Chapter 55 - Conflict of Interest

[The Astral Tribunal - Cosmic High Court]

The Astral Tribunal did not have walls. It was a boundless expanse of swirling galaxies and freezing starlight. Suspended in the center of the cosmos was a massive, floating platform of pure white marble.

Sitting behind a towering bench of solid nebula were the Three Arbiters—colossal, faceless entities composed of condensed cosmic energy. They were the absolute judges of the multiverse.

Victor Thorne stood at the defense podium, his midnight-blue suit pristine against the backdrop of the cosmos. To his left, Seraphina stood silently, resting her hands on a towering stack of freshly printed elven parchment that was taller than she was. To his right, Elara trembled, terrified by the overwhelming presence of the deities.

Agent Vane, representing the prosecution for the Astral Revenue Service, floated in the center of the court.

"The defendant, Victor Thorne, is charged with the illegal monopolization of a mortal dimension," Vane's monotone voice vibrated through the stars. "We request immediate liquidation of his timeline."

The center Arbiter leaned forward, its voice echoing like a collapsing sun. "MORTAL. HOW DO YOU PLEAD TO THE THEFT OF COSMIC EQUILIBRIUM?"

Victor didn't flinch. He didn't bow. He pulled his gold pocket watch from his vest, checking the time.

"Before we enter a plea," Victor's voice cut through the cosmic booming, smooth and unapologetically arrogant. "The defense files an immediate Motion to Dismiss, citing a blatant and undeniable Conflict of Interest."

The stars around the Tribunal flickered in cosmic confusion. "EXPLAIN YOURSELF, TYCOON."

"Gladly," Victor tapped his gold-nibbed pen against the Tycoon's Ledger. "Under Universal Commerce Code, Section 12, a judge cannot preside over a case if they have a vested financial stake in the defendant's enterprise."

Victor turned to Elara. "Growth Partner. What is the primary currency of the deities?"

"F-Faith," Elara stammered, looking up at the towering Arbiters. "The Gods sustain themselves on the collective faith of the mortal realms."

"Exactly," Victor smiled a ruthless, predatory smile. He slashed his pen across the Ledger, projecting a massive holographic org chart into the galaxy. "And as established in Q2, the Pantheon Group successfully executed a hostile takeover of the Holy Church. I own the Vatican. I control the global supply of Faith."

Agent Vane froze, his gray aura stuttering.

"Because I own the primary distribution network for your lifeblood," Victor looked directly up at the massive Arbiters, his Tycoon's Aura suffocating the starlight. "I am technically your primary supplier. You are my clients. If you liquidate my timeline, your supply chain collapses, and you starve."

Victor gestured to Seraphina, who slammed a massive stack of legal precedents onto the marble podium.

"Therefore," Victor adjusted his cuffs. "You cannot objectively rule on this case without compromising your own fiduciary duties. I demand you recuse yourselves, or I am cutting off your Faith supply immediately."
