the streets, the doorways, the windows, the shadows.

The street was the same. Narrow. Buildings leaning inward. Thatched roofs with holes. The smell of waste and rot and unwashed bodies.

But different. The faces in the doorways watched him. Their hollow eyes had something else now. The hope he had kindled was still burning. Fragile, small. But it was there.
