Chapter 48 - CHAPTER 48: The Second Death

## CHAPTER 48: The Second Death

"Then..." Caspian paused, his voice dropping into a hollow, that seemed to send a chill down Lyra's spine. His expression was a void—a terrifying, glassy mask of indifference. She had seen him focused before, but this was different. This was the face of a man who viewed the nightmare before him as a threat.

"I'll just have to kill it again," Caspian said.

Lyra felt a chill race down her spine. His confidence was intoxicating, yet it carried a sharp edge of fear. If she were honest with herself, her hands were trembling. The revived Cerebral Stalker was no longer just a beast; it was a black-armored wraith pulse-coded with malevolent red energy. It radiated a pressure that felt like gravity itself had doubled.

Caspian didn't wait for a plan. He launched.

He became a streak of grey motion, his boots barely touching the dirt as he closed the distance in a heartbeat. He leaped high, his silhouette cutting against the canopy as he aimed his blade for the same ocular cluster he had punctured moments ago. But the monster was no longer a mindless insect. It sensed the incoming threat and jerked its head downward, burying its face toward the soil.

*CLANG!*

The sword struck the armored plates of the upper exoskeleton with the ringing sound of a hammer hitting an anvil. Sparks showered the air, and Caspian's arms vibrated with the shock of the impact.

"Hmmghhh!" He groaned, the force of the deflection nearly throwing him off balance. "Harder than before," he muttered, his eyes narrowing.

He flipped backward, landing in a low crouch as the Stalker hissed, the red veins on its body glowing brighter. Caspian didn't hesitate; he pivoted and charged again, shifting his center of gravity to slide low. He aimed for the soft, pale underbelly that was exposed between the chitinous plates.

The creature, however, was done risking its life. It reared up on its hind four legs and brought a razor-sharp, spiked limb down with the speed of a falling guillotine. Caspian's instincts screamed. He snapped his sword upward, catching the spike in a desperate block.

The weight was staggering. The monster's physical strength had tripled during the revival process. Caspian's boots sank into the loam, the earth groaning under the pressure as he held the massive spike above his head. His muscles burned, and the steel of his blade groaned.

"I'm being overpowered," Caspian thought, his teeth gritted so hard they felt like they might shatter.

"What do I do? If I don't move now, it'll crush me."

He closed his eyes for a microsecond. "Maybe... just this once. It will be quick. No one will see."

He took a deep, rattling breath, the mana in his core beginning to swirl into a forbidden pattern. "**Crest Lock: Rel—**"

His words were cut short by a roar of heat.

A massive pillar of orange flame erupted directly beneath the Cerebral Stalker, the soil turning into a molten slurry.

"A delay?" Caspian gasped, his eyes snapping open.

The monster shrieked, stepping backward as the fire licked its underbelly. Caspian turned his head to see Lyra Valerius on one knee, both palms pressed firmly into the ground. Her face was drenched in sweat, but her eyes burned with the fire of the Valerius bloodline.

"**Level 5 Sorcery Spell: DELAY!**" she screamed.

"**BLAZING DECEIT!**"

The spell hadn't been a direct attack; it was a proximity trap she had woven into the earth while Caspian was distracting the beast.

"Now, Casel!" Lyra yelled.

Casel didn't need a second invitation. He stepped forward, his massive frame casting a long shadow. He pulled his fist back, his knuckles glowing with an earthy, brown aura, and slammed it into the ground with the force of a falling star.

"**FANGS OF THE EARTH!**"

The ground rumbled with a tectonic groan. Jagged, spear-like pillars of rock tore through the surface, striking the Stalker from below and driving it further into the air, disrupting its balance.

"**TURBINE!**"

Elisa's soft voice carried through the chaos. She stood behind a granite boulder nearly as large as herself, her hands spinning in a circular motion. A localized tornado of compressed air gathered in her palms, which she thrust forward. The gale-force wind caught the boulder, propelling it like a shot from a cannon.

The rock slammed into the monster's face, shattering into a thousand shards upon impact. The Stalker staggered, its multiple eyes spinning in confusion.

Caspian didn't waste the opening. He saw the path his friends had cleared for him—a symphony of fire, earth, and wind. He surged forward, his blade held low and steady. As he reached the staggering beast, he didn't go for the head. He drove his sword deep into the unarmored gap in its underbelly.

The Cerebral Stalker let out a high-pitched, piercing screech—a sound so foul and discordant that Alium and his teammates covered their ears, collapsing in agony.

