Chapter 10 - Total Domination

The distortion ahead did not explode outward as expected, but instead condensed inward with unnatural precision, as if something within it was focusing rather than breaking apart. The air tightened around that single point, bending in a controlled manner that suggested deliberate intention rather than chaotic instability.

Ethan remained still at the front, posture steady and composed as the battlefield seemed to hold its breath around him in tense anticipation. Internally, however, his thoughts had already escalated beyond calm observation into something far more immediate and unhelpfully honest.

"…That is definitely not normal," he thought with quiet urgency, maintaining outward control despite the clear escalation unfolding ahead. "…and unfortunately, I am currently the person expected to walk toward it and somehow make it stop."

The ground beneath them shifted slightly as the distortion pulsed again, sending subtle ripples through the terrain that did not follow any natural or predictable pattern. The army behind him held formation without hesitation, their discipline unbroken even as the environment itself began to resist stability.

Thor stepped forward half a pace, his stance tightening as lightning flickered faintly across his form in restrained anticipation of conflict. "It has grown stronger," he said, voice low but steady, "this is no longer a minor instability, and something within it is reacting to our presence."

Ethan did not respond immediately, allowing the silence to settle as if he were assessing variables far beyond what was immediately visible. Internally, however, his thoughts had already identified the problem with alarming clarity and very little comfort.

"…It is not reacting to us," he corrected silently, focus sharpening as the pattern became clearer with each passing second. "…it is reacting to me, which is significantly worse and also extremely unfair considering I just arrived here recently."

The distortion pulsed again, but this time it shifted slightly, adjusting its position as if aligning specifically with his location rather than expanding randomly. The movement was subtle, controlled, and entirely wrong in a way that confirmed his suspicion without leaving any room for doubt.

"…Yeah, that is definitely personal," he thought dryly, tension tightening beneath his carefully maintained composure as the situation escalated further. "…and I would really prefer if cosmic anomalies stopped developing personal interest in me without prior consent."

Without warning, the distortion collapsed inward completely, the space snapping tight for a fraction of a second before releasing something into the open environment. The form that emerged was not fully solid, its edges unstable as if it existed slightly out of alignment with reality itself.

The entity stood within the distortion's center, its shape vaguely humanoid but constantly shifting in small, controlled inconsistencies that made it difficult to define clearly. It did not roar or attack immediately, but the silence around it carried a weight that suggested awareness rather than absence.

Ethan's thoughts slowed for a fraction of a second, not from panic alone but from something far more unsettling forming beneath the surface. "…That feels familiar in a way I do not appreciate," he thought carefully, the connection forming despite the lack of clear understanding.

The entity moved first, not with speed but with precise intent, as if testing the space between them rather than rushing directly into conflict. The ground beneath it did not fracture or react violently, which somehow made its presence far more unsettling than if it had displayed raw destructive force.

Thor did not hesitate as lightning surged forward, his attack precise and immediate as it cut through the space between them with controlled power. The impact connected cleanly, yet the result did not match expectation in any meaningful way.

The entity flickered slightly as the lightning dispersed, its form destabilizing for a fraction of a second before stabilizing again as if the attack had only partially aligned with its existence. It did not retaliate immediately, but something about its posture shifted in response.

"…Of course that did not work properly," Ethan thought flatly, maintaining external composure as the situation escalated further beyond conventional logic. "…why would the first attack in a battle ever be effective, that would be far too convenient for my current situation."

Thor pulled back instantly, his stance adjusting as his expression hardened with focused intent and rapid reassessment. "It is not fully present," he said quickly, "it exists across states, and our attacks are not aligning properly with it."

Ethan processed the statement rapidly, forcing structure into unfamiliar information while the battlefield continued to evolve in real time. "…So it is partially here, partially not here, and entirely my problem to solve under pressure," he translated internally with uncomfortable clarity.

The entity shifted again, this time moving toward him with controlled precision that ignored normal spatial limitations without appearing as conventional teleportation. The intent behind the movement was unmistakable and entirely focused.

Ethan did not step back, not because he lacked fear, but because something deeper within his body did not permit the reaction. Instead of retreating, the space around him began to respond in a controlled and deliberate manner.

The moment the entity entered a certain range, the air itself tightened around Ethan, pushing outward with invisible force that established a boundary without visible structure. The space seemed to recognize something within him that did not require conscious instruction.

"…That is new and slightly concerning," he thought carefully, awareness sharpening as the reaction stabilized instead of spiraling into chaos. "…but I am going to accept it for now because the alternative is immediate failure."

The entity slowed as it approached, not fully stopped but clearly resisted by the pressure that now defined the space around him. Its form flickered again, adjusting to a condition it had not anticipated while the distortion around it reacted unpredictably.

Ethan's thoughts aligned more clearly than before, not perfectly but with enough structure to support deliberate action rather than reactive guessing. "…It is reacting to me in the same way my shadow did earlier," he realized, the connection forming with unsettling clarity.

The pressure increased slightly, not violently but with controlled intent, as if something within him had recognized the pattern and chosen to respond accordingly. Faint runes flickered into existence within the air itself, barely visible yet undeniably present.

Thor stepped back to his side, his stance shifting from direct offense to coordinated awareness as he recognized the change in battlefield dynamics. "Father," he said sharply, "it is stabilizing around you, and the distortion is reacting to your presence directly."

Ethan did not respond immediately, because this time he understood something important enough to act upon without hesitation. "…Stop guessing and stop reacting," he told himself firmly, "…and let whatever this is actually work the way it is supposed to."

He raised his hand deliberately, not out of instinct or panic but with controlled intention that aligned with the pressure surrounding him. The response was immediate and precise, expanding outward in a structured wave that forced the surrounding space into stability.

The distortion around the entity reacted violently this time, its form destabilizing as if it had been forced into a state it could not maintain under imposed conditions. The battlefield itself seemed to align momentarily, holding everything in place.

Ethan's thoughts sharpened as the connection locked into place for the first time since his arrival, the power no longer feeling entirely foreign or unpredictable. It felt accessible in a way that was both reassuring and deeply concerning at the same time.

"…Right, so this is what happens when I actually know what I am doing for a few seconds," he thought dryly, maintaining external composure as the moment unfolded. "…I would very much like to extend this understanding beyond its current extremely limited duration."

The entity recoiled as its form broke apart under the pressure, unable to maintain cohesion as the distortion collapsed inward once again. The battlefield shifted back toward stability, though not completely restored to its original state.

Silence followed, not absolute but controlled, as the immediate threat receded enough to allow space for thought once again. Ethan lowered his hand slowly, posture unchanged as the weight of what had just occurred settled into his awareness.

"…That worked," he thought carefully, the realization both reassuring and deeply concerning as it took shape in his mind. "…which means I can do this, and that is either extremely good or extremely dangerous depending on how this develops further."
