Chapter 20 - Manipulation

The palace corridors felt different now that Ethan had made the decision to stop relying on instinct and incomplete recollection as his primary sources of understanding. The structure remained unchanged, but the way he moved through it had shifted into something far more deliberate and controlled.

He did not return immediately to the throne, choosing instead to redirect his path toward the administrative sections of Asgard where records, reports, and decisions were maintained beyond memory alone. Internally, however, his thoughts had already begun restructuring themselves into a system that prioritized verification over assumption.

"…If memory is unreliable, then written records become the baseline," he thought carefully, maintaining external composure as the palace responded to his movement. "…and if records disagree with memory, then memory loses automatically without debate."

The doors to the archive halls opened without resistance as he approached, revealing a vast chamber filled with layered records, runic inscriptions, and preserved histories that extended far beyond immediate relevance. The air within carried a different weight, quieter and more restrained, as if knowledge itself had been contained deliberately.

Ethan stepped inside without hesitation, though his awareness sharpened as he registered the scale of what he was entering. "…This is either exactly what I need or exactly what is going to make everything worse," he thought dryly, scanning the surrounding structures with controlled focus.

A scribe approached quickly, bowing with practiced precision before awaiting instruction without question or delay. The response was immediate and efficient, reinforcing the system's readiness to serve without requiring explanation.

"I require access to recent administrative records concerning internal logistics and cross-realm coordination," Ethan said calmly, his tone measured as he framed the request broadly rather than revealing specific intent. "Provide full documentation without summary or interpretation."

The scribe complied immediately, retrieving structured records that aligned with his request and presenting them without hesitation or commentary. The efficiency was absolute, which only reinforced Ethan's growing understanding of how smoothly this system operated under authority.

Ethan accepted the records without outward reaction, though internally his attention had already narrowed into precise analysis. "…Good," he thought, maintaining composure as he reviewed the material. "…this is information that does not depend on my memory, which means it is either accurate or deliberately falsified."

The first set of records aligned cleanly with current observations, detailing resource distributions and operational structures that matched what he had already confirmed earlier. The consistency was reassuring, but only to a point.

"…Baseline confirmed," he noted internally, tracking the alignment carefully. "…which means I now need to introduce a variable and observe how the system reacts to it."

He turned slightly toward the scribe without breaking the flow of his movement, maintaining the same calm authority that had become expected of him. "Record a directive," he said evenly, his tone carrying enough weight to prevent hesitation or misinterpretation.

"Adjust secondary distribution patterns by a minimal margin and mark the change under my authority, but delay actual implementation until further confirmation is issued," he continued, keeping the instruction precise but intentionally incomplete. "Ensure the record reflects completion despite the delay."

The scribe paused for only a fraction of a second before complying, the system accepting the directive without question or visible resistance. The order was recorded exactly as stated, its presence now embedded within the structure of Asgard's administrative history.

Ethan observed the process without outward reaction, though internally his thoughts had already begun tracking the implications. "…Now we wait," he thought carefully, maintaining composure as the first controlled test entered the system.

"If the memory changes to reflect this before it actually happens, then something is updating my perception directly," he continued internally, the logic forming with increasing clarity. "…and if it does not, then the problem is isolated to existing memory rather than active manipulation."

A presence entered the chamber quietly, not announced by sound but by the subtle shift in attention that followed it naturally. Ethan did not turn immediately, though recognition came without effort.

Loki had arrived again.

"You have abandoned the throne in favor of records," Loki said lightly, his tone smooth but carrying that familiar edge of curiosity. "I find that transition more interesting than anything that occurred on the battlefield."

Ethan continued reviewing the documents without interruption, allowing the silence to stretch as if the observation required no immediate response. Internally, however, his thoughts adjusted to the presence without losing focus on the test.

"…He appears whenever something important happens," he noted, maintaining composure as he tracked both conversation and experiment simultaneously. "…which means either he is very observant or very suspicious, and I am not sure which is worse."

"Information is more stable than perception," Ethan replied calmly, his voice measured as he acknowledged the comment without revealing intent. "Observation without verification leads to error, and error compounds when left unchecked."

Loki stepped closer, his gaze shifting briefly toward the records before returning to Ethan with quiet interest. The faint smile remained, though it now carried a sharper focus.

"And yet," Loki said smoothly, "you have relied on perception until now without visible concern, which suggests that something has changed recently."

Ethan did not respond immediately, allowing the implication to settle without confirmation or denial as he maintained the same controlled presence. Internally, however, the timing aligned with his expectations.

"…He is connecting patterns again," he noted, maintaining focus as the test remained active. "…but this time it does not matter, because I am not relying on memory anymore."

"Adaptation is required when conditions shift beyond acceptable limits," Ethan said evenly, his tone steady as he offered an explanation that remained deliberately broad. "Continuing previous methods under new variables is inefficient."

Loki studied him for a moment longer, then exhaled quietly as if accepting the answer without fully resolving his curiosity. The interest did not disappear, but it shifted into something more patient.

"How refreshing," Loki murmured, stepping back slightly as his attention lingered on the records for a final moment. "You are becoming more difficult to predict, which makes this far more entertaining."

Ethan did not turn as Loki left, maintaining focus on the documents as the presence faded from the chamber once again. The silence returned, though it no longer felt neutral.

As time passed slowly memories buried deep surfaced.

Ethan issuing the exact directive he had just recorded, standing in the throne room as the court accepted the change without hesitation. The sequence aligned perfectly, presenting itself as something that had already happened rather than something that was pending.

Ethan did not move.

Not outwardly.

But internally, the conclusion formed instantly with complete clarity.

"…That is not a past memory," he thought slowly, the realization settling into something far more dangerous than before. "…that is an update, and something is rewriting my understanding in real time."

The memory remained stable, fully integrated as if it had always existed within his recollection without contradiction. The certainty it carried did not weaken under scrutiny.

Ethan closed his eyes briefly, not out of exhaustion, but to isolate the thought completely before reopening them with controlled precision. Internally, however, his final conclusion carried no uncertainty.

"…Something is not just inside my head," he realized quietly, his awareness sharpening as the system around him continued functioning normally. "…something is actively editing it."
