Chapter 1 - Ch 1 The Beginning

He told her he liked her. It was just a simple message on her phone screen, nothing extraordinary, nothing dramatic. But for Zoya, it didn't feel simple at all. It felt like something inside her had suddenly shifted, like a quiet moment had turned into something unforgettable.

Zoya stared at the message for a long time, her fingers hovering above the keyboard without moving. Her heart began to beat faster than usual, almost as if it was trying to tell her something she wasn't ready to hear. The words "I like you" kept repeating in her mind. She read them again and again, and each time they felt heavier, more real, more meaningful.

A soft breath escaped her lips as she leaned back slightly, still holding her phone tightly. Her thoughts started rushing in all at once, filling her mind with questions she couldn't answer. Why her? Since when? Did he really mean it? Or was this just a moment, something temporary?

She closed her eyes for a second, trying to calm herself, but it didn't help. If anything, it made her more aware of how fast her heart was beating. Because this wasn't just anyone. This was Armaan.

He was the same boy who used to sit in her class. The one who didn't talk much, but when he did, people listened. The one who always seemed calm, almost distant, yet somehow always aware of everything around him. Back then, they weren't close. Just classmates. Sometimes they exchanged a few words, sometimes just a glance. Nothing more. Or at least, that's what it seemed like.

After tenth grade, everything changed. They moved on to different schools, different cities, different lives. The familiar routine of seeing each other every day disappeared, replaced by new environments and new people. She thought that was it, that whatever little connection they had would simply fade away like most school memories do.

But life had other plans.

One random day, a simple message appeared. "Hey." That's how it started.

At first, it was nothing special. Just casual conversations, simple check-ins, small talks about studies and daily life. "How are you?" "How's your new school?" "Is everything going fine?" Normal questions, normal replies. Safe.

But slowly, those conversations began to change. The messages became longer. The replies came faster. The pauses between conversations disappeared. Late-night chats became a habit. Random jokes turned into shared laughter. Small details about their day turned into long conversations about everything and nothing at the same time.

Without even realizing it, Zoya started waiting for his messages. She noticed when he came online and when he didn't. She noticed everything. Sometimes she would open the chat just to see his last message again, smiling at something that didn't even seem that special before. Somewhere between those late-night talks and endless conversations, something inside her quietly changed.

She started feeling something she didn't fully understand, yet she didn't try to stop it either. It wasn't loud or obvious. It was soft, hidden, and slowly growing. The kind of feeling that makes a person important without even realizing when it started.

Zoya opened her eyes again and looked at the message still glowing on her screen. "I like you." Those three words now carried the weight of everything they had built over time. This wasn't sudden. This wasn't random. This was something that had been growing slowly and quietly.

But along with that feeling, there was also fear. A quiet, undeniable fear. Their worlds were different. Their families were different. Their beliefs, their traditions, their way of living, everything felt like it stood between them.

She had thought about it before, many times. She tried to ignore it, tried to convince herself that it didn't matter. But now, standing at this moment, it felt impossible to ignore. Was this right? Was this something that could last? Or was she stepping into something that would eventually hurt her?

Her fingers moved slightly as she started typing a reply. Then she stopped. Deleted everything. Started again. Stopped again. She didn't know what to say, not because she had nothing to say, but because she had too much to say.

Her heart and her mind were not on the same side. Her mind told her to think, to be careful, to not rush into something uncertain. But her heart was calm. Quiet. Certain.

It whispered something simple. Say yes.

A small, nervous smile appeared on her lips. Maybe she didn't know what the future held. Maybe she didn't know how things would turn out. But at that moment, she knew what she felt, and maybe that was enough.

Taking a deep breath, she finally typed her reply. Her fingers trembled slightly as she looked at the words. "I think I like you too."

For a moment, she just stared at it. Then, before she could overthink again, she pressed send.

The message was delivered. There was no going back now.

Her heart skipped a beat as she waited for his reply. Seconds felt longer than they should. She kept looking at the screen, as if her eyes could make his reply come faster. Then suddenly, his reply appeared.

"Really?"

She let out a soft laugh. There was something so simple and real about that reply. She shook her head slightly and typed again.

"Yes."

And just like that, something changed. Not loudly, not in a way the world could see, but deeply. Two people were now connected by something fragile yet powerful.

Zoya leaned back, holding her phone close to her chest, her heart finally calming down. A soft smile remained on her face, one that she didn't even try to hide.

She didn't know what would happen next. She didn't know how far this would go. She didn't know what challenges were waiting for them in the future.

But in that moment, she was happy.

And sometimes, that's all love needs in the beginning. A simple feeling. A quiet connection. A small yes that changes everything.

She closed her eyes gently, unaware that this very moment would one day become the reason she would try so hard to forget it. And somewhere deep inside her heart, she held onto that memory, not knowing it would one day become both her strength and her greatest pain.
