Chapter 29 - CHAPTER 29:A DINNER TO REMEMBER

The aroma of roasted chicken and fresh herbs filled the apartment as Zoey set the last plate on the table.

Candles flickered softly, casting warm light over the dining room. Tonight wasn't just any dinner—it was a celebration, though Zoey's nerves made her stomach twist in anticipation.

Ryan leaned against the kitchen counter, grinning as he watched her fuss over the table. "You're acting like you're about to host a state dinner," he teased, brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear.

"I just… want tonight to be perfect," Zoey admitted, adjusting the napkins one last time. "It's a big moment."

Ryan chuckled, stepping closer. "It's perfect because we're together. That's what matters."

Zoey took a deep breath, nodding. She glanced toward the clock. Any minute now, Ava, Maya, and Daniel would be here. They had been chosen to share this special news first—the friends who had stood by them through heartbreak, reunion, wedding planning, and everything in between.

The doorbell rang, and Zoey's heart skipped.

"That must be them!" she said, rushing to open it.

Ava came in first, her usual energy bouncing off the walls. "What's cooking? Smells amazing!"

Maya followed, serene and cheerful. "And it smells like love," she teased, hugging Zoey.

Daniel came last, carrying a bottle of wine. "Hope I'm not too late to toast the occasion," he said with a wink.

The group settled around the table, laughter filling the room as appetizers were passed and glasses clinked.

Conversation flowed easily, just like it always did when they were together. But Zoey felt the weight of the secret she was about to share pressing against her chest.

Ryan reached for her hand under the table, giving it a reassuring squeeze. "Whenever you're ready," he whispered.

Zoey smiled, her nerves easing slightly. "Actually… we have news," she began, trying to keep her voice steady. The group turned toward her expectantly. "Big news."

Daniel raised an eyebrow. "Do I need to be seated for this?"

Zoey laughed softly. "Maybe." She looked at Ryan, who nodded. Together, they took a deep breath.

"We're… expecting a baby," Zoey said, her smile widening as she finally let the words fly.

For a split second, the room went silent. Then Ava's eyes went wide. "Wait… what?!" she exclaimed, standing up so quickly she nearly knocked over her chair.

Maya's jaw dropped, her hands flying to her mouth. "Oh my gosh, Zoey! Ryan! That's amazing!"

Daniel's eyebrows shot up, then a slow grin spread across his face. "You're… seriously? That's incredible!"

Zoey laughed, tears prickling her eyes. "Yes, really. I took the test earlier today."

Ava rushed over to hug her, bouncing slightly with excitement. "This is the best news ever! I can't believe it!

We need a party, a celebration, everything!"

Maya smiled warmly, squeezing Zoey's hand. "I'm so happy for you both. Truly. You two deserve every bit of this happiness."

Daniel raised his glass. "To Zoey and Ryan, and their little one on the way. May they be healthy, happy, and spoiled by their amazing parents."

Everyone clinked glasses, the sound echoing in the cozy dining room. The atmosphere was electric, full of joy and anticipation.

After the initial excitement, everyone settled down again. Ava and Maya peppered them with questions:

How far along? How are you feeling? Do you have names in mind? Ryan and Zoey answered with shy smiles and laughter, feeling the love of their chosen family envelop them.

"Aria," Zoey said finally, a soft smile on her lips. "If it's a girl, we've decided to name her Aria." "If it's a boy, we've decided to name him Zuri."

Ava gasped. "That's beautiful! I love it!"

Daniel nodded, grinning. "Strong, elegant… just like his or her parents will teach her to be."

Ryan chuckled softly, brushing a hand across Zoey's. "And maybe a little stubborn too," he added with a wink.

The night continued with laughter, reminiscing about old memories, and gentle teasing. Ava made a toast to the trio's enduring friendship, while Maya shared stories from her own family that made everyone laugh until their sides hurt. Daniel joked about how he now had to compete for their attention, but everyone knew he was part of this little chosen family now too.

Eventually, the conversation drifted to quiet moments. Zoey and Ryan sat together on the couch, holding hands, feeling the small but powerful connection growing between them and the life they were about to bring into the world.

Ava perched nearby on the armrest, smiling knowingly. "You two are glowing. I swear, this baby is going to be loved beyond measure."

Zoey rested her head on Ryan's shoulder, letting herself relax into the moment. "I know. And we've never felt more ready."

Ryan kissed the top of her head softly. "Together," he whispered. "Always together."

The room was filled with warmth, love, and laughter—the perfect combination for this new chapter of their lives. Zoey looked around at the friends who had been their pillars, their anchors, and realized how lucky they were.

"This is going to be the best adventure yet," Zoey said softly, voice full of awe. "Our little baby is going to grow up surrounded by love—family and friends who've always been there for us."

Everyone cheered softly, clinking glasses once more. In that moment, Zoey knew the path ahead wouldn't always be easy—but it would always be full of love, laughter, and unwavering support.

And that was more than enough.
