Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Signal That Shouldn’t Exist

The stars had always been silent.

At least, that's what Commander Elara Vance believed.

From the observation deck of the deep-space vessel Astraeus, she stared into the endless black, punctured by distant flickers of dying suns. Humanity had spent centuries searching the cosmos—probing, listening, hoping—but the universe had answered with nothing but static.

Until now.

"Commander… you need to see this."

The voice of Lieutenant Arin Malik cut through the stillness. He rarely sounded unsettled. Today, there was something else in his tone—something sharper.

Elara turned. "If this is another sensor glitch—"

"It's not."

That was enough.

She crossed the deck quickly, her boots echoing softly against the metallic floor. The control room hummed with low energy, screens flickering with data streams. Arin stood frozen at the central console, eyes locked on a waveform pulsing across the display.

It wasn't random.

It wasn't noise.

It was… structured.

"What am I looking at?" Elara asked, her voice quieter now.

Arin swallowed. "A signal. Repeating every seventeen seconds. Origin point… Sector Orion-9."

Elara frowned. "That region is uncharted. Dead space."

"I know," he said. "That's what makes this impossible."

The waveform shifted again—sharp peaks followed by smooth, deliberate curves. It wasn't just structured.

It was intentional.

Elara felt a chill creep up her spine.

"Run a linguistic pattern analysis," she ordered.

Already done."

"And?"

Arin hesitated.

"It's not a language," he said slowly. "It's coordinates."
