Chapter 187 - Chapter 187: Counterattack (EC)

"So, what exactly was it for?"

"Heh, heh, heh... I did not expect you to be so perceptive."

Volibear's laugh was unpleasant, carrying a faint note of mockery.

"In truth, if you can understand that I feed on battle and bloodlust, then you will understand."

Listening to him, Caleb thought back to how Sejuani had once described Volibear's appearance.

Swords and blades lodged in his back, half his face stripped down to bone, blood flowing from his mouth.

Even his four eyes grew beside his shoulders, revealing an ancient, indifferent bloodlust.

But the Volibear Caleb had seen before, and the Volibear he saw now, both had a much brighter white bear form.

"Could it be that the wars caused by leaving those Balestriders alive can increase your strength?"

After a little thought, Caleb understood.

Back then, Sejuani had nearly offered everything to Volibear, only to be stopped by Udyr.

Looking at it now, Udyr's intervention might even have been at the Bear Spirit's instruction.

Caleb had seen those Ursine. Their intelligence was far too low, and their blood was filled entirely with berserk lightning.

Those troops could bring bloodshed, but only in limited amounts.

Volibear must have realized that too, so he had simply allowed the Winter's Claw to cooperate with the Ursine instead of turning the entire Winter's Claw into Ursine.

The Winter's Claw had not disappointed him either. Years of raiding and warfare, along with the Balestriders roaming through Ursine territory, had finally allowed Volibear to return to the state he had been in right after stripping off his rune armor and unsealing all his power.

"So that's it..."

It was not only Caleb. The others, including Sejuani, quickly understood why Volibear had changed so quickly.

"So, the Void. What is that?"

Ashe, representing the still-confused crowd, asked a rather important question.

"Kai'Sa."

Caleb's voice remained calm as he looked at Kai'Sa and nodded.

The two of them had spoken about this beforehand, and Kai'Sa did not mind letting others see her Void skin.

"She is fortunate because she was able to take a layer of skin from a Void creature."

"She is also unfortunate because until not long ago, this was how she always looked."

Kai'Sa's Void skin pierced through her clothes. Savage spikes and the dim, eerie tissue on her back emerged.

This was Kai'Sa's means of protecting herself, and it was also the very thing that had forever denied her a normal life.

"The aura on it is something I have only smelled in the Freljord from a very long time ago."

Ornn was the first to frown. He remembered that era.

That was the age when the Freljord's "first river" was born.

Volibear had slain the molten serpent, and the blood that flowed from it formed the first river.

Back then, all domains had not yet been clearly divided.

Avarosa went to the Void in search of power, while Serylda went to the celestial realm.

In the end, those two lost their voices and hearing as well.

And it was also in that age that Lissandra, who pursued the wildest power, had her eyes clawed out by Volibear.

Now, after so much time had passed, the three demigods had gathered again, along with Aatrox, the Darkin.

Caleb intended to go to the Howling Abyss and take a look.

"In the Void, there are countless creatures like this."

"And what is even more terrifying are the Watchers now sleeping beneath the abyss."

"I'm not wrong, am I?"

Caleb turned his gaze toward Lissandra.

She sighed and silently nodded.

Since Caleb knew these details so clearly, the only choice now was to stabilize the situation first, then seek cooperation.

Lissandra did not trust the demigods, nor did she trust her sisters' descendants.

After all, she had betrayed them, and she had betrayed the yeti.

She could still guard this place alone.

However, if someone replaced her, the Freljord would be plunged into tremendous chaos.

Until Caleb appeared, bringing three demigods with him.

"I can enter other people's dreams. Whether they are Frost Priests or Spirit Walkers, their dreams are extremely easy to manipulate."

At this point, Lissandra simply chose to share the information openly.

Otherwise, with the power in Caleb's hands, replacing her would only be a matter of time.

The Darkin standing behind him alone would probably be enough to snuff out the fighting spirit of the Frostguard cavalry.

No matter how firm a soldier's will to fight was, it meant nothing when defeat came like a collapsing mountain.

When one enemy continuously slaughtered your comrades and used their corpses to replenish himself, would you run or not?

"In dreams, the Watchers appear as a black sun. All I can do is calm them as much as possible."

When she said this, Lissandra's voice could not help but fill with exhaustion.

Each time she woke from those dreams, her mind was nearly drained to nothing.

Yet in order to slow the melting of the True Ice, she could only continue soothing the restless sealed Watchers.

"How is the seal right now?"

That was the question Caleb cared about most.

If there was not much time left on the seal, then they had to urgently gather all of the Freljord's forces right now.

But if the seal still had some time left, then Caleb would go to Shurima and the Twin Cities to borrow every bit of strength he could win over.

"The ice is still melting slowly. Although my power grew stronger after the True Ice was polluted into dark ice, the ice surface melting completely is only a matter of time."

Caleb looked at the demigods, then turned and asked Aatrox.

"What does it take to seal the Void?"

"Then you would have to enter the Void itself."

"Back then, even the bodies of the Ascended could hardly withstand the erosion of time after entering it. They could only reconstruct themselves through blood magic."

"You mean he would be even stronger than he is now?"

"Far stronger."

Caleb silently nodded. The Darkin Blade in his current state could already cut down Pantheon, so it was truly hard to imagine how powerful Aatrox had been back then.

"Then we cannot wait until the ice completely thaws."

Caleb's words once again drew everyone's attention.

Even Ornn, who was usually content to take life easy and keep forging, found Caleb extremely interesting at this moment.

"We need to catch them off guard! We break the ice there ourselves!"

Caleb's idea was not without reason.

The Watchers sleeping within the True Ice would inevitably awaken gradually as the True Ice melted.

This was also why Lissandra had less and less time to hunt down the Iceborn descendants of her sisters.

"Then humanity will certainly return to the old ways again."

Volibear was rather excited. This war would not be a light one. Many mortals would surely go to battle.

Perhaps he could return to his peak state and bring the Freljord back to its savage age.

Caleb saw Volibear's delight, but said nothing.

A bear had to dream of endless fish, after all.

"Then what about the timing?"

Lissandra could not help asking.

Having enough strength to launch a surprise attack was a good thing, but how to command that strength was the real issue.

"Shouldn't that be decided by you, the person most familiar with the seal?"

Caleb could not help rolling his eyes.

At this moment, the people and demigods of the Freljord finally had a common enemy to resist.

Their alliance now could truly be called unified.

However, there were still a few small problems waiting for Caleb to solve.
