(Ruby's POV)
The hot water feels good on my skin.
After everything that happened in the tunnel, after the fear and the running and the weight of Kai's threats, I just want to wash it all away. I stand under the spray and let the heat soak into my bones.
The bathroom is beautiful. All white marble and gold fixtures. A tub big enough for two. A shower with rain heads and steam jets. It's the kind of luxury I never imagined for myself.
But right now, I just want to feel clean.
I close my eyes and think about Mia. About her face on the video feed. About the machines beeping beside her bed. About the poison dripping into her veins.
We're coming for you, I told her. I promise.
The water gets hotter.
I open my eyes, reaching for the knob. I turn it down, but nothing changes. The temperature keeps climbing.
"Come on," I mutter, turning it further.
Still nothing.
