Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: The Girl Who Was Never There

The wind howled across the rooftop.

Cold.

Sharp.

Alive.

Aarav stood near the edge, breathing slowly.

The city lights flickered below like nothing had happened.

Like someone hadn't just fallen to their death.

"Target eliminated. Return immediately."

The voice in his ear was back to normal.

Calm.

Controlled.

Like none of this mattered.

Aarav didn't move.

"Did you hear me?" the voice repeated.

"…yeah," Aarav said quietly.

But his mind wasn't there.

It was stuck on one sentence.

"The same people who made you."

"What does that mean?" Aarav asked.

Silence.

Too long.

Aarav's jaw tightened.

"You're hiding something."

"Return to base," the voice said again.

Aarav smirked faintly.

"Yeah… figured."

He turned—

And froze.

She was there.

Standing at the far end of the rooftop.

The same girl.

Black dress.

Calm eyes.

Untouched by chaos.

As if she had been there the whole time.

Aarav's heartbeat slowed.

Not fear.

Something else.

Recognition.

"You…" he said.

She stepped forward slowly.

"You're alive," she replied.

Aarav raised an eyebrow.

"Disappointed?"

She shook her head.

"No."

A pause.

"Curious."

The wind moved her hair slightly.

But her expression didn't change.

Aarav crossed his arms.

"You disappeared."

"So did you," she replied.

Aarav smirked.

"Fair enough."

Silence fell between them.

But it wasn't empty.

It was heavy.

Full of unspoken questions.

"You knew," Aarav said finally.

A pause.

"You knew someone would try to kill me."

She looked at him.

Not denying it.

"Of course."

Aarav's eyes narrowed.

"Then why didn't you warn me?"

She stepped closer.

"Would it have changed anything?"

Aarav opened his mouth—

Then stopped.

No.

It wouldn't have.

"Exactly," she said softly.

Aarav exhaled slowly.

"Who are you?"

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she studied him.

Like she was trying to decide something.

Then—

"I'm like you."

Aarav's eyes sharpened.

"…a replacement?"

She nodded once.

"Yes."

A pause.

"Different tier."

Aarav frowned.

"Tier?"

"You're Tier-1," she said.

A pause.

"I'm Tier-3."

Aarav blinked.

"What does that mean?"

She looked out at the city.

"It means…"

"If you die, they lose money.""If I die… no one cares."

Aarav felt something twist inside him.

"That's messed up."

She shrugged slightly.

"That's the system."

Silence.

Then—

Aarav stepped closer.

"Why are you telling me this?"

She looked back at him.

And for the first time—

There was emotion in her eyes.

Not much.

But enough.

"Because you're different."

Aarav raised an eyebrow.

"Yeah? How?"

She held his gaze.

"You didn't hesitate."

Aarav frowned.

"What?"

"The jump," she said.

"The fight."

A pause.

"You adapted."

Aarav smirked slightly.

"Survival instinct."

She shook her head.

"No."

A step closer.

"Most people panic."

Another step.

"You calculated."

Now they were close.

Very close.

"You're dangerous," she said quietly.

Aarav's expression changed slightly.

"And you?" he asked.

A faint smile appeared.

"I already am."

The air between them tightened.

Not just danger.

Something else.

Something unspoken.

Then—

Aarav's earpiece crackled loudly.

"STEP AWAY FROM HER!"

The voice was no longer calm.

It was urgent.

Sharp.

Dangerous.

Aarav didn't move.

"Why?" he asked calmly.

"Because she's the hidden player!"

Silence.

Aarav's eyes locked onto hers.

She didn't deny it.

Didn't react.

Didn't even blink.

That was answer enough.

"…you're the target," Aarav said softly.

She nodded once.

"Yes."

A pause.

"And now you have a choice."

Aarav's heartbeat slowed again.

Choice.

Kill her?

Complete the mission?

Survive?

Or—

Something else.

"Do it," the voice in his ear commanded.

"Complete the mission."

Aarav clenched his fists.

This was it.

His first real decision.

Not forced.

Not guided.

His.

He looked at her.

Calm.

Waiting.

Not afraid.

"Why aren't you running?" Aarav asked.

She smiled faintly.

"Because I want to see what kind of player you are."

Silence.

The city lights flickered below.

The wind howled louder.

And Aarav realized—

This moment…

Would define everything.

He stepped closer.

The voice in his ear shouting—

"DON'T DO THIS!"

But Aarav ignored it.

He looked into her eyes.

And said—

"Let's change the game."

Silence.

Then—

For the first time—

She smiled.

Not cold.

Not dangerous.

Real.

"I was hoping you'd say that."
