Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Kill or Be Killed

The bunker fell silent.

Not peaceful silence.

The kind that comes right before something breaks.

Aarav stood still, the gun heavy in his hand.

His grip tightened unconsciously.

Outside—

Footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Coming closer.

"They found us," Aarav said quietly.

Zoya nodded.

"Of course they did."

No fear in her voice.

Only readiness.

Aarav exhaled slowly.

"This is my first real fight…"

Zoya glanced at him.

"And maybe your last."

Aarav smirked slightly.

"Motivating."

A faint smile appeared on her lips.

"Stay behind me at first," she said.

Aarav shook his head.

"No."

She frowned.

"You'll die."

Aarav looked at her.

"Then I learn faster."

Silence.

For a moment—

She just stared at him.

Then—

"Fine."

A pause.

"But don't slow me down."

Aarav smirked.

"No promises."

The footsteps stopped.

Right outside.

Aarav's heartbeat slowed.

Strangely calm now.

Because the fear…

Was turning into focus.

THUD.

The door shook.

"Last chance," a voice called from outside.

Cold.

Emotionless.

"Open the door."

Zoya didn't move.

"Or we come in."

Aarav raised his gun slightly.

"…guess they're coming in."

Zoya nodded.

"Positions."

They moved instantly.

Zoya took cover behind a metal table.

Aarav stood behind a pillar.

Gun raised.

Hands steady—

Not perfect.

But better.

THUD!

The door cracked.

THUD!

Again.

THUD!

Then—

CRASH!

The door exploded inward.

Three men rushed in.

Black gear.

Weapons ready.

No hesitation.

"Contact!"

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Gunfire filled the bunker.

Aarav flinched—

But didn't freeze.

That was the difference now.

Zoya fired back instantly.

Precise.

Controlled.

BANG!

One attacker dropped.

Clean shot.

Aarav's eyes widened.

"…damn."

"No time to admire," Zoya snapped.

Another attacker moved fast.

Flanking.

Coming straight toward Aarav.

Aarav's breath hitched.

This was it.

His first real moment.

The man raised his gun.

Aarav reacted—

Too slow.

BANG!

The bullet hit the pillar beside his head.

Concrete exploded.

Aarav ducked.

Heart racing.

"MOVE!" Zoya shouted.

Aarav rolled to the side.

Gun in hand.

The attacker followed.

Closing distance.

Fast.

Too fast.

Aarav's mind screamed—

"Think!"

He couldn't outshoot him.

Couldn't outfight him.

So—

He changed the game.

Aarav grabbed a metal chair nearby—

And threw it.

Not at the man—

At the light above him.

CRASH!

Darkness.

Instant.

The room plunged into shadow.

A moment of confusion.

That's all Aarav needed.

He moved.

Low.

Silent.

Unpredictable.

The attacker fired blindly.

Missed.

Aarav came from the side—

And slammed into him.

Hard.

The gun fell from the man's hand.

They struggled.

Strength vs desperation.

The attacker was stronger.

But Aarav—

Was learning.

Fast.

Aarav drove his elbow into the man's ribs.

THUD!

Then again—

THUD!

The man staggered.

Aarav didn't stop.

He grabbed the fallen gun—

And pointed it.

Right at the man's chest.

A pause.

One second.

Two.

This was the moment.

The line.

The point of no return.

Aarav's finger trembled slightly.

"I… I…"

The attacker smirked.

"Do it."

Aarav's eyes hardened.

And something inside him…

Shifted.

"I'm not dying today."

BANG!

Silence.

The man dropped.

Gone.

Aarav stood there.

Frozen.

Breathing heavy.

He looked down at the body.

His hands shook slightly.

"…I did it."

Not proud.

Not shocked.

Just…

Changed.

"Good," Zoya's voice came from the side.

Aarav turned.

The third attacker lay on the ground.

Unmoving.

Zoya stood over him.

Calm.

Untouched.

"Three down," she said.

Aarav swallowed.

"This is… insane."

Zoya looked at him.

"No."

A pause.

"This is who you are now."

Silence.

Aarav looked at his hands.

Then at the gun.

Then at the bodies.

And slowly—

He accepted it.

Not fully.

But enough.

The screen behind them flickered again.

Another alert.

SYSTEM UPDATE:SUBJECT: AARAV VERMASTATUS: ACTIVE THREAT

Aarav smirked faintly.

"Guess I got promoted."

Zoya smiled slightly.

"Yeah."

A pause.

"Welcome to the real game."

Aarav looked up.

Eyes sharper now.

Colder.

Stronger.

And for the first time—

He wasn't just surviving.

He was evolving.
