Chapter 44 - ''When Hell Came Home''{44}

Chapter 44: When Hell Came Home

The portals tore open across the main hall of the Guardians of Destiny Headquarters like wounds in reality.

One after another, the survivors of the Domains of Sin stumbled through.

Peter Shotstock came first, still gripping the bloodstained blade that had pierced Satan's heart. Meteor Boy and Cryogenesis followed, frost and embers still clinging to their clothes. Blinkstrike supported a exhausted but standing Jayse. Rona and Ofentse arrived last, both pale and marked by Wrathfire burns. The moment their feet touched solid ground, the entire hall felt the shift.

They had returned.

For a few fragile seconds there was only the sound of heavy breathing and the low hum of the headquarters' defensive systems.

Then the floor cracked.

Black stone and molten iron erupted upward as Hell Guards poured into the hall — armored, faceless, and relentless. Behind them rose a towering figure in scorched plate, a massive burning blade resting on one shoulder.

The Hell Knight.

And beside him, wreathed in the stench of endless battlefields, stood Titurus — the Sin of War.

Cohen's voice cut through the chaos. "Defensive positions! Now!"

Damon and Tiago moved as one. Khaos Hyde's dual nature flared. Devonte already had his gun raised. Godfrey Garowney stepped forward with the calm of a trained inquisitor. Daniel Ywong's eyes flickered with rapid calculations. Huxley Vane's nostrils flared as he tracked every new scent of sulfur and blood.

Bane Mugabe and Loki Nyden stood side by side near the center. For once, neither wore a mask of perfection.

"Stay close," Bane said quietly.

Loki's form shifted into something sharper, ready. "I'm not going anywhere."

The Hell Guards charged.

The battle for the headquarters began in a storm of steel, fire, and power.

In the middle of the fighting, a cold voice echoed from nowhere and everywhere at once — Lucifer's voice, carried on the white moon's light.

"The Rings alone were never enough."

Every Guardian froze for a fraction of a second.

"I require the blood of the Sins themselves. Including the one who stands among you… Rona. The Sin of Seduction."

Rona's eyes widened. Ofentse immediately moved in front of him.

Titurus pointed his weapon directly at Rona. "The blood will be taken."

The Hell Knight raised its burning blade and advanced.

Peter Shotstock — still exhausted from stabbing Satan — saw the trajectory. He moved without hesitation.

The Hell Knight's blade came down in a killing arc aimed at Rona.

Peter intercepted it with his own body and the short blade he still carried. The impact was catastrophic. The burning sword punched through his side and out his back in a spray of blood and fire. Peter drove his own weapon upward into the Hell Knight's shoulder at the same moment, forcing the larger enemy back a step.

He collapsed to one knee, blood pouring freely, but he kept himself upright between the Knight and Rona.

"Not… him," Peter rasped.

The headquarters roared with renewed fury as the Guardians threw everything they had at the invaders. Bane and Loki fought as a unit for the first time without masks — raw, imperfect, and determined. Meteor Boy and Cryogenesis created overlapping zones of fire and absolute zero. Jayse's residual Cave Beast strength flared in short, brutal bursts. Everyone fought.

But Peter's blood continued to pool on the floor.

Willowbrook High School – Outside the Main Building

Wyatt stood alone near the edge of the tree line, trying to clear his head after everything that had happened with Jackson and R. Dodger. The white moon hung heavy above the campus.

Then he saw it.

An orange flare bloomed deep in the trees — too bright, too wrong, the color of molten iron and open gates. The air temperature spiked. The ground trembled.

Wyatt's eyes widened in pure horror.

He turned and sprinted toward the school, screaming at the top of his lungs.

"RUN! EVERYONE RUN! HELL IS COMING!"

Students poured out of classrooms in confusion. Teachers shouted. Lancelot and Ignis were already moving, water and fire ready. Kevin's white-blue energy flared instinctively. Bangu, still holding the Lucifer Jr. file, looked up sharply. Ivan Petrov went pale. Jackson's black mist stirred. Lupin and Ri Kwon Jae tensed. Vladimir Solokov froze mid-step in the library doorway. Zayelle, Blessing, and Zane stared in shock.

Then the trees exploded.

A massive rift of fire and black stone tore open across the school grounds. Hell spilled through like a flood. The front of the main building partially collapsed under the impact.

From the center of the destruction, a tall figure with dark wings stepped out, calm and deliberate.

Lucifer looked across the chaos until his gaze locked onto Kevin.

"I am seeking to battle the Rampager," he said, voice carrying effortlessly over the screaming and collapsing structure. "The rest of you are incidental."

Kevin stepped forward, white-blue light raging around him. "Then you found him."

Military Command – Temporary Forward Post (Several Kilometers Away)

Sergeant Dilles stood over a holographic map, jaw tight. Reports were coming in fragmented and impossible.

A female soldier to his left — sharp-eyed and steady — replayed the thermal feed. "Sir… that energy signature doesn't match any conventional weapon. Or any known anomaly on record."

Beside her, Private Pablo crossed himself once, then forced his voice to stay professional. "Local police are requesting emergency support. They're saying the school is under attack by… something that isn't human."

Sergeant Dilles stared at the growing orange bloom on the map that marked Willowbrook High.

"Get me air support and every rapid-response unit we have," he ordered. "And someone tell the higher-ups this is no longer a local incident."

Pablo swallowed. "Yes, sir."

The female soldier already had the channels open.

Guardians Headquarters – Main Hall

The fight against the Hell Guards, the Hell Knight, and Titurus raged on. Blood and power filled the air.

Peter Shotstock remained on one knee, one hand pressed uselessly against the massive wound in his side. Rona knelt beside him, trying to stop the bleeding even as the battle continued around them.

Peter looked up at the younger fighter and managed a bloody, tired half-smile.

"Told you… we deal with it together."

His eyes began to lose focus.

Across the hall, Bane and Loki fought harder, the weight of every perfect mask they had ever worn finally cracking under real stakes. The rest of the Guardians held the line with everything they had.

At the school, Lucifer and Kevin faced each other across broken concrete and fire while students fled and newly awakened powers began to stir in panic.

And far above both battlefields, the white moon hung lower still — no longer observing, but descending.

Hell had come home.

And it had only just begun to claim what it wanted.
