Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 — The Quiet Boy

Noise.

That was the first thing anyone would notice.

Laughter. Conversations. Chairs dragging across the floor. The usual chaos of a classroom trying—and failing—to settle down.

But in the corner, near the window…

There was silence.

Kai Dela Cruz sat with his head slightly tilted toward the glass, his eyes fixed on nothing in particular. Outside, the sky was overcast, gray clouds stretching endlessly like a dull painting.

His reflection stared back at him.

Still.

Unmoving.

Like he didn't belong in the same world as everything else.

"…You're doing it again."

Kai didn't turn.

He didn't need to.

"…Thinking too much," Reynard Contis added, dropping into the seat beside him like he owned the place.

Kai blinked once before shifting his gaze slightly.

"…Class hasn't started."

Reynard leaned back, stretching his arms behind his head. "Yeah, and? That doesn't mean you have to look like you're analyzing the meaning of life."

No response.

Typical.

Reynard grinned anyway.

"You know, people think you're scary."

Kai's eyes moved again, just slightly.

"…I don't do anything."

"That's exactly the problem," Reynard laughed. "You don't talk, you don't react, and you keep staring like you're about to assassinate someone."

Kai looked back out the window.

"…I'm not."

"Yeah, I know that," Reynard said. Then, more quietly, "But they don't."

A group of students passed by their classroom door, their voices loud and carefree.

Normal.

Everything felt… normal.

But something about it didn't sit right.

Kai couldn't explain it.

It was just a feeling.

Subtle.

Like something beneath the surface.

Watching.

Waiting.

"You ever get tired of it?"

Reynard's voice broke the silence again.

Kai didn't answer immediately.

"…Of what?"

"Being invisible."

That made him pause.

Not visibly.

But inside, something shifted.

Kai lowered his gaze slightly.

"…It's easier."

Reynard clicked his tongue. "Man, you really are something else."

Silence returned.

But it wasn't uncomfortable.

Not for them.

Minutes passed.

The classroom slowly filled.

Voices layered over each other.

Energy building.

Life moving forward.

Then—

Kai's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Reyn."

"Hmm?"

"…Do you feel that?"

Reynard frowned. "Feel what?"

Kai didn't answer right away.

Because he didn't understand it himself.

It wasn't a sound.

Not exactly.

Not something you could see either.

It was…

A pressure.

Faint.

But wrong.

Outside.

On the school grounds.

Something shimmered.

At first, no one noticed.

Why would they?

It looked like heat distortion.

Air bending slightly above the concrete.

But then—

The light intensified.

A faint glow.

Forming…

A circle.

"…Hey," someone near the window muttered. "What is that?"

More students started looking.

The teacher hadn't arrived yet.

Curiosity spread faster than concern.

People stood up.

Moved closer.

Phones came out.

Recording.

Laughing.

"Probably some kind of prank," someone said.

"Yeah, like a projection or something."

"Looks cool though—"

Kai didn't move.

His eyes were locked on it now.

Sharp.

Focused.

"…That's not normal," he said quietly.

Reynard followed his gaze.

"…Yeah," he admitted. "It's not."

The circle expanded.

Lines formed within it.

Complex.

Interlocking.

Glowing brighter with every second.

The air changed.

The noise in the room slowly died.

One by one, people stopped talking.

Stopped moving.

Because now—

They could feel it too.

A low hum.

Vibrating through the ground.

Through their bodies.

Through the air itself.

"…Okay," Reynard muttered, standing up. "That's definitely not a prank."

The glow intensified.

Blinding.

Unnatural.

And then—

It moved.

Something inside the circle shifted.

Like a shadow trying to break through light.

Kai stood up slowly.

Instinct.

Pure instinct.

"…Get back," he said.

No one listened.

A crack split the air.

Sharp.

Violent.

And from the center of the glowing circle—

Something crawled out.

Not human.

Not animal.

A creature.

Black, segmented, with too many legs.

Its body glistened under the light.

Its mandibles clicked—

Hungry.

For a second—

No one moved.

No one understood.

Then it lunged.

A scream tore through the classroom.

Blood splattered across the concrete outside.

Silence shattered.

"WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!"

"RUN!"

"HELP—!"

Panic exploded.

Students rushed away from the windows, some falling, others screaming, chaos consuming everything.

But Kai didn't move.

His eyes stayed on the creature.

Watching.

Analyzing.

More of them emerged.

One.

Two.

Five.

Ten.

A swarm.

Reynard grabbed his arm. "Kai—we need to move. Now."

Kai's gaze hardened.

Not fear.

Something else.

"…No," he said quietly.

Reynard blinked. "What?"

Kai stepped forward.

Slow.

Controlled.

"…If we run now," he said, his voice calm despite the chaos,

"…we won't make it."

Outside—

The creatures kept coming.

And for the first time—

Kai Dela Cruz felt it clearly.

Not fear.

But certainty.

Something had begun.

And there was no going back.
