Chapter 4 - 4. How can something evolve just by fighting?

It should have been an ordinary little bird, growing up safely under the care of its parents.

Until the day Pokémon poachers invaded their forest.

The Corviknight line is known for being exceptionally intelligent, even among bird Pokémon. But intelligence alone could not protect them from the cruelty and cunning of ruthless humans.

The adult Corviknights were lured away from the flock by the poachers' tricks, and many young Rookidee were captured in the chaos that followed.

This particular Rookidee was naturally slower than the rest of its kin. It could not outpace the poachers, and it was caught.

What followed was a nightmare — a cramped cage, gnawing hunger, and a long, exhausting journey through unfamiliar land.

It was eventually brought to a hidden base deep within a forest. But the Rookidee was no ordinary bird. Using its sharp mind and the tough, steel-like feathers it had inherited, it pried open its cage and escaped into the trees, reclaiming the freedom that had been stolen from it.

To protect that hard-won freedom, it had to be careful. It coated its feathers in mud to dull their shine, blended in with the common birds of the area, and played the part of a clumsy, slow creature that could barely fly straight. No one could know what it truly was.

It told itself it would never forgive humans. It wanted nothing more to do with any of them, ever again.

And yet — upon hearing that one trainer's boastful words, something stirred inside it. Reason lost to instinct. Before it even understood what it was doing, it had already acted.

By the time its thoughts caught up, the flock of Pidgey it often traveled with had scattered into the sky. The Rookidee sat alone in a bush across from the trainer, its small eyes steady and serious, as though it had already made a decision it couldn't take back.

The trainer, it seemed, had completely misread the situation. He actually thought the Rookidee was challenging him to a battle.

"All right then! I can feel that fighting spirit. Let's have a proper duel!"

He reached for a Poké Ball and threw it.

Out came a Nidorino.

The Rookidee stared at the large, spiky Pokémon standing before it and quietly reconsidered its choices. Flying away right now seemed like the smarter option.

But it didn't fly.

Instead, it spread its wings and used Tailwind.

What am I doing? it thought to itself.

Then it stopped thinking and focused on the battle ahead.

Maybe this was fine. Maybe this was exactly how its story was supposed to go.

Nova did not have Nidorino attack first.

With a level gap of nearly thirty between them, this was less of a battle and more of a test — a chance for Nova to observe the Rookidee fully, to understand how it fought and what it was capable of. Sending Nidorino in with a powerful move right away would have ended things too quickly. That wasn't what he wanted.

Anyone who has sparred against a much weaker opponent knows how tricky it can be to hold back properly.

The Rookidee opened with Tailwind, wrapping itself in a sharp gust that kicked up the leaves around it.

Nova watched carefully. This little bird was smart — no doubt about it. Its battle sense was strong. It understood its own strengths and weaknesses and tried to account for them before engaging.

Still, there was a flaw in its thinking.

The Rookidee knew it was slower than other bird Pokémon, so it used Tailwind to close that gap before fighting. The instinct was understandable. But Pokémon battles are not simply about fixing your weaknesses. A Pokémon that covers every weakness often ends up being good at nothing in particular.

The ones who win are usually the ones who push their strengths to the limit.

In a double or multi battle, opening with Tailwind makes sense — it lifts the whole team. But in a one-on-one fight, using Tailwind before attacking means giving up a turn. Sharpening its claws with Hone Claws at the start, for instance, would have raised both its Attack and accuracy and put it in a better position overall.

The Rookidee hadn't learned that yet. It knew what to do — it just didn't fully understand why yet.

The gust settled. The Rookidee took off.

It was clear the Nidorino had been told not to attack first. The Rookidee understood the gap between them was enormous. It could feel it. So without hesitation, it went straight for its strongest option.

Brave Bird!

The Rookidee's body blazed with a fierce blue-white light. It folded its wings and dove, hurtling downward like a comet with everything it had. Brave Bird — the most powerful physical Flying-type move it had inherited from its parents — carried tremendous force even from a Pokémon its size.

Nova, who had been watching for exactly this moment, gave Nidorino its first command.

"Counter it with Horn Drill!"

Brave Bird hits hard — hard enough that even a direct clash is difficult to win against it. But Horn Drill, with its piercing rotation, had more than enough force to meet it head-on. Under normal circumstances, Horn Drill's accuracy is only thirty percent, making it unreliable as a standard attack. On top of that, Nidorino's Hustle ability lowers the accuracy of its physical moves further, which is why Nova usually avoided using Horn Drill offensively.

But as a defensive counter? Accuracy didn't matter when the opponent was flying straight at you.

"You're coming right to me. Accuracy won't be a problem."

The diving Rookidee and the spinning horn collided with a sharp, thunderous crack — like a meteor slamming into a cliff face.

Dust and wind exploded outward in every direction.

The Rookidee was small and light. The shockwave flung it backward through the air. Nidorino, heavy and planted on all fours, held its ground — but the impact had cracked the earth beneath its feet, and it was furious.

Both Pokémon had taken damage from the clash. The Rookidee landed hard on the ground, visibly dazed, blinking slowly as it sat there in a heap.

Nidorino, meanwhile, had completely lost its patience. It was already charging forward. Nova grabbed hold of its large ears with both hands and pulled back with everything he had.

He wanted to catch this Rookidee — not hurt it. If Nidorino landed a Double Kick on the little thing right now, this would be over in the worst possible way.

The two of them wrestled for a good two seconds before Nidorino calmed down enough to stay put.

By then, the Rookidee had gotten back to its feet.

It flapped its wings with effort and pushed itself into the air. The recoil from Brave Bird had clearly taken a toll — its flight was unsteady, and every wingbeat looked like it cost something.

But then, as it rose higher into the sky, something unexpected happened.

A bright, warm light began to pour from its body.

"What — what kind of move is that? I've never seen anything like it!"

Nova hadn't seen it before, because it wasn't a move at all.

It was the glow of evolution.

Nidorino had been with Nova since it was a Nidoran♂, but this was the very first time Nova had ever watched a Pokémon of his evolve in the middle of a battle.

Rookidee evolves at level eighteen. This one had already been at level sixteen before the fight began. The experience it gained from landing Brave Bird on a Nidorino so many levels above it — and holding its own against Horn Drill — was enormous. Enough to push it past two levels in a single moment, right up to the threshold it needed.

The light grew brighter and brighter.

Nova watched, barely able to speak, as the small, mud-coated Rookidee stretched and changed — its shape shifting mid-air into the sharp, armored silhouette of a Corvisquire.

...Are you the main character? he thought. You actually evolved in the middle of a battle?
