Chapter 13 - Spreading Uncertainty

The stillness across the battlefield did not remain stable for long, as the faint distortions at the edges began shifting again with increasing frequency and precision. The change was subtle at first, but it carried a pattern that felt deliberate rather than residual.

Ethan remained at the front, posture composed and unmoving as if the developing instability had already been accounted for within his expectations. Internally, however, his thoughts had already escalated from cautious observation into something far more alert and significantly less confident.

"…That is not fading," he thought carefully, maintaining external calm as his awareness tracked the shifting distortions across the terrain. "…that is reorganizing, which is significantly worse because it implies intent rather than leftover damage."

The air tightened slightly as multiple points across the battlefield began to distort at once, though none of them expanded into full manifestations immediately. Instead, they pulsed in controlled intervals, as if responding to a signal that had not yet fully revealed itself.

The soldiers behind him held formation without hesitation, their earlier belief now reinforcing their discipline rather than disrupting it. They did not question the change, but instead adjusted subtly, trusting that the situation remained within his control.

Ethan registered that shift without turning, though the implication settled immediately within his thoughts. "…They are not reacting to the threat anymore," he realized slowly, "…they are reacting to me not reacting, which is somehow more responsibility than I wanted."

Thor stepped closer, his stance tightening as the distortions increased in number and consistency across the field. "The instability is no longer isolated," he said, voice steady but sharpened with urgency, "it is spreading, but not randomly."

Ethan allowed the silence to stretch again, maintaining the image of calculated control as he observed the developing pattern without visible concern. Internally, however, the situation had already been categorized as rapidly escalating beyond comfortable limits.

"…Not random means directed," he thought, focus sharpening as the pattern aligned more clearly with each pulse. "…and directed usually means something is actively involved, which means I am about to have a very bad day."

The distortions shifted again, but this time they did not remain separate, instead aligning subtly as if forming a larger structure across the battlefield. The air between them tightened, creating invisible connections that hinted at something far more coordinated beneath the surface.

Ethan's awareness sharpened further as the pattern completed itself, the connection forming not through sight alone, but through something deeper that he could not fully define. "…That is not just spreading," he realized, "…that is forming something, and I am almost certain I am not going to like what it becomes."

The ground trembled faintly as the distortions synchronized, their pulses aligning into a single rhythm that echoed across the terrain. The effect was not violent, but it carried a presence that made the battlefield feel smaller and far more contained.

Thor shifted into a more aggressive stance, lightning beginning to gather more visibly as he prepared for immediate engagement. "It is consolidating," he said sharply, "whatever is behind this is no longer testing us, it is preparing to emerge."

Ethan did not respond immediately, though the statement aligned perfectly with his own conclusion as the pattern became impossible to ignore. Internally, however, his thoughts had already moved beyond observation into reluctant acceptance.

"…Of course it is escalating," he thought dryly, maintaining composure despite the increasing pressure surrounding him. "…it would be extremely out of character for my problems to resolve themselves without becoming significantly worse first."

The distortions collapsed inward simultaneously, not violently but with absolute precision, as if responding to a command that had finally been issued. The space across the battlefield tightened, compressing into a single focal point that carried far more weight than before.

Ethan remained still as the pressure increased, though something within him responded again, not chaotically but with controlled awareness that aligned with the forming threat. The connection was immediate and unmistakable.

"…It is doing it again," he thought, focus sharpening as the presence within the distortion became clearer. "…and I am fairly certain this is not a coincidence anymore, which is deeply concerning for multiple reasons."

The air fractured slightly as the focal point stabilized, revealing a presence far more defined than the earlier manifestation yet still not fully anchored to reality. Its form held together longer this time, its structure more consistent and far less unstable.

Unlike before, it did not hesitate.

It looked at him.

Not in a vague or implied sense, but directly, with a clarity that removed any doubt about its awareness. The connection between them formed instantly, not through sight alone, but through something deeper and far more intrusive.

Ethan's thoughts stilled for a fraction of a second as the realization hit with full force, the earlier uncertainty replaced by something far more concrete. "…Yeah," he thought slowly, maintaining external composure despite the shift, "…this is definitely targeted, and I am officially involved whether I like it or not."

The entity moved.

Not toward the army.

Not toward Thor.

But toward him.

The intent was precise, focused, and completely uninterested in anything else on the battlefield. The surrounding distortions reacted to its movement, aligning behind it as if supporting its approach.

Thor stepped forward immediately, lightning surging as he prepared to intercept, but Ethan raised his hand slightly before the attack could be released. The motion was controlled, deliberate, and carried enough authority to halt the action without explanation.

Thor stopped.

Not from hesitation.

But from trust.

Ethan did not look at him, maintaining focus on the approaching entity as his thoughts aligned into something far more deliberate than before. "…Last time worked by accident," he thought carefully, "…this time needs to work on purpose, or I am going to have a very short reign."

The pressure around him began to rise again, but this time it did not surge unpredictably, instead forming into something structured and controlled. The space itself responded, stabilizing around him as if recognizing the need for alignment.

The entity slowed slightly as it entered that range, its form flickering again as if encountering resistance that did not exist a moment ago. Unlike before, however, it did not immediately destabilize.

It adapted.

Ethan's awareness sharpened further as the change registered instantly, the situation escalating beyond simple repetition of the previous encounter. "…That is new," he thought, tension tightening beneath his composure, "…and I do not like that it is learning, because that implies this is going to get significantly worse over time."

The pressure increased again, but this time it met resistance, not collapsing the entity immediately but forcing it into a partial alignment that it actively pushed against. The interaction was no longer one-sided.

It was a contest.

Ethan remained still, posture unchanged as the space around him stabilized further under his influence. Internally, however, his thoughts had already reached a conclusion he could not ignore.

"…This is not something I can bluff," he thought quietly, focus sharpening as the tension reached a critical point. "…and I am going to have to actually understand what I am doing very soon."

The battlefield held its breath once more as the entity pushed forward against the pressure, its form stabilizing further despite the resistance imposed upon it. The connection between them deepened, not weakening, but strengthening under conflict.

Ethan's final thought formed with quiet clarity as the situation reached its breaking point.

"…Yeah," he thought, gaze fixed ahead as the confrontation solidified into something far more serious. "…this is definitely getting worse."
