Chapter 5 - First Years

Megumi rose from his bed; his fist slammed against the blaring alarm clock on his nightstand. He pulled his closet door open and grabbed his uniform. The sleeves slid over his arms without friction. He buttoned it up to the turtleneck and approached the door. Today would be another day, being tossed around by that meathead Gojo and passed off as "training." That dumbass really got under his nerves most of the time. All that strength, and he chooses to goof off. His door opens as another does down the hall, or more, the door to the room right next to his. Itadori walked out wearing a customized uniform. For the most part, his uniform was the same as Megumi's, but while Megumi wore a turtleneck, Yuji wore a red hood. The two stopped to stare at each other. Yuji reached back and pulled the hood in front of him, then he glanced back at Megumi. "Why do I have this?" Megumi stared at the ridiculous addition and knew it could only be the work of Gojo. Again, that moron. It didn't seem to bother Yuji that much, so it was fine. Though not a lot seemed to bother Yuji. Speak of the devil. Gojo practically hovered down the hall at high speeds and almost crashed into Megumi. Megumi managed to dodge to the side, leaving Gojo to crash into the wall. He dusted himself off and turned to his students. "Looking nice, Yuji." He got no response. "Cold as usual. I like it. You and my little Megubug will get along just right." Yuji stared at the man blankly. "First order of business. We have to go pick up your new classmate. Isn't that exciting?

Bags swayed in the wind. At least 15 bags hung off one arm. Her hair swayed as she walked. Nobara Kugisaki, the newest first-year student of Jujutsu High, has finally arrived in Tokyo, Japan. Her first order of business was... a shopping spree. "Young lady. Your beauty is truly mesmerizing. I'm a photographer; would you be interested in modeling?" There was a man in the middle of the busy walkway, camera around his neck, hands rubbing together. He was talking to a young woman with long black hair and a stern-looking face. The woman had no want or interest in acknowledging this pervert. She walked away quickly. Nobara approached and jutted her thumb towards herself. "If you want a model. How about you try me?" The man backed away slowly. "N-no, I think I'll look for options elsewhere." He turned tail and ran. Nobara yelled after. "Coward! You couldn't handle all this anyway!" Gojo smiled from behind her; his hands were in his pockets. "This is your new classmate." She turned towards them and flipped her hair. "The name is Kugisaki Nobara. Remember it. Now hold this." She shoved her bags into Yuji's arms. "First order of business. I have a mission for you. A curse has been spotted in an abandoned building in Roppongi." Nobara's eyes lit up; she imagined a vacation, maybe some time to buy more beauty products. Megumi sighed. This was just like Gojo. He was throwing these newbies into the fire and expecting them not to get burnt.

The squad arrive at the building. It's rundown and has graffiti spray-painted across the front walls. "This mission is special." He pointed at Yuji and Nobara, a broad smile on his face. His voice was cheerful as he told the special twist. "You two will be going in alone. Isn't that great?" Nobara stared at him blankly. She felt indignant. How could he be so irresponsible as to send two first years without proper training into a curse-infested abandoned building? She spared at a glance at her teammate. At first glance, he seemed like a typical idiot. He was spacing out, though she could admit his looks weren't half bad. Not better than hers. But not bad either. He seemed so calm, too. She put her hands on her hips, tilted her chin up, and strode toward the building. "As if I need backup. I can do this on my own." Yuji looked back at her, then to his teacher. "What makes this place so special that curses flock here?" Nobara stopped on the steps; both the question and the fact that he had to ask it stumped her. With that question, he was insinuating he didn't know the origin of curses and couldn't sense the large amount of negative energy surrounding the place. Gojo fixed his blindfold. "I'm glad you asked, Yuji-kun." From seemingly nowhere, Gojo pulled out a whiteboard and a pointer. "Cursed energy comes from the negative emotions a person has and is harnessed into power. Curses are similar in that aspect. They are born of humans' negative emotions. The more powerful the emotions, the stronger the curse. This place seems to be near a cemetery; all those negative emotions for the dead must have made this place quite dangerous." From his pocket, he pulled out a wide-edged combat knife. "Take this, Yuji. It's called the Slaughter Demon. It's a cursed tool. Try channeling your cursed energy into it while fighting." Yuji took the weapon and unsheathed it. The blade was thick, with two holes beside each other in the body of the blade. There was fur on the guard, and it was surprisingly nice in his grip. "I'll make sure to use it." Nobara made her way into the building. She waited for Yuji by the entrance. "Listen here. We're splitting up. You're new to this, so if you need help, just call out. I'm going to go upstairs and search around. Got that?" She stepped back from him and climbed the stairs. She glared back at him. "I mean it. Don't disturb me unless it's an emergency." Yuji watched her off, then he began to search the lower level. Most of the rooms he searched were empty. Few items were scattered. It seemed like people really liked this place. Now it's filled with only negative emotions. Even if negative. He envies the place. At least it has emotion. At least more than him. And it's only an inanimate structure. The first floor had only small, pesky curses. He felt that adrenaline again. The same one he felt when he first activated his cursed energy, but the feeling was dull now. The first time he felt genuine emotion to the extent of a normal person, and he lost the ability to feel it the same way after only using it once.

A large curse burst through the wall beside Yuji. It was some kind of centipede with a humanoid upper body. It screeched, protruding its arms out. Yuji lifted his new knife above his head and brought it down swiftly. The knife cut cleanly through the bug, and it faded away in two halves. On the floor near his feet was a teddy bear. Unlike everything else on this floor, it seemed new, but scuffed. Like it had been dropped in a panic. The only place he hadn't gone was upstairs.

Nobara stood in front of a smiling curse. It had been hiding in mannequins, but her technique forced it into the open. "Fine. You win. Just leave him alone." She could've won. She knows it. She could've won if this idiot kid wasn't here. It reminds her of herself when she was younger. She remembers her friend. She was older than Nobara but was always nice to her. One day, she went to visit her, only to find she had moved. She wants to find that woman again. For now, though, there isn't much she can do. If only she could get a hit. Just one hit. As her hope for victory quickly diminished, the wall exploded inward. Yuji stepped through calmly and prepped his knife. He noticed the kid. The teddy bear in his hand must be that kid's. He tossed the bear to Nobara. "Hold onto that." He stepped forward and launched himself at the curse. It was so surprised it couldn't move before a knife twisted in its head. The curse exploded into purple blood. "You ok?" The question was aimed at the kid, but extended to Kugisaki as well. Both nodded in pure awe. He took the bear from Nobara and handed it to the kid before hoisting him up into his arms. "Let's get you out of here." Nobara stood rooted to the spot. What she just witnessed was too impossible to have just been proven possible. She didn't even notice she was being carried outside under Itadori's arm.