Caspian alone was unmoved. He didn't stop at a stab. He gripped the hilt with both hands and dragged the blade through the monster's length, splitting its midsection open. A fountain of dark, steaming blood erupted, drenching the forest floor.

The monster hit the ground. This time, the red glow in its veins flickered and died. Its legs gave one final, weak twitch before it lay still—a hollowed-out shell of obsidian and gore.

---

"We did it!" Casel yelled, punching the air as the silence of the forest returned. "It's dead! For real this time!"

"That was... beyond weird," Lyra said, wiping soot from her forehead. "How does a creature just come back like that?"

"It was scary," Elisa added, her chest heaving as she leaned against a tree for support. Her mana was clearly flagging.

Caspian noticed Elisa's unsteady breathing and the way her legs trembled. The coldness in his eyes began to melt, replaced by his usual, grounded warmth. He sheathed his sword with a clean *click*.

"We have to get going," he said, his voice soft. He turned toward Alium, who was still standing in the dirt, looking like his entire worldview had been dismantled. "Mr. Alium, I hope you can take it from here. Your teammates are free."

Alium didn't answer. He just stared.

Caspian walked over to Elisa. "I think I should carry you the rest of the way," he said gently.

Elisa's face fell, her big eyes looking sad and small. "I know... I know I always slow you guys down," she whispered.

"A beautiful damsel such as yourself shouldn't say such things," Caspian said with a wink. Elisa's cheeks instantly flushed a brilliant red as their gazes met. "I just thought you might be tired. That wind spell was massive; it probably drained your reserves."

Elisa nodded slowly, her heart fluttering. Caspian turned around and knelt down, and she climbed onto his back, her arms wrapping shyly around his neck.

*COUGH! COUGH!*

A loud, exaggerated cough came from the side. Everyone turned to see Lyra Valerius standing with her arms folded over her chest, looking like a stubborn child.

"Funny," Lyra said, her lip curling. "Nobody asked *me* if I was tired."

Caspian chuckled. "Are you tired, Lyra?"

"No!" she snapped instantly, her pride flaring.

"Suit yourself..." Caspian started to turn away.

"Well... maybe a little!" Lyra blurted out, her face turning pink as she saw Caspian actually starting to walk.

"Casel," Caspian called out with a grin.

Before Casel could even agree, Lyra leaped onto his back with the grace of a mountain cat.

"Hey! Easy there!" Casel yelled, nearly toppling over.

"Onward!" Lyra commanded, pointing a finger toward the forest's exit like she was riding a warhorse.

---

As they moved through the final stretch of the Forbidden Sector, the tension of the day began to dissolve into weary camaraderie.

"Today was absolutely exhausting," Casel said, narrating their journey as if reading from an epic poem. "We faced a multiple-eyed worm, some weird blue-skull mantis thing, and that giant bee."

"Do you think we'll see any more monsters?" Lyra asked, looking over Caspian's shoulder.

"No," Caspian replied, checking the thinning canopy. "I think we're in the clear. We're almost out of the forest."

"What a shame," Lyra teased. "I would have loved to face another one of those giant bees. But I'll never get the chance because someone was too fast." She shifted her gaze to Caspian, a playful glint in her eyes.

"Well," Elisa whispered from Caspian's shoulder, "I'm just glad we can put all of it... *beeee-hind* us."

The group stopped dead in their tracks. They stared at Elisa, their eyes wide with shock. Elisa's face turned three shades of red. She buried her head into Caspian's shoulder, her voice muffled.

"I thought... I thought it would be funny," she squeaked.

"HAHAHAHAHAHA!"

The forest erupted with laughter. Casel was doubled over, nearly dropping Lyra, while Caspian laughed so hard his shoulders shook.

"Beee-hind! That's amazing, Elisa!" Lyra cheered, reaching over to pat her friend's arm.

"You did great," Caspian added, still chuckling. "That was a top-tier pun."

"It was certainly better than some of Casel's jokes," Lyra added, throwing a pointed look at the boy carrying her.

Casel wiped a tear of laughter from his eye. "Hey! You could have just said my name instead of staring at me with those crimson devilish eyes!"

The four of them walked away, thier laughter ringing through the trees, leaving Alium behind to figure out his own path. They were tired, battered, and covered in monster blood, but as the light of the exit appeared ahead, they looked less like a group of students and more like a family.
